Yoshihihiro Tatsumi www.smartymagazine.com "A life in the margins": Yoshihihiro Tatsumi by Bubble #Manga Yoshihihiro Tatsumi is one of those great guardians of manga for several generations of authors, both for his intimate and realistic approach to Japanese society and for his graphic style. He is one of the founders of the author's manga and an instigator of the "Gekiga", a new form of fiction rooted in everyday life, in reaction to the then popular " Story Manga " and embodied in Tezuka's works. Her work marks a key moment for the manga industry and if it is now recognized, it has taken a little time to emerge in France. Already 2 volumes of an anthology of his works have been published (out of 5 planned: This city will kill you, Nothing will make you come into being) in a format that is intended to be as complete and focused on the author as possible. New graphics that address in conservative Japan in the 60s and 80s strong subjects such as love rid of romance, non-idealized family life or delicate themes such as abortion, illness, suicide, debasing work... Short stories that question morality through engaging and very lively characters. The whole is striking and powerful, one discovers or rediscovers the work of one of the greatest mangakas and his sharp eye on his time. The publisher proposes a comparison with Balzac and his construction of his Comédie humaine in the preface to the book that Tatsumi maliciously approved. Yoshihihiro Tatsumi drew his memoirs in A Life in the Margins. An autobiography on his mangaka journey, his early readings, his encounter with the creators of the time, the publishing world, the Gekiga revolution: all against the backdrop of a social chronicle on post-war Japan. Poverty, unemployment, social unrest,... the great themes that have made the success of the gekiga find their origins in the childhood of this character. After its defeat and its confiscation by the USA, Japan is in trouble and the most fragile social classes will pay a high price. It is in this harsh and austere climate that our manga enthusiast hero - a new medium dominated by the prodigy Osamu Tezuka, whose codes and reading habits are rapidly evolving - will guide his life around this practice. Like many of his peers, he trained at a very young age, copying the illustrators and mangas of the moment and placing himself as an assistant to accomplished draftsmen. The path of this author's alter ego will reveal his greatest achievement: drawing, drawing and drawing, with practice as the only school. His style and way of representing the world have forged a graphic school and influenced many contemporary artists. The dark tone contrasts with the luminous drawings, and the violence of the situations is served by a light staging. Through his boards and his cutting, he succeeds in taking us on this exploration without artifice of stories that often end badly. But it is above all his themes and his sense of direction that will make this young designer the master of a new genre. Rewarded in many countries for this testament work, this diptych has occupied the last ten years of Yoshihihiro Tatsumi's life. Disappeared in 2016, he bequeaths us a strong and endearing testimony to a life of work and creation that is always in touch with reality. Tatsumi's works tend to be universal and touch us with his personal approach. A poetic and artistic way of seeing the world that does not ignore the human condition and the issues of its time. DRAWN & QUARTERLY spring 2012 catalogue EXCERPT FROM GUY DELISLE’S JERUSALEM EXCERPT FROM GUY DELISLE’S JERUSALEM EXCERPT FROM GUY DELISLE’S JERUSALEM CANADIAN AUTHOR GUY DELISLE JERUSALEM Chronicles from the Holy City Acclaimed graphic memoirist Guy Delisle returns with his strongest work yet, a thoughtful and moving travelogue about life in Israel. Delisle and his family spent a year in East Jerusalem as part of his wife’s work with the non-governmental organiza- tion Doctors Without Borders. They were there for the short but brutal Gaza War, a three-week-long military strike that resulted in more than 1000 Palestinian deaths. In his interactions with the emergency medical team sent in by Doctors Without Borders, Delisle eloquently plumbs the depths of the conflict. Some of the most moving moments in Jerusalem are the in- teractions between Delisle and Palestinian art students as they explain the motivations for their work. Interspersed with these simply told, affecting stories of suffering, Delisle deftly and often drolly recounts the quotidian: crossing checkpoints, going ko- sher for Passover, and befriending other stay-at-home dads with NGO-employed wives. Jerusalem evinces Delisle’s renewed fascination with architec- ture and landscape as political and apolitical, with studies of highways, villages, and olive groves recurring alongside depictions of the newly erected West Bank Barrier and illegal Israeli settlements. His drawn line is both sensitive and fair, assuming nothing and drawing everything. Jerusalem showcases once more Delisle’s mastery of the travelogue. “[Delisle’s books are] some of the most effective and fully realized travel writing out there.” – NPR ALSO AVAILABLE: SHENZHEN 978-1-77046-079-9 • $14.95 USD/CDN BURMA CHRONICLES 978-1770460256 • $16.95 USD/CDN PYONGYANG 978-1897299210 • $14.95 USD/CDN GUY DELISLE spent a decade working in animation in Europe and Asia.

  • Reviving Classical Figures in Japanese Comics
Back To The Future: Classical Figures In Comics 287 Chapter 13 Back to the Future: Classical Figures in Comics Back to the Future: Reviving Classical Figures in Japanese Comics Carla Scilabra The aim of this chapter* is to investigate how Classical heritage1 is perceived and depicted in Japanese comic production. Manga series represent a particu- lar type of comic production which first appeared immediately after the Sec- ond World War and then grew – in a fairly progressive process – until it had reached almost every corner of the world.2 Nowadays, the manga phenome- non can be considered a central form of Japanese pop-culture expression, both in terms of the value system, themes, and worldview that it represents, and in the way in which it is widely diffused among different demographics. Simulta- neously, manga can also be seen as a global trend, thanks to the favor it has gained in different countries throughout the years.3 In order to analyze this process, this study will consider elements from the Greco-Roman historical and cultural heritage that appear in these comics and how they are represented, before focusing on a more intricate question that, although it might seem thorny, could lead to a more complete understanding * This article uses the Hepburn Romanization system for the transliteration of Japanese names and words. Japanese authors’ and characters’ names are indicated with the given name fol- lowed by the family name. 1 In this work the terms ‘Classic’ and ‘Classical heritage’ will refer exclusively to the ancient Greek and Roman cultural heritage, including under this definition both the myths and the history that concern these cultures.
