The lyrics invite nothing but scorn from intelligent people. All of the album's ten tracks aren't quite so bad, though. "Lonely" is an accurate scenario of the depressed state, and the music is eerily similar to John Lennon's own style. Indeed, many of the songs bear resemblance to the work of the elder Lennon, most notably 'On The Phone' and 'Space'. The latter is particularly nice, vi/ith Julian sounding so much like John, one could be excused for mixing the two up. 'Space' and 'Lonely' are the LP's two best cuts, the younger Lennon apparently adept at slow-moving songs. Julian is given credit for playing bass, keyboards and drums on the album, although these instuments are also played by by a crack group of studio musicians under the guidance of , who produced . So the question must be raised; how much did Julian Lennon really play on the album? It's a moot point however. The album was recorded at no less than five different locations, $ BUCK $ including the Muscle Shoals studios in Alabama. The trademark Muscle Shoals horns are out in full force, giving the tunes near-excessive brassiness. Micheal Becker, though, uses his sax wisely on A 'Lonely.' Although VALCOTTE (the name comes from a town in France where Lennon wrote most of the album's material) is not a strong first release, there is definite potential in Julian Lennon. It'd do McCartney a world of good. 11:30-2:00
