Second Wave: Australian Rock and Pop 1964 –1969 “THE SIXTIES”: Australian rock & pop recordings, 1964-1969 Page 1 of 314 THE SECOND WAVE: AUSTRALIAN ROCK AND POP 1964 –1969 COLLECTION GUIDE INTRODUCTION This collection guide is intended to provide information regarding the various materials held by the National Screen and Sound Archive relating to rock and popular music in Australia during the period 1964 - 1969. It continues from where “The First Wave: Australian rock & pop recordings, 1955 to 1963” published by National Screen and Sound Archive - ScreenSound Australia, in 1998. The National Screen and Sound Archive not only seeks to collect and preserve but also has a responsibility to provide information on Australian sound and moving image production in order to facilitate public access and awareness of these materials. The material listed in this collection guide is comprehensive as it also includes material not held by ScreenSound Australia. Where a recording is currently held in the collection, this is indicated by an asterisk (*) against each title in the right-hand margin. It is often a challenge to define exactly which recordings are “rock” or “pop” material, this listing has tried to include the broadest possible range of recordings -- including some which are perhaps also considered 'middle-of-the-road'. In many cases, the same artist often made recordings, which are considered iconic performances in Australian rock or pop also made records, which were aimed at a more general audience. The main criteria for selecting recordings for listing in this discography is that they were aimed at the teenage market or were contemporary material interpreted in a popular style such as was then presented on radio, television or in live performance. Despite adopting a broad interpretation of “rock” and “pop” some genres of popular music have been excluded from this discography such as jazz, country, and folk performances. Compilation and re-issue albums have generally been included, but in some cases recordings by the more popular bands or artists included in this discography have been reissued repeatedly on countless releases in every format imaginable (including some not included here such as reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes). Where possible overseas releases of Australian recordings have been listed, as are some recordings made overseas by Australian performers. The selection of New Zealand bands and artists included has been restricted to those who had some identifiable Australian connection such as those, which toured Australia and/or recorded here and those who eventually settled in Australia. Ross Laird, a member of the Archive’s Collection Information Section, who has extensive experience in research of the history and production of the Australian record industry, compiled this guide. Other researchers have kindly supplied some important addition information and I would like to thank Michael De Looper, Nicholas Solly, and Ben Whitten in this regard. • The Politics of Post-War Consumer Culture
New Zealand Journal of History, 40, 2 (2006) The Politics of Post-War Consumer Culture THE 1940s ARE INTERESTING YEARS in the story of New Zealand’s consumer culture. The realities of working and spending, and the promulgation of ideals and moralities around consumer behaviour, were closely related to the political process. Labour had come to power in 1935 promising to alleviate the hardship of the depression years and improve the standard of living of all New Zealanders. World War II intervened, replacing the image of increasing prosperity with one of sacrifice. In the shadow of the war the economy grew strongly, but there remained a legacy of shortages at a time when many sought material advancement. Historical writing on consumer culture is burgeoning internationally, and starting to emerge in New Zealand. There is already some local discussion of consumption in the post-war period, particularly with respect to clothing, embodiment and housing.1 This is an important area for study because, as Peter Gibbons points out, the consumption of goods — along with the needs they express and the desires they engender — deeply affects individual lives and social relationships.2 A number of aspects of consumption lend themselves to historical analysis, including the economic, the symbolic, the moral and the political. By exploring the political aspects of consumption and their relationships to these other strands, we can see how intense contestation over the symbolic meaning of consumption and its relationship to production played a pivotal role in defining the differences between the Labour government and the National opposition in the 1940s.

  • PATTO – the JOHN HALSEY INTERVIEW
PATTO – the JOHN HALSEY INTERVIEW Patto, apart from being one of the finest (purely subjective, of course) bands this country ever produced, were not blessed with good fortune. Forever on the verge of making it really big, they broke up after six years of knocking on the door and finding no-one home. Subsequently, two of their number died while the other two were involved in a terrible car smash which left one with severe physical injuries and the other with severe mental problems. Drummer John Halsey is now the only Patto member who could possible give us an interview. Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall are both gone, while bassist Clive Griffiths apparently doesn't even recall being in a band! Despite bearing the scars of the accident (Halsey walks with a pronounced limp), John was only too pleased to submit to a Terrascopic grilling - an interview which took place in the wonderful Suffolk pub he runs with his wife Elaine. Bancroft and I spent a lovely afternoon and evening with the Halseys, B & B'd in the shadow of a 12th Century church cupboard and returned to London the next morning with one of the most enjoyable interviews either of us has ever done. John Halsey: I started playing drums because two mates who lived in my road in North Finchley (N. London), where I'm from, wanted to form a group. This was years and years ago, 1958, 1959. Want to see the photo? PT: Oh, look at that! 1959! Me, with a microphone inside me guitar that used to go out through me Mum's tape recorder, and if you put 'Record' and 'Play' on together, it'd act like an amplifier.

Solid Gold - Jeff Apter & Philip Morris, Metcalfe Theatre, State Library of NSW, 5th December 2015] [Dressed in a black shirt and dark jeans, grey-haired Philip Morris sits beside his interviewer Jess Apter, a bald man dressed casually] [JEFF APTER] Thank you. Before starting, I want to say I was really fortunate to be able to work with Philip on this book. [Jeff Apter holds up a coffee table book] [JEFF APTER] And it was one of the more interesting exercises, wasn't it? Because we were given a directive to come up with... Was it 200 photos? ..for this book. [PHILIP MORRIS] That's right. [JEFF APTER] And Philip's archive is so fantastic and so rich, that I think we got it down to, what, 600? [PHILIP MORRIS] Yeah. [Audience laughs] [JEFF APTER] Was it 600 to start with? It was something like that. And it's staggering, really. It's a really great document of Australian rock history at a really interesting turning point. So to get it down to this... It's begging for a second edition, by the way. There's so many great photos. So it was a real honour to be able to... to do that. It was a lot of fun. [PHILIP MORRIS] Yeah, it was. [JEFF APTER] We actually had built into our contract... Our agreement was an understanding that we would never work in a boring situation.
