Attending the Games Convention 2007
Vol. 1, Issue 1/2007 Black and White: Attending the Games Convention 2007 Ralf Stockmann Since the sneaky death of the E3 Entertainment Expo, the “Games Convention (GC)” established itself as the international gaming industry’s leading fair. 185.000 visitors - amongst them 3.300 journalists and 503 exhibitors - populated the crowded halls in Leipzig, Germany. But when it comes to innovation and evolution, the GC 2007 falls short. Thus, my answer on “how is the GC this year?” is “Just like last year. Played Table Tennis. Played Crysis. Waited for Spore. Maybe the GC is not exactly like last years – it is whiter”. The GC 07 does not encourage my faith in the video game industry. Instead, it was simply another year of waiting for the big titles: Crysis [1] much awaited successor of the both critics and players acclaimed Far Cry [2], is still in manufacturing. The single player demo looked breathtakingly good and played smooth and intense. So did the multiplayer demo one year ago. One has to raise the question what kind of progress has been made to justify this lack of scheduling. The situation gets only worse concerning Spore [3], probably the most awaited game recently: there was no demo at all. The so called “Spore creature editor” with its unique, bizarre possibilities of creating complex live forms out of nothing was the unchallenged highlight of the GC 06. There was no editor available this year, literally there was nothing available, and when I asked the staff at Electronic Arts (EA), they barely recognized the title of their forthcoming flagship. -

DreamHack Masters to move online – $300,000 prize pool split across four regional competitions Confirmed Teams To Date Include Astralis, Ninjas in Pyjamas, ENCE, MIBR, 100 Thieves, TyLoo STOCKHOLM — DreamHack today announced that, due to the ongoing health and safety concerns in the world, and the interest of the safety and health of our players and staff, DreamHack Masters has been rescheduled and will move to an online format to fulfill our promise of bringing the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) community the world's best CS:GO action. DreamHack Masters Spring will be split into two time periods: May 19-30, with the group stage of the regional championships in Europe and North America running parallel, and the playoffs taking place June 8-14. The other two regional championships, Asia and Oceania, will also run simultaneously from June 2-7. The total prize pool of $300,000 will be split between the four regions as follow: $160,000 for Europe; $100,000 for North America; $20,000 for Asia; and $20,000 for Oceania. Each region will run qualifiers running between April 16-20. “We’re very excited to move to an online format for DreamHack Masters Spring,” said Michael Van Driel, Chief Product Officer at DreamHack. “While not being able to compete on LAN is unfortunate, we’ve developed a structure to support teams, players and fans around the world. We look forward to a great competition, showing that the world of esports goes on as we're quick to adapt and find solutions for this new reality. -
An Overview of Esports in Europe

Foreword 3 2. Key Facts About Europe 4 3. European Market Trends 6 4. Local Impact 10 5. Biggest Events 15 6. Using Consumer Insights 18 FOREWORD A NEW PHASE FOR ESPORTS COMMENCES Esports is entering a new phase toward becoming a mature ESPORTS ENTERING A CRUCIAL PHASE TOWARDS MATURITY market. The coming two years will be crucial in how fast it grows into a multi-billion-dollar business. The key determining factors are the success of local leagues and the franchising approach, the implementation of regulations, the arrival of new game formats and competition, the uptake of content rights sales, team profitability, and the impact of industry convergence involving traditional media, entertainment, telecom, and sports companies. Depending on how these factors play out in the coming year or two, esports’ growth could accelerate and reach $2.4 billion in 2020 in an optimistic scenario, almost $1 billion higher than the base scenario of $1.5 billion. Europe has been one of the most important regions in the development of the esports industry. Some of the first organizations that made esports popular, especially in the West, originate from Europe. Most notable is ESL, arguably the world’s largest esports organization, which has its roots in Germany. The company has helped build and shape esports from small community events to record-breaking events, including the Intel Extreme Masters in Katowice and ESL One in Cologne. -
Orcacon-2019-Program-Web.Pdf
WELCOME TO ORCACON 2019 Greetings, OrcaFriends! Wow, it’s already time for OrcaCon again; it seems like just last week we were here playing games and eating delicious food truck noms. We welcome back everyone who’s been with us from the beginning, and offer a joyous hello to all of you who are new to our wee convention. OrcaCon was founded by a group of friends with an idea of a modest friendly convention, focused on being a welcoming and safe space for folks of all ages to play games. We decided early on to focus on bringing diversity, inclusion, and accessibility to tabletop games, and highlighting many marginalized creators who feel left out of other tabletop spaces. For year four, we’re focusing on LGBTQIA+ creators, artists, designers, and more. Be sure to attend their panels and play their games during your weekend. We’re extremely excited to present an amazing guest list, and hope you’ll get a chance to play games with them or have a wee chat. They’ve submitted some great games and panels, so be sure to drop by and see that they’re doing. It’s great to support marginalized creators! We are extremely happy to be back here at the Bellevue Hilton. They’ve been so kind to allow us free parking and to bring in food trucks. They’ve been a delight to work with so be sure to say thanks when you interact with them! Speaking of new things for 2019, we’re also excited about some new Sponsors and groups. -
Esport: Defusing Governance
Esport: Defusing Governance Nicolai Bouet 55466 & Oskar Rørbye Rønn 43062 Master Thesis Pages: 103 Characters including spaces: 233,642 MSc International Business / Cand.merc.International Business Supervisor: Sven Junghagen Co-supervisor: Philippe Bochaton 15/05/2018 Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to explore how esport is governed and to investigate whether governance is an important factor in esports at the professional level. To do this, the methodology developed by Geeraert and co-authors (2014) and AGGIS are combined to create a checklist of governance indicators for esport. Focusing on the relationship between game publishers, event organisers, and esport organisations, a sample of thirteen esports and eleven event organisers are investigated and eight interviews are conducted to obtain industry knowledge directly. Main findings are that esport is governed either by the game publisher, event organiser, or a combination of both, and that currently governance have a limited impact on esport. The potential limitations of this thesis are the lack of diversity across interviewees and lack of game publisher willingness to participate. 2 of 121 Table of Contents ABSTRACT ...................................................................................................................................................... 2 ABBREVIATIONS .......................................................................................................................................... 5 INTRODUCTION .......................................................................................................................................... -
