Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Emerald ash borer is an exotic beetle that probably arrived in the United States on solid wood packing material carried in cargo ships or airplanes originating in its native Asia. The EAB has killed tens of millions Ash trees since it was first discovered.  First found in the USA in 2002 in Michigan  Found in Pennsylvania 2007 As of July 17, 2012 EAB is present in 27 counties in Pa & 11 Counties in NY Adults, ½” long Body, shiny green (emerald) Host tree – ALL ASH TREES Adults lay eggs in bark crevices, Larva hatch, bore into the tree and feed on the phloem creating “S” shaped galleries, Adults emerge in June, look for “D” shaped exit holes Signs & Symptoms * Top Dieback * Epicormic Branching You never know what’s hiding in your firewood… * Split Bark * Woodpecker Damage The EAB is spread by the movement of wood products especially To protect Pennsylvania’s Forests from insects like the Emerald Ash firewood.
