2019 No. 81, Stouffville Corridor GO Expansion, Page 66 Credit: EllisDon Top100 Projects 2019 Turning Over In Top100 Projects — 2019 Record Numbers An annual report inserted in f you only read through the first 10 projects in this report, little ReNew Canada’s will seem different. Only one project is gone, and the one that January/February 2019 issue I took its place, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, has been part of our report for years. But looking beyond the top 10 shows a different trend, one that indicates record turnover in megaproject EDITOR Andrew Macklin development in Canada. [email protected] This year’s report sees the inclusion of 23 new projects, a record number by our report standards. To put this in perspective, a typical PUBLISHER Todd Latham year sees 12-15 projects leave the list based on completion. So what’s changed? For starters, there really were a large number DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS Elena Langlois of projects that saw substantial completion; 2018 was a banner year Development for getting things done. But we also removed a handful of projects that have clearly stalled, no longer meeting the “currently under ART DIRECTOR Donna Endacott development” requirement that is part of this annual exercise. AND DESIGN And despite a year of political upheaval in many parts of the country, be it at the municipal or provincial scale, new megaprojects CONTENT AND are moving forward at a solid rate. This can still be said in the latter MARKETING Todd Westcott Manager part of 2018 despite not having a clear picture of the infrastructure priorities of two of Canada’s largest provinces thanks to new ADVERTISING Elena Langlois governments being installed. [email protected] We also considered a new number one for this year’s report, as our Todd Latham research team attempted to come to terms with how best to represent [email protected] the $13.5-billion GO Expansion (formerly RER) project in Ontario. At the end of the day, rather than have it trump the Bruce Power refurbishment project at the top, we chose to break it down in the nine budgeted areas, the same way the project is represented by Metrolinx’s chief capital officer Peter Zuk, and add as appropriate to this year’s report. ReNew Canada is published As is the case each year, we continue to refine the requirements for six times a year by Actual Media Inc. inclusion on our list. Projects must be currently under development; 147 Spadina Avenue, Unit 208 it must be a public sector project; it must have a defined scope of Toronto, ON M5V 2L7 work and dollar value; and it must have funding committed past Phone: 416.444.5842 the initial design and environmental assessment phase. That last Subscription services: 416-444-5842, ext 117 requirement is key, as projects have appeared in the past that were being studied and designed, but did not have funding to move forward. That doesn’t make a project a reality, so it should not be included on our list.
