BIOGRAPHY

LORAND FENYVES was born in and graduated from the . Academy of Music. He was the concertmaster of the Israel Phil­ •• harmonic Orchestra (1938-1951) and l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (1957-65). During those years he also founded the Israel , which became the foremost chamber ensemble in that country (1938-1957). As a teacher, he was the co-founder of the Israel Academy of Music in 1938 and was appointed to the classe de virtuosite in the Conservatoire de Geneve (1957-1965). He became a professor at the University of Toronto, a position which he still holds. In addition, he is also a professor at the Uni­ versity of Western Ontario. He is frequently invited to hold master classes in violin solo and chamber music repertoire throughout North America and Europe. He has been associated with The Ban.ff Centre since 1973 and con­ tinues to teach chamber music and hold master classes in Ban.ff and in Mount Orford, Quebec. He also gives frequent master classes in the US., -... Japan, and Er;,gland. Fenyves began his studies at an early age with Felix Weingartner in ... ., Vienna. As a concert artist, he has appeared in Europe, North America, Japan, and Israel with orchestras and in recital. He has recorded for the Decca, London Records, Guild du Disque, Sayo, Musical Heritage, RCA, .. ... and CBC labels. He recorded the Bart6k Second Violin Sonata with Andras Schijjfor Decca in September of1993. Tonight's concert marks the culmination of Mr. Fenyves'five-day re­ sidency at the Shepherd School. This residency included a violin master class, a string quartet master class, and several chamber music coachings, including the three groups performing on tonight's program.
