An Amber Attractions Production The Golden days of Australian Bandstand A musical look at 60's Culture Australia’s longest running TV pop show ran for 15 years on channel nine and was beamed into, two million Australian loungeroom’s each week. Hosted by the mild mannered Brian Henderson, it featured regular Australian singers who became known as the "Bandstand Family". The show popularised the talents of Col Joye, Little Patti, Bryan Davies, Judy Stone, The Seekers, Johnny Farnham and The Bee Gees to name a few. As the program grew in popularity the audience was introduced to many overseas stars such as Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Tom Jones, Hermans Hermits, Chubby Checker plus many more. While other pop shows presented screaming fans and long-haired beat groups, Bandstand somehow seemed to ignore the extreme trends in music that happened in the mid and late 1960s. Although it showcased a range of pop performers, it shied away from the brash and the scruffy, becoming a more family orientated programme than a show strictly for teenagers. • The Politics of Post-War Consumer Culture
New Zealand Journal of History, 40, 2 (2006) The Politics of Post-War Consumer Culture THE 1940s ARE INTERESTING YEARS in the story of New Zealand’s consumer culture. The realities of working and spending, and the promulgation of ideals and moralities around consumer behaviour, were closely related to the political process. Labour had come to power in 1935 promising to alleviate the hardship of the depression years and improve the standard of living of all New Zealanders. World War II intervened, replacing the image of increasing prosperity with one of sacrifice. In the shadow of the war the economy grew strongly, but there remained a legacy of shortages at a time when many sought material advancement. Historical writing on consumer culture is burgeoning internationally, and starting to emerge in New Zealand. There is already some local discussion of consumption in the post-war period, particularly with respect to clothing, embodiment and housing.1 This is an important area for study because, as Peter Gibbons points out, the consumption of goods — along with the needs they express and the desires they engender — deeply affects individual lives and social relationships.2 A number of aspects of consumption lend themselves to historical analysis, including the economic, the symbolic, the moral and the political. By exploring the political aspects of consumption and their relationships to these other strands, we can see how intense contestation over the symbolic meaning of consumption and its relationship to production played a pivotal role in defining the differences between the Labour government and the National opposition in the 1940s.

  • A Period of Rapid Evolution in Bass Playing and Its Effect on Music Through the Lens of Memphis, TN
A period of rapid evolution in bass playing and its effect on music through the lens of Memphis, TN Ben Walsh 2011 Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies 1 Music, like all other art forms, has multiple influences. Social movements, personal adventures and technology have all affected art in meaningful ways. The understanding of these different influences is essential for the full enjoyment and appreciation of any work of art. As a musician, specifically a bassist, I am interested in understanding, as thoroughly as 1 http://rockabillyhall.com/SunRhythm1.html (date accessed 7 /15/11). possible, the different influences contributing to the development of the bass’ roles in popular music, and specifically the sound that the bass is producing relative to the other sounds in the ensemble. I am looking to identifying some of the key influences that determined the sound that the double and electric bass guitar relative to the ensembles they play in. I am choosing to focus largely on the 1950’s as this is the era of the popularization of the electric bass guitar. With this new instrument, the sound, feeling and groove of rhythm sections were dramatically changed. However, during my research it became apparent that this shift involving the electric bass and amplification began earlier than the 1950’s. My research had to reach back to the early 1930’s. The defining characteristics of musical styles from the 1950’s forward are very much shaped by the possibilities of the electric bass guitar. This statement is not taking away from the influence and musical necessity that is the double bass, but the sound of the electric bass guitar is a defining characteristic of music from the 1950s onward.

Headline Act Normie Rowe AM Melbourne-born Normie Rowe is one of the most recognised names in Australian music. He released a string of Australian pop hits that kept him at the top of the Australian charts and made him the most popular solo performer of the mid- 1960s. Rowe's double-sided hit "Que Sera Sera" / "Shakin' All Over" was one of the most successful Australian singles of the 1960s. Between 1965 and 1967 Rowe was Australia's most popular male star but his career was cut short when he was drafted for compulsory National Service when his name came up in first 1968 intake. In 1987, Normie landed the lead role of Jean Valjean in the musical ‘Les Miserables’, which he played to great acclaim in over 600 performances. He then appeared in leading roles in a string of musicals, including ‘Annie’, ‘Chess’, ‘Evita’, ‘Cyrano’, ‘Get Happy’ and ‘Oklahoma’. In 2002 he stole the show with his performances of ‘Que Sera, Sera’ and ‘Shakin' All Over’ on the hugely successful ‘Long Way To The Top’ concert series which played to 160,000 people across Australia and became a hit CD/DVD and national television broadcast. In 2005 Normie Rowe was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame. In that year he was also recognized by the Australian War Memorial as a National Hero, alongside the likes of Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith, Vivien Bullwinkle, Keith Miller, Chips Rafferty and 45 other heroes of Australia. Normie Rowe has become a leading advocate and spokesman for the Vietnam Veterans and in 1987 and 1992 he was instrumental as a member of the National Committees for the Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Parade and the Vietnam National Memorial Dedication.
