Entertainment Venues Pack ENTERTAINMENT VENUES! To support the development of a number of suitably located live music venues of an appropriate scale for the area. Row Labels Live music is an important part of Soho’s heritage and enhances the ‘vibe’ of Soho’s night- I live in Soho time economy. Public concern has been expressed at the loss of venues and it is considered I visit Soho that there is room for growth. Live music should spill out onto the street more. Visit A public awareness campaign with Visit London or Mayor's office to 45 to 60 Work 10 designate Soho the music capital of the capital Again an open minded approach needs to be adopted. There needs to be a sense of working with the operators of the establishment to ensure that 'anti social behaviour' outside the premises is really managed - in return 45 to 60 Work 10 the local residents need to be welcoming in accepting late night and a diverse range of leisure related enterprises. Again the retention of pubs, clubs and Denmark Street would contribute to this aim. The rebuilding or replacement of something like the Astoria would be good, with larger and smaller spaces which could be used not only for music, but for the arts (exhibitions, performance arts) would be good. It would be preferable if more than one facility was created in 45 to 60 Visit 10 different parts of Soho so they could be managed and run by different people/groups. Again if creative spaces/workshops or light industry units were created as part of developments they could be adapted for a multitude of these uses. Appoint a Soho Nightlife committee, maybe with a Soho Night Mayor (could be the assistant of the new London Nightlife Mayor that has been 31 to 44 Work 10 appointed by Mr Khan) and local businesses, promoters and communities will have their say. As a musician, and given the history of the area, the paucity of live Live / 31 to 44 10 venues is saddening. Work As long as residents are aware of any nearby music venues before they move in - there should not be a problem. Venues need to be able to make 45 to 60 Work 10 noise up until a resonable time in the night to prosper. As mentioned before, zoning to include businesses that can afford to rent in that area and are relevant to the people like myself who often enjoy the 45 to 60 Visit 10 night life of Soho. That means resisting the pull of the highest bidder each time a new business location becomes available Ask those who work in the venues. Over 60 Visit 10 Bear in mind the experience of many venues elsewhere which have been closed because incoming residents deem the noise too. Great, or Over 60 Visit 10 allegedly do. If Soho doesn't positively adopt tnertainment, providing it remains at an appropriate scale then Soho will lose character Challenges?...Affordable venues. Affordable to promoters and public. Late night parking for musicians and that central London congestion Over 60 Visit 10 charge. If you`re bringing in a set of Drums or a Double Bass you don`t wanna be doing it on the tube! Consider protection for LGBT and arts focused venues as well as others, Work / 31 to 44 10 under some protection orders to maintain the history of Soho. Visit Council Tax / rates rebates for live music venues / breaks / flexible Work / 45 to 60 10 opening hours / street concerts Visit Dodgy' little dives were always the most appealing, but sadly the bland corporates with no soul are stamping these out and replacing them 45 to 60 Live 10 with??? Argh! Keep Denmark Street alive. encourage and support in pubs and bars, even restos .... mixed use like Over 60 Visit 10 the Spice of Life, the old Blue Posts, Pillars of Hercules, and more. Encourage use of basements for new venues, rather than parking. All Work / 18 to 30 10 development should be car free. Visit Entertainment venues should be well spaced within Soho and priced; 45 to 60 Visit 10 hence ground rents needs to relatively low. Entertainment venues, especially those for the LGBT+ community are vital for the area and need to be better encouraged to set up, or 18 to 30 Work 10 protected from development into generic chains/ housing. I am appalled by the loss of live music venues in London and the indie cinemas that used to be in the area. I think that everything possible should be done to revitalise live music in the area. The challenge would 45 to 60 Visit 10 be concerns about noise after concerts but again i would think Soho residents are fairly used to livelier evenings than residents of many other areas I think I have said this earlier. But this is a sine qua non. Without it, Soho dies and so does much of what Westminster has to offer to its residents, Over 60 Visit 10 offer to tourists and keep reinventing itself for an ever changing economy. I think noise control could be an issue for residents but if this is handled 45 to 60 Work 10 well then I would love to see more live music venues. If there is proper sound proofing and doormen to aid quiet dispersal, this Work / 31 to 44 10 ought to be achievable. Other cities such as Amsterdam manage. Visit Improve existing & create new public areas. Local residential property Over 60 Visit 10 owners may object. In 2005 I could stand Outside The Crobar and spit on The Astoria, L.A. 2, Sin, Metro's, The 12Bar, The Intrepid Fox and several other live music venues. Today, the only one left is The Borderline! This is a disgrace. 45 to 60 Work 10 Soho should abound in live music venues, as they are another reason why people come here. increased residential development could lead to requests for noise Over 60 Visit 10 restrictions i.e. licences for music venues It is a great shame that many of these have been under threat at all 18 to 30 Visit 10 Its about rents.... Over 60 Live 10 Keep Soho as it was and how it should be 45 to 60 Visit 10 Keep soho lively! More live venues and late night venues. 31 to 44 Work 10 Live music is wonderful and should be encouraged at both small and 31 to 44 Live 10 larger venues. cafes, bars, the works Live music venues are crucial to the survival of Soho as a thriving cultural 45 to 60 Visit 10 centre Make getting permission for live music easier and more affordable. Work / 45 to 60 10 There's a difference between a rock and roll concert and a little acoustic Visit guitar and singer. Make space available for different types of entertainment. Think out of the 45 to 60 Visit 10 box, use of churches for concerts etc Many iconic institutions that have historically been a place for performances are gone from the area, rendering it bland and soulless, 31 to 44 Visit 10 apart from an overabundance of restaurants. Performance venues, especially small ones, should be encouraged. Money rules. Apartments and Starbucks rule. Over 60 Visit 10 More basement venues with a genuine arts and creative themes. 45 to 60 Work 10 More entertainment venues bring more fun for residents and visitors alike but also can attract trouble makers. It's only a matter of having more 31 to 44 Work 10 security visibility to try and deter crime and trouble. More flexible licensing for appropriate venues. 31 to 44 Work 10 More live music, more clubs 31 to 44 Visit 10 more venues is what london needs in general. to have soho as a flag bearer and a musical hub again would be beneficial for locals and tourists 31 to 44 Work 10 alike Music certainly needs to be protected (Madam JoJo's?) and to a cerrtain extent the sex workers too. But, it is also a high density lived in area and 45 to 60 Visit 10 when I used to live in the West End, street noise caused mostly by drunks, was a huge pain Music has been the cultural backbone for soho for many years. Providing Over 60 Visit 10 local authorities do not price the venues out of existence 45 to 60 Work 10 New developments should include a clause to protect existing venues from people moving next to them and trying to then shut them down.

