COMPANY mMMj'^& 4^ S3 Summer St. Symphony in D minor (Unfinished), No. 9 . Anton, Bruckner (Bom at Ansfelden, in Upper Austria, September 4, 1825 ; died at Vienna, October 11, 1896.) Ferdinand Lowe,* the editor of Bruckner's Unfinished Symphony, writes in a prefatory note to the score that it was the original intention of the composer to end the work with a purely orchestral Finale. This remark is in answer, no doubt, to the sorry jest of von Biilow that Bruckner's Ninth Symphon)^ "must end with a choral finale." The composer was hurt by this display of malice, nor did he see why he should apologize to admirers of Beethoven—of whom he was chief —for choosing the tonality of D minor for the chief theme of the symphony. This tonality was his favorite. Bodily sufferings often obliged Bruckner to put aside his work, and death came before the Finale was shaped. Although sketches of this Finale are in existence, they are only faint indications of the composer's intentions. He is said to have remarked to friends that, if the three movements were performed after his death, his ' 'Te Deum"t might be added as a Finale. The manuscript of the Ninth Symphony is in the Court. Library at Vienna. We learn from it that the first movement was begun toward the end of April, 1891, and finished October 14, 1892. The Scherzo was completed on February 15, 1894, but the Trio was finished as early as February 27, 1893. The Adagio was completed October 31, 1894. The first performance was by the Vienna Academic Wagner Society and the Vienna Concert Society at Vienna, February 11, 1903. The conductor was Lowe, and as an act of piety Bruckner's "Te Deum" was performed as the Finale. The three movements were soon after- ward played in other German cities, as at Berlin by the Philharmonic, * Ferdinand Lowe, bom at Vienna, February 19, 1865, was taught at the Vienna Conservatory of Music by Bruckner and Dachs. He taught the pianoforte and also chorus singing at the Conservatory. In 1897-98 he was conductor of the Kaim Orchestra at Munich. In 1898 he was called to Vienna to assist at the Court Opera. He became in 1900 the conductor of the Gesellschafts concerts—he resigned this position in 1904—and conductor of the Concert Society Orchestra. He has edited several works of Bruckner, and he was a great friend of Hugo Wolf. t Bruckner's "Te Deum" was produced at Vienna in 1886. It was performed for the first time in the United States at St. Louis in December, 1891, on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Archbishop Kendrick. Joseph Otten conducted. It was performed at the Tenth Biennial Festival at Cincinnati, Theodore Thomas conductor. May 26, 1892. The first performance in Boston was by the Cecilia Society, Mr. Lang conductor, December 12, 1905. The Worcester County Musical Association, Mr. W. Alphonce KEYWORDS: Schumann, piano music, counterpoint, dissonance, rhythmic shift ABSTRACT: Work in progress about linearity in early romantic music. The essay discusses non-traditional dissonance treatment in some contrapuntal passages from Schumann’s Kreisleriana, opus 16, and his Grande Sonate F minor, opus 14, in particular some that involve a wedge-shaped linear motion or a rhythmic shift of one line relative to the harmonic progression. [1] The present paper is the first result of a planned project on linearity and other features of person- and period-style in early romantic music.(1) It is limited to Schumann's piano music from the eighteen-thirties and refers to score excerpts drawn exclusively from opus 14 and 16, the Grande Sonate in F minor and the Kreisleriana—the Finale of the former and the first two pieces of the latter. It deals with dissonance in foreground terms only and without reference to expressive connotations. Also, Eusebius, Florestan, E.T.A. Hoffmann, and Herr Kapellmeister Kreisler are kept gently off stage. [2] Schumann favours friction dissonances, especially the minor ninth and the major seventh, and he likes them raw: with little preparation and scant resolution. The sforzato clash of C and D in measures 131 and 261 of the Finale of the G minor Sonata, opus 22, offers a brilliant example, a peculiarly compressed dominant arrival just before the return of the main theme in G minor. The minor ninth often occurs exposed at the beginning of a phrase as in the second piece of the Davidsbuendler, opus 6: the opening chord is a V with an appoggiatura 6; as 6 goes to 5, the minor ninth enters together with the fundamental in, respectively, high and low peak registers.

His ideas on how to interpret the core Classical and early Romantic orchestral repertoire were declared the benchmark by subsequent generations of conductors, making him the originator of a conducting tradition by which those who came after him defined their art – starting with Wagner’s student Hans von Bülow and progressing from him to Arthur Nikisch, Felix Weingartner, Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler and beyond. This conference will bring together leading experts in the research field in question. A large body of published research exists regarding the physiology of breathing, the acoustics of singing, and solutions for specific vocal faults. There is similarly a growing body of research into the system of voice classification and repertoire assignment. This paper shall reexamine this research in light of baritenor voices. After establishing the general parameters of healthy vocal technique through appoggio, the various tenor, baritone, and bass Fächer will be studied to establish norms of vocal criteria such as range, timbre, tessitura, and registration for each Fach. The study of these Fächer includes examinations of the historical singers for whom the repertoire was created and how those roles are cast by opera companies in modern times. Blake Howe / Franz Schubert – Syllabus / 2 GENERAL INFORMATION COURSE DESCRIPTION This course surveys the life, works, and times of Franz Schubert (1797–1828), one of the most important composers of the nineteenth century. We begin by attempting to understand Schubert’s character and temperament, his life in a politically turbulent city, the social and cultural institutions that sponsored his musical career, and the circles of friends who supported and inspired his artistic vision. We turn to his compositions: the influence of predecessors and contemporaries (idols and rivals) on his early works, his revolutionary approach to poetry and song, the cultivation of expression and subjectivity in his instrumental works, and his audacious harmonic and formal practices. And we conclude with a consideration of Schubert’s legacy: the ever-changing nature of his posthumous reception, his impact on subsequent composers, and the ways in which modern composers have sought to retool, revise, and refinish his music. The macroform, or overall structure, of each movement wasdetermined by the initial statement, frequency of use, andorder of each main thematic elementidentified. Theme groupings were then classified underformal classical prototypes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (ternary,sonata-allegro, 5-part or 7-part rondo, theme and variations, and others), modified versionsof these forms (three-part design), or a variety of free sectionalforms. The chart and thematic illustrations are followed by a commentary discussing each movement aswell as the entire concerto. No correlation exists between styles andforms of the 33 concertos--the 26 composers usetraditional,individualistic,classical,and dissonant formsina combination of ways. Almost all works contain commonunifying thematic elements, and cyclicism (identical theme occurring in more than1 movement) is used to a great degree. None of the movements in sonata-allegroform contain double expositions, but 22 concertos have 3 movements, and21 have cadenzas, suggesting that the composers havelargely respected standards established in theClassical-Romantic period. Perhaps Haydn experienced the misfortune (an ironic one when one con- siders the frequency of premature deaths among his great contemporaries or near contemporaries) of living too long.Years before his death in 1809 he was considered so old that the French and English had already presumed him dead in 1805.2 Many wrote condolence letters and a Requiem Mass was planned in Paris. Haydn’s music was both familiar and venerated. Raphael Georg Kiesewetter (1773–1850), writing in Vienna in 1846, reflected the perspective of the beginning of the nineteenth century in his Geschichte der europaeisch-abendlaendischen oder unsrer heutigen Musik. Haydn had ‘ele- vated all of instrumental music to a never before anticipated level of perfec- tion’. Haydn had a ‘perfect knowledge of instrumental effects’ and with Mozart (for whom Haydn was the ‘example and ideal’) created a ‘new school which may be called the German or ...the “Viennese”school’.Theirs was the ‘golden age’ of music.
