  • The Politics of Post-War Consumer Culture
New Zealand Journal of History, 40, 2 (2006) The Politics of Post-War Consumer Culture THE 1940s ARE INTERESTING YEARS in the story of New Zealand’s consumer culture. The realities of working and spending, and the promulgation of ideals and moralities around consumer behaviour, were closely related to the political process. Labour had come to power in 1935 promising to alleviate the hardship of the depression years and improve the standard of living of all New Zealanders. World War II intervened, replacing the image of increasing prosperity with one of sacrifice. In the shadow of the war the economy grew strongly, but there remained a legacy of shortages at a time when many sought material advancement. Historical writing on consumer culture is burgeoning internationally, and starting to emerge in New Zealand. There is already some local discussion of consumption in the post-war period, particularly with respect to clothing, embodiment and housing.1 This is an important area for study because, as Peter Gibbons points out, the consumption of goods — along with the needs they express and the desires they engender — deeply affects individual lives and social relationships.2 A number of aspects of consumption lend themselves to historical analysis, including the economic, the symbolic, the moral and the political. By exploring the political aspects of consumption and their relationships to these other strands, we can see how intense contestation over the symbolic meaning of consumption and its relationship to production played a pivotal role in defining the differences between the Labour government and the National opposition in the 1940s.

  • Roots of Aussie Rock’ Show the Show Features the Leemen, Stage Props and Audio Visual in Venues with Facilities
Lonnie Lee’s ‘Roots of Aussie Rock’ Show The show features The Leemen, stage props and audio visual in venues with facilities. As one of Australia’s first Entertainment Superstars, Lonnie Lee is as credible as one can get when it comes to representing and portraying the facts about his era and those stars who were in it with him. In this show he tells a brief story about the very first major stars of the original Rock’n’Roll era, 1957 to 1962. These were his friends and peers, all of them sharing such a unique time in the formation of what has become a billion dollar music industry. He honours their achievements by singing their major hits and some of the songs they were well known for on television. Over the era many stars were born, however he has chosen the first major stars. JOHNNY O’KEEFE was well known as J.O’K and ‘The Wild One’. He started his recording career in 1958 becoming Australia’s first Rock’n’Roll star. Due to his many hits, live show and TV popularity, he is stilled referred to, ‘Australia’s First King of Rock’. He compeered Australia’s first Rock TV show, ABC’s ‘Six O’clock Rock and had his own shows, The Johnny O’Keefe Show, ‘Sing Sing Sing’ and ‘Where the Action is’. His style was loosely based on James Brown and other ‘soul’ singers of the 50’s. COL JOYE started his recording career not too long after J.O’K and was an instant success.

  • Chapter 4 Clubland 1962-1972
Chapter 4 Clubland 1962-1972 From 1957 into the early 1960s, Johnny O'Keefe, Col Joye, Johnny Devlin, Johnny Rebb, Alan Dale and Lonnie Lee had provided proudly masculine templates of local success. O'Keefe and Joye also revealed considerable entrepreneurial skills in establishing managerial empires based upon their live circuit, radio and television popularity. Upon establishing responsive local environments, both managed many of the second wave of performers. This chapter examines the growth in Sydney's licensed clubs, and their concurrent interest in rock and roll as a lucrative form of entertainment. As identified in the development of the hotel and club circuits, this required a refinement of the 'unruly' rock and roll aesthetic evident in the previous chapter. The belief in more 'melodic' recording arrangements, and performers' incorporation into older notions of club entertainment signified a break with the more hysterical constructions of the music in the 50s. However, an examination of the Sydney surf club circuit in the mid-60s reveals a brief resurrection of earlier rock and roll beliefs. The surf club battles between 'surfies' and 'rockers' present an interesting precedent to the mods-rockers clashes in Britain. Moreover, echoes of earlier town hall/ballroom battles are evidenced in concerns founded upon generational differences regarding civic duty, and teens' contributions in constructions of community. While rock and roll displayed an increasing professionalism by promoters and performers, portrayals of 'wild' youth persisted as powerful discursive devices of social control. An important context of 1960s leisure is provided in the transfer of State government from Labor to the Liberal Party in 1965.

  • Second Wave: Australian Rock and Pop 1964 –1969
“THE SIXTIES”: Australian rock & pop recordings, 1964-1969 Page 1 of 314 THE SECOND WAVE: AUSTRALIAN ROCK AND POP 1964 –1969 COLLECTION GUIDE INTRODUCTION This collection guide is intended to provide information regarding the various materials held by the National Screen and Sound Archive relating to rock and popular music in Australia during the period 1964 - 1969. It continues from where “The First Wave: Australian rock & pop recordings, 1955 to 1963” published by National Screen and Sound Archive - ScreenSound Australia, in 1998. The National Screen and Sound Archive not only seeks to collect and preserve but also has a responsibility to provide information on Australian sound and moving image production in order to facilitate public access and awareness of these materials. The material listed in this collection guide is comprehensive as it also includes material not held by ScreenSound Australia. Where a recording is currently held in the collection, this is indicated by an asterisk (*) against each title in the right-hand margin. It is often a challenge to define exactly which recordings are “rock” or “pop” material, this listing has tried to include the broadest possible range of recordings -- including some which are perhaps also considered 'middle-of-the-road'. In many cases, the same artist often made recordings, which are considered iconic performances in Australian rock or pop also made records, which were aimed at a more general audience. The main criteria for selecting recordings for listing in this discography is that they were aimed at the teenage market or were contemporary material interpreted in a popular style such as was then presented on radio, television or in live performance.

  • Understanding Popular Music, Second Edition
Understanding Popular Music Understanding Popular Music is an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the history and meaning of popular music. It begins with a critical assessment of the different ways in which popular music has been studied and examines the difficulties and debates which surround the analysis of popular culture and popular music. Drawing on the recent work of music scholars and the popular music press, Roy Shuker explores key subjects which shape our experience of music, including music production, the music industry, music policy, fans, audiences and subcultures, the musician as ‘star’, music journalism, and the reception and consumption of popular music. This fully revised and updated second edition includes: • case studies and lyrics of artists such as Shania Twain, S Club 7, The Spice Girls and Fat Boy Slim • the impact of technologies including on-line delivery and the debates over MP3 and Napster • the rise of DJ culture and the changing idea of the ‘musician’ • a critique of gender and sexual politics and the discrimination which exists in the music industry • moral panics over popular music, including the controversies surrounding artists such as Marilyn Manson and Eminem • a comprehensive discography, guide to further reading and directory of websites.
