SEPTEMBER 2012 Other September 2012 happenings ... • A dozen Air Force wounded warriors from around the country attended a two-day adaptive sports camp Sept. 14 and 15 at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, participating in events such as wheelchair basket- ball, cycling and kayaking. • The /Missing in Action retreat ceremony, an event on behalf of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, was held Sept. 21 at Randolph's Missing Man Monument. The ceremony was hosted by Army Col. James Chevallier, JBSA deputy commander and 502nd Air Base Wing vice commander. The guest speaker, retired Air Force Col. (Dr.) Thomas McNish, was a captain when he was shot down near Hanoi, Vietnam, Sept. 4, 1966. McNish was held as a POW for the next six and a half years until he was repatriated March 4, 1973. The ceremony included a moment of remembrance followed by a laying of the wreath, a 21-gun salute, rendition of “Taps” and the national anthem by the Air Force Band of the West bugler, and a fl y-by from the 12th Flying Training Wing. • Work on a $3.5 million communications infra- structure upgrade at Randolph involved the installa- tion of more than 40 miles of fi ber-optic cable. NOVEMBER 2012 • A decades-long era at Joint Base San Antonio-Ran- dolph came to an end Nov. 4, when the last movie was shown in the Taj Mahal theater. • An Air Force initiative now allows JBSA organiza- tions to obtain a variety of supplies in their own back- yard – forgoing the use of government purchase cards. Known as the Air Force Unit-Purchased Supplies Ef- ficiency Initiative, the program identifies surplus items on an installation – from office supplies and furniture to building materials and tools – and repurposes them to create local savings. • Randolph celebrated America Recycles Day Nov. 15 to raise recycling awareness and highlight the benefits of saving earth’s resources. • Two months after Air Education and Training Command ended telephone operator support for its bases, the command’s Communications Systems Squadron continues to refine a call tree at each lo- cation and improve a new online conference call scheduling system. • Air Force leaders announced Nov. 14 to mem- bers of the press the results of the commander- directed investigation regarding the occurrences of sexual misconduct within basic military training between October 2010 and June 2011.
