DECEMBER 4, 5, 6, 1952 OPPERMAN MUSIC HALL THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY I Victor Herbert's li vely contribution to the spring of 1913 was hi s . The first performance was given in the ACADEMY OF MUSIC in Ba ltimore where its success was prophetic of the praise it was to receive upon the occasion of its New York opening thot fall. Since that time it has been filmed with the team of Jeannette MacDonald and , has twice been returned to Broadway (o nce in 1929 at the Jolson Theate r and later in 1947 when it became a vehicle for the particular talents of Bobby Clark), and has long since become a regular bill of fare for both summer theater and light opera companies as well as for amateur groups throughout the country. SWEETHEARTS was the motivating factor behind Victor He rbert's organization of the com posers and librettists of America to protect the performing rights of their works. Copyright laws were vague and seldom enforced in this country. The result was that theate r and res taurant owne rs fe lt free to let their play whateve r music they chose, wi thout pay to the copyright owne rs. He rbert's patie nce is sa id to have reached its limit one night whe n he wa lked into a restaurant where an orchestra was me rril y pla ying the hit tunes from SWEETHEARTS, showing just around the corne r. The result was the proposal of an organiza ti on which has become kr)own a s the American Society of Compose rs, Authors, and Pub li she rs. The name of Victor He rbert brings nostalgic memories to many-and to others of a late r generation hi s undying me lodi es have come to be a favorite among the most popular of their time. Hi s popularity may well be due to hi s ability to write simple, appealing me lodi es of great beauty. Tonight's presentation of SWEETHEARTS is simply another tribute to the success of this man, who though born in Ire land, quickly adopted the United States a s hi s own country and whose music readily mirrors a deep and abiding love and understanding wh ich he he ld for Ame rica and all Americans.