They are instantly recognisable, vastly influential and their artistry illuminates the jazz world”. Joey DeFrancesco is one such musician. Given that his grandfather was a member of the Dorsey Brothers band and his father was part of the Philadelphia jazz scene, it was not surprising that Joey should gravitate to jazz at an early age, taking up the organ when he was only six years old. Following a short period working with Miles Davis in 1988, he learnt to play trumpet as well. However, as his organ playing developed, it was credited with helping to revive the popularity of the instrument during the nineties. Making up the rest of the trio were Jason Brown (drums) and Dan Wilson (guitar), who were excellent, playing their roles in the standard organ trio format to perfection.

APPENDIX A Terms of reference and conduct of the inquiry Terms of reference 1. On 10 June 2009 the OFT sent the following reference to the CC: 1. In exercise of its duty under section 33(1) of the Enterprise Act 2002 (‘the Act’) to make a reference to the Competition Commission (‘the CC’) in relation to an anticipated merger the Office of Fair Trading (‘the OFT’) believes that it is or may be the case that— (a) arrangements are in progress or in contemplation which, if carried into effect, will result in the creation of a relevant merger situation in that: (i) enterprises carried on by or under the control of Ticketmaster Entertainment, Inc. will cease to be distinct from enterprises carried on by or under the control of Live Nation, Inc.; and (ii) the value of the turnover in the United Kingdom of the enterprise being taken over, as specified in section 23(1)(b) of the Act, exceeds £70 million; and (b) the creation of that situation may be expected to result in a substantial lessening of competition within any market or markets in the UK for goods or services, including the supply of live music ticket agency services. 2. Therefore, in exercise of its duty under section 33(1) of the Act, the OFT hereby refers to the CC, for investigation and report within a period ending on 24 November 2009, on the following questions in accordance with section 36(1) of the Act— (a) whether arrangements are in progress or in contemplation which, if carried into effect, will result in the creation of a relevant merger situation; and (b) if so, whether the creation of that situation may be expected to result in a substantial lessening of competition within any market or markets in the UK for goods or services.

  • The Aesthetics and Ethics of London Based Rap
The Aesthetics and Ethics of London Based Rap: A Sociology of UK Hip-Hop and Grime Richard Bramwell Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, in the Department of Sociology, London School of Economics and Political Science 1 Declaration I certify that the thesis I have presented for examination for the PhD degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science is solely my own work other than where I have clearly indicated that it is the work of others. The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. Quotation from it is permitted, provided that full acknowledgement is made. This thesis may not be reproduced without the prior written consent of the author. I warrant that this authorisation does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. 2 Abstract This thesis considers rap music produced in London. The project employs close textual analysis and ethnography to engage with the formal characteristics of rap and the social relations constructed through its production and use. The black cultural tradition has a considerable history and the thesis focuses upon its appropriation in contemporary London. The study begins with an examination of the process of becoming a rapper. I then consider the collaborative work that rap artists engage in and how these skills contribute to construction of the UK Hip-Hop and Grime scenes. Moving on from this focus on cultural producers, I then consider the practices of rap music’s users and the role of rap in mainstream metropolitan life. I use the public bus as a site through which to observe the ethical relations that are constituted through sharing and playing with rap music.
