Vail in Colorado for the Orchestra’s 13th- annual summer residency there, featuring six concerts July 24–31, 2015, as well as a chamber music concert performed by Philharmonic musicians. Music Director Alan Gilbert will conduct three programs, July 29–31, including an all-American program and works by Mendelssohn, Mahler, Mozart, and Shostakovich. The other Philharmonic concerts, conducted by Bramwell Tovey (July 24 and 26) and former New York Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Joshua Weilerstein (July 25), will feature works by Grieg, Elgar, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Richard Strauss, among others. The soloists appearing during the Orchestra’s residency are pianists Jon Kimura Parker and Anne-Marie McDermott, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, violinist Midori, soprano Julia Bullock and tenor Ben Bliss, and Acting Concertmaster Sheryl Staples and Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps. The New York Philharmonic has performed at Bravo! Vail each summer since 2003. Twelfth Concert of the 113th Season 113th Annual Choral Union Series Program Notes Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 root tone G on its lowest note, the flute and FELIX MENDELSSOHN (1809-1847) clarinets in pairs are entrusted with the gentle melody. On the opening G string, the solo uring his short life of 38 years, violin becomes the fundament of this delicate Mendelssohn dominated the passage. The two themes are worked out until musical world of Germany and their development reaches the cadenza, exercised the same influence in which Mendelssohn wrote out in full. The England for more than a gener cadenza, in turn, serves as a transition to the ationD after his death. The reason for this may reprise. -

Kammerorchester des Symphonieorchesters des BR The Chamber Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded by Radoslaw Szulc and Karl Wagner in 2000 to mark the 50th anniversary of the symphony orchestra. Thus emerged a flexible collective of virtuosic players dedicated to cultivating the chamber music ideal. As primus inter pares Radoslaw Szulc oversees the ensemble’s artistic direction. The ensemble has been hailed by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung ”…from the start a first-rate orchestra with its own character. Their sophisticated playing has differentiated structures of communication as well as musical verve…they give special attention to a full sound and achieve the aspired ideal with utmost instrumental precision.” TV and CD productions quickly followed, starting with Tchaikovsky´s works for string orchestra. The chamber orchestra became known early on for its homogenous and lush string sound. They appear frequently in the major musical centers of Europe as well as at international festivals. The chamber orchestra developed a close friendship with Hélène Grimaud and Frank Peter Zimmermann. In 2011 Mozart´s piano concertos in F Major KV 459 and in A Major KV 488 featuring Hélène Grimaud were released by Deutsche Grammophon and became number one on the US Classic Charts. In 2014 the chamber orchestra began recording all of the Mozart violin concertos with Frank Peter Zimmermann; even before completion of the project in 2015 the first part of the recordings appeared in the Classic Charts. The orchestra has also recorded several Bach violin concertos featuring Lisa Batiashvili for Deutsche Grammophon. The chamber orchestra frequently collaborates with other famous soloists such as Lang Lang, Julia Fischer, Mischa Maisky, Sabine Meyer, Pinchas Zukerman, Diana Damrau, Igor Levit, Vadim Repin, Janine Jansen und Maxim Vengerov. -

West Side Story
To Our Readers ow can something be as fresh, as bril Hliant, as explosively urgent as "West Side Story," and be 50 years old? How can this brand new idea for the American theatre have been around for half a century? Leonard Bernstein used to say that he wished he could write the Great American Opera. He was still designing such a project shortly before his death. But in retrospect, we can say that he fulfilled his wish. "West Side Story" is performed to enthusiastic audiences in opera houses around the world - recently in La Scala and, before this year is out, at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. Is there a Broadway revival in the works? The signs are highly auspicious. In this issue, we celebrate "West Side Story": its authors, its original performers, and its continuing vital presence in the world. Chita Rivera regrets that, due to scheduling conflicts, she was unable to contribute to this issue by print time. [ wEst SIDE ·sronv L "West Side Story" continues to break ground to this very day. Earlier this year, the show was performed by inmates at Sing Sing. A few months later, it was presented as part of a conflict resolution initiative for warring street gangs in Seattle. And if there's a heaven, Leonard Bernstein was up there dancing for joy last summer while Gustavo Dudamel led his sensational 200-piece Simon Bolfvar Youth Orchestra in the "Mambo" at the Proms in London. Johnson (212) 875-5700; [email protected] BRAMWELL TOVEY and YEFIM BRONFMAN TO RETURN TO NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC BARTÓK’s Piano Concerto No. 2 MUSORGSKY’s Pictures at an Exhibition SMETANA’s The Bartered Bride Overture December 27–30, 2017 Bramwell Tovey will conduct the New York Philharmonic in Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with Yefim Bronfman as soloist; Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (in Ravel’s orchestration); and Smetana’s The Bartered Bride Overture, Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, December 28 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, December 29 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, December 30 at 8:00 p.m. Yefim Bronfman — a Philharmonic Board Member and the 2013–14 season Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence, who made his debut with the Orchestra almost 40 years ago — won a 1997 Grammy Award for his recording of Bartók’s complete piano concertos with the Los Angeles Philharmonic led by Esa-Pekka Salonen, now the Philharmonic’s Marie-Josée Kravis Composer-in- Residence. The Los Angeles Times wrote of Mr. Bronfman’s performance of Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2009: “This happens to be one of the most virtuosic concertos in the standard repertory and Bronfman’s playing was a finely spun whirl of notes that verged on the unbelievable.” Bramwell Tovey will also conduct Members of the New York Philharmonic in New Year’s Eve: Bernstein on Broadway, December 31, 2017, featuring vocalists Annaleigh Ashford, Christopher Jackson, Laura Osnes, and Aaron Tveit. -
