Named after St Alexander to commemorate the coronation of the Russian Tsar Alexander I as King of Poland, it was renovated and enlarged several times over the course of the 19th century, only to be almost completely destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising. The church was seriously damaged but some Baroque altarpieces still remain. Nożyków (Nozyk Synagogue) "The City's Only Synagogue in Service" This synagogue was founded by Zelman and Ryfka Nozyk in 1893 and it is the only operating synagogue in Warsaw (it is almost the only synagogue in the whole of the city that survived World War II). Today, few of the original surrounding buildings survived. Inside, you will see the interior of by Yaffa Phillips a moderately wealthy synagogue from turn-of-the-century Warsaw, with the cabinet containing the Torah scrolls and the bema (equivalent of a pulpit) in the nave. It has the earliest example of a classical facade in Poland, although the interior is in the Baroque style. Built in the Gothic Revival style, the architecture of the church is impressive with red bricks and ascending columns on the top. Spectacular from its exteriors, the cathedral also houses other magnificent chapels which are just as remarkable. The marble-made by Jorge Láscar mausoleums and crypts downstairs hold the last resting places of some notable figures from history like the last ruling Polish Monarch King Stanislau August Poniatowski and Nobel Prize Laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz, to name a few.
