Day 2 Tuesday 15th January Terry and Clive arrived around 8:30 to Mercure Hotel and the rest arrived close to mid-night. Day 3 Wednesday 16th January A very early start to catch our flight to Galapagos Islands, the weather conditions had us leaving half an hour than the scheduled time but we arrive in Baltra airport slightly before 11:00 AM, then transfer to the “Cachalote” and sail to Itabaca Channel for a short stop to get supplies, later on we sailed to Islas Plazas arriving into South Plaza near 3:30 PM for our first land visit; slightly after 10:00 PM we sailed to San Cristobal Island. -

The intertidal migration of the four-eyed fish Anableps anableps L. (Anablepidae, Cyprinodontiformes), a surface-swimming species, was observed along 2 large mangrove-lined creeks in North Brazil. The number, direction and size of the fish crossing fixed line transects were recorded at 5 min intervals using visual surveys during daylight at spring, mid- and neap tide cycles. Migration took place in a surge and was predictably structured and directly related to water level, current speed and direction, and recurred independent of creek and tide. The fish rode the early flood tide upstream towards the creek heads. After the ebb current peak, they returned in a surge along the same pathways. The intertidal distances travelled ranged from 0.7 to >2 km per tide. Fish density maxima occurred at early flood and late ebb tide, with more fish swimming alone during flood tide and largest group sizes during ebb tides. At neap high tides, fish aggregated in fewer accessible creek heads. When spring tides inundated wider creek areas and made additional creek heads available, maximum fish dispersal occurred. -

The isolation of South America from Central America and Africa during the Tertiary Period left a strong imprint on the biota of the Neotropics. For almost 100 million years Neotropical flora, fauna and microorganisms evolved in completely isolation. The emergence of a continuous land bridge, 3 Ma years ago, between Central and South America is well documented and is demonstrated by the arrival of temperate elements in South American highlands and concurrent appearance of South American taxa in Central America. There is strong evidence of displacement of the Neotropical fauna, especially mammals, by northern immigrants, but the same is not observed in relation to plants. -

Doğdu1, Serpil Karan1 1Molecular Ecology and Fisheries Genetics Laboratory, Marine Science Department, Faculty of Marine Science and Technology, Iskenderun Technical University, 31220 Iskenderun, Hatay, Turkey 2Fisheries Faculty, Firat University, 23119 Elazig, Turkey Abstract A checklist of non-indigenous marine fishes including bony, cartilaginous and jawless distributed along the Turkish Marine Waters was for the first time generated in the present study. The number of records of non-indigenous fish species found in Turkish marine waters were 101 of which 89 bony, 11 cartilaginous and 1 jawless. In terms of occurrence of non-indigenous fish species in the surrounding Turkish marine waters, the Mediterranean coast has the highest diversity (92 species), followed by the Aegean Sea (50 species), the Marmara Sea (11 species) and the Black Sea (2 species). The Indo-Pacific origin of the non-indigenous fish species is represented with 73 species while the Atlantic origin of the non-indigenous species is represented with 22 species. Only first occurrence of a species in the Mediterranean, Aegean, Marmara and Black Sea Coasts of Turkey is given with its literature in the list. Day 2 Tuesday 11th December Leisurely start in the morning for relaxed city tour in Quito downtown with the highlights of the “La Compañia” church, main square and “El Panecillo”, the weather was particularly propitious for the visit (sunny and clear), in the afternoon we returned to the area close to the hotel and had a late lunch, the afternoon was free to relax and rest from the long flight of the previous day and to get ready for the Galapagos trip. Day 3 Wednesday 12th December Early morning flight from Quito to Baltra, we had a couple of hours delay in Quito airport due low visibility and we finally took off at 9:30 AM which did not affected our first day in the islands, other than shortening our first afternoon in Bachas to 2 ½ hours only. -

Corresponding author: D. Dahelmi, [email protected] Abstract. Twospot catfish, Mystus nigriceps, known locally as 'ingir-ingir' fish, is a popular consumption fish with high economic value. The exploitation of M. nigriceps continuously increases over time, which causes the declining of its wild population. Human interference is needed to maintain its existence, e.g. through domestication. Hence, more studies are essential for the conservation of this species, including on morphological aspects. This study aimed to assess the morphometric variations of M. nigriceps populations from Kampar Kanan (KKA), Kampar Kiri (KKI) and Tebo Batang Alai (TBA) rivers. 33 morphometric characters were measured using the Truss method on 150 individuals M. nigriceps evenly collected from the three rivers. Kruskal-Walls analysis revealed that 15 characters were significantly different. Further tests using Mann-Whitney showed that the most significant differences (18 characters) were found between the KKA and TBA populations, while the least significant differences (7 characters) were observed between the KKI and TBA populations. The cluster analysis with phenogram indicated that the differences in the morphometric characters among populations were in accordance with their geographical distance. -

Wright Department of Integrative Biology, University of Guelph, 488 Gordon Street, Guelph, ON, N1G 2W1, Canada (Received 13 November 2013, Accepted 24 June 2015) The order Cyprinodontiformes contains an exceptional diversity of amphibious taxa, including at least 34 species from six families. These cyprinodontiforms often inhabit intertidal or ephemeral habitats characterized by low dissolved oxygen or otherwise poor water quality, conditions that have been hypothesized to drive the evolution of terrestriality. Most of the amphibious species are found in the Rivulidae, Nothobranchiidae and Fundulidae. It is currently unclear whether the pattern of amphibi- ousness observed in the Cyprinodontiformes is the result of repeated, independent evolutions, or stems from an amphibious common ancestor. Amphibious cyprinodontiforms leave water for a variety of reasons: some species emerse only briefly, to escape predation or capture prey, while others occupy ephemeral habitats by living for months at a time out of water. Fishes able to tolerate months of emer- sion must maintain respiratory gas exchange, nitrogen excretion and water and salt balance, but to date knowledge of the mechanisms that facilitate homeostasis on land is largely restricted to model species.
