Schiavo Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) musician, artist songwriter, and founder of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band, Nirvana, was dubbed, “the voice of a generation”; a moniker he wore like his faded cardigan sweater, but with more than some distain. Cobain’s journey to the top of the Billboard charts was much more Dickensian than many of the generations of fans may realize. During his all too short life, Cobain struggled with physical illness, poverty, undiagnosed depression, a broken family, and the crippling isolation and loneliness brought on by drug addiction. Cobain may have shunned the idea of fame and fortune but like many struggling young musicians (who would become his peers) coming up in the blue collar, working class suburbs of Aberdeen and Tacoma Washington State, being ii on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine wasn’t a nightmare image. Cobain, with his unkempt blond hair, polarizing blue eyes, and fragile appearance is a modern-punk-rock Jesus; a model example of the modern-day hero. -

But how do I keep a positive outlook on something that has consumed a fair chunk of my life, and continues to take up so much of my time? I believe my brain loves the intersection of art, craft, and technology. -

But on the band’s eponymous self-released debut, his pedestrian singing lacks the supple, atmospheric quality of his guitar and pedal steel, NI diluting the effect of the spectral music: Kim played nearly TAT everything on the record, and the songs have a gentle, hovering beauty, but on the whole they sound lifeless. Hopefully he’ll get a spark from the musicians joining him here: Steve Dorocke (pedal steel), Jason Toth (drums), John TE MARIE DOS ET Abbey (upright bass), Jeff Frehling (accordion, guitar), and Emmett Kelly YV Tim Joyce (banjo). Music Our totally awesome music subbies and contributors have been working hard over the semester break to bring you the latest and greatest in music. We’ve got the goss on Splendour, reviews and interviews. So read on tune- loving friends, read on... Sparkadia You have probably heard of Sparkadia. A couple of months ago their debut album Postcards was featured on Triple J. They also recently completed a run of national dates stopping off in Adelaide to play a show with Perth’s the Dirty Secrets at Jive. At the moment they are probably still overseas having just played Glastonbury and T in the Park not to mention several other high profile festivals. I asked Alex, vocalist/guitarist, and Dave, drummer, how they felt about their recent run of good fortune. “It’s pretty sweet”, Dave confides. Of course it wasn’t always like this. “It’s been a real long hard slog and the combination of ‘a lot of luck and a lot of hard work’,” Alex tells me. The guys then explain how they spent nineteen hours in a tour van with The Cops to get to a show in Sydney, having just played in Adelaide. Inevitably, I got onto the subject of Sparkadia’s early days. Alex and Dave were school mates who only bonded over a love of Metallica and ‘Maiden. I gasped in the realisation that I had finally discovered One of the groups defining moments occurred at Splendour in the some like minded heavy metal fans. We spent a little time discussing Grass in 2003. -

Te Oro O Te Ao the Resounding of the World
Te Oro o te Ao The Resounding of the World Rachel Mary Shearer 2018 An exegesis submitted to Auckland University of Technology in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Art and Design 1 2 ABSTRACT criteria of ihi—in this context, the intrinsic power of an event that draws a re- sponse from an audience, along with wehi—the reaction from an audience to this intrinsic power, and wana—the aura that occurs during a performance that encompasses both performer and audience, contribute to a series of sound events that aim at evocation or affect rather than interpretable narratives, stories or closed meanings. The final outcome of this research is realised as a sound installation, an exegesis and a 12” vinyl LP. Together these sound practices form a research-led practice document that demonstrates how and why listening to the earth matters, and pro- poses a multi-knowledge framework for understanding sound, space and environ- ment. Nō reira And so Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou katoa Greetings, greetings, greetings to us all Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou katoa Greetings, greetings, greetings to us all This practice-led PhD is a situated Pacific response to international critical dia- logues around materiality in the production and analysis of sonic arts. At the core of this project is the problem of what happens when questions asked in contexts of Pākehā knowledge frameworks are also asked within Māori knowledge frameworks. I trace personal genealogical links to Te Aitanga ā Māhaki, Rongowhakaata and Ngāti Kahungunu iwi.
