November 2019 November 2019 PO Box 27063, Mt Roskill, Auckland, New Zealand 1440 Phone: (09) 620-9797 MSNZ Meet & Greet evening held at the clubrooms in Oct Auckland Car Club’s Monthly Magazine – Race, Rally, Clubsport and more… FROM THE PRESIDENT Well we have just had a very busy month at the Auckland Car Club with many events happening. One event worth noting in particular is our Annual Roll of Honour ceremony held at the club rooms on the 16th of November where once again there were around 100 attendees. This event certainly gives you an idea of how the club has been in the lives of so many over the years. So much history, so many people that have come before us, certainly before me anyway, who have contributed so much to the sport and to the club. The Roll of Honour goes a little way to recognising and recording the achievement of these people. Congratulations to those 20 people that made it onto the board this year and thank you all that attended to make it such a great occasion. We start work almost immediately on next year’s ceremony and we welcome nominations from you out there that maybe go back a little further than some of us. There are three senior members of the club that are responsible for the selection process – Ted Jarvis, Mark Sheehan and Brian Rice or you can contact Craig Holmes the club secretary to propose your nominees. On behalf of the club I thank all four of the members mentioned above for their outstanding effort to be able to host this prestigious event. I would also make special notice of one other who has been front and centre every year since its inception. This is of course Kevin Lancaster, Kevin has done the club a fantastic service, and his presentations have been precise and entertaining. Unfortunately this year was Kevin’s last as MC and we will be looking for a replacement for next year so if you are (or know of) such a person please give Ted a call. Lastly, without sounding like a broken record, the executive would like to see some young blood on the committee. If you are an idea’s person, have time or energy on your side or simply want to contribute in some way we would be very glad to hear from you. I can almost guarantee you will at least enrich your understanding of the sport, how it works and who is involved behind the scenes. Don’t all rush at once with your résumé’s as no qualifications are required just a good friendly disposition will do. Until next time Brett Davy Welcome to our new members this month Bruce Gay Jordan Tweedie Jeffrey Vincent Paul Fougere Alan Parks Sam Tweedie Matt Gibson Georgia Malloy Spencer Malloy (Youth) ROLL OF HONOUR & MEMBERS REUNION 2019 INTRODUCING THE AUCKLAND CAR CLUB ROLL OF HONOUR INDUCTEES OF 2019 Owen Evans hails from a motorsport background founded by his father Laurie. Having been involved with Laurie’s trials, rallying and racing exploits as a lad, he eventually moved into competing in such events from the early 1970s and quickly established himself as a competitive rally driver. However, it was in motor racing he was to become a success at the wheel of touring cars then Porsche racing where he became a dominant figure. Having set the New Zealand Land Speed record in a potent Porsche 911 Turbo, an accident saw him retire from driving then concentrate on team management specifically mentoring his son Mitch who still holds intentional recognition on the professional Formula E World Series. Ken Flashman was one of the many members who contested every form of club and motorsport event possible. Although a keen competitor in car trials and early rallies, Ken became a legend at the wheel of his Cooper Vincent 500 in which he enjoyed considerable success in hillclimbs and club race meetings. He also became an exponent of production car racing, particularly in Datsuns and Holden Toranas in long distance events where he enjoyed several class wins. Ken’s successes were also matched by his willingness as a volunteer when not competing and through his notable sense of humour. Steve Gillard was a tireless behind the scenes contributor to motorsport. Having come into the sport via rallying, he embarked on various racing campaigns in saloon car racing and Formula fords. He then became a regular administrator, firstly for the Formula Ford Championship and spent time on the Motorsport New Zealand Racing Board. His involvement in the BNT NZ V8s Championship particularly as a board member saw him receive numerous accolades for his down to earth practical guidance. Karen Gillard on behalf of Steve Gillard Judy Hanbury is one of the trailblazers of New Zealand rallying. Along with her husband Roy, she entered motorsport contesting club hillclimbs, sprints and race meetings at the wheel of a standard but rapid Fiat 850 Fastback. After contesting some early trials and rallies she obtained an ex-works Morris Marina TC and established herself as a force to be reckoned with in both International and National events. She was the first woman to seriously contest rallying which opened the door for the many women competing in rallying today. Graham Hill is probably better referred to as “Mr Auckland Rallying” as his organisational involvement seemed to include most events held around the Forest for the Club’s first special stage rallies he went on to fill roles such as Route Co- ordinator, Clerk of Course and Assistant Clerk of Course for Club, Invitation and National rallies for nearly 20 years. Graham also competed in several rallies as co-driver notably for Quentin Phillips in National Championship events and also held senior vehicle scrutineering and safety supervision positions. He was also a long time Executive Committee Member and Rally Committee Chairman resulting in his Life Membership of the Club. Graham has also been awarded the Motorsport New Zealand Order of Merit for his contribution to New Zealand Motorsport. Steve Horne followed his father George into a lifelong career of cars and motorsport. As a qualified accountant and superb mechanical engineer, he was able to combine those management and technical skills to excel in various racing teams and organisations including Spears Speed Shop (NZ), Cook Motor Racing (NZ), Team VDS (Belgium and USA), Truesports (USA) and Tasman Motorsports (USA). Drivers he assisted to success are many but include Steve Millen, Reg Cook, Teddy Pillette, Bryan Herta and Bobby Rahal. Steve’s experiences included most forms of motorsport but his major successes came with multiple Indycar titles and double victory in the Indianapolis 500. Frank Radisich initially became synonymous with Allcomers saloon car racing in the mid-1960s at the wheel of the now legendary Humber-Jag followed by the rapid ex-David Simpson Lotus Anglia Fastback. Having been a front runner in saloon cars, especially long-distance production car racing, he then turned his focus to single seaters. After initially campaigning a Lotus 22, he moved into the big league driving his self-built HCM Cosworth followed by a McLaren M4A, M10A and M10B in which he achieved considerable success. Frank then concentrated on the Castrol GTX saloon series at the wheel of a potent Escort RS1600 and Mazda RX2 in which he also contested the Bathurst 1000 in Australia. Attention eventually turned to his son Paul’s racing career which proved hugely successful particularly in winning the FIA World Touring Car Championship twice. Brian Rice has been a motorsport identity over six decades in which his activities commenced as a mechanic for the likes of Sir Tom Clarke (Ferrari), Ross Jensen (Maserati, Jaguar), Jim Boyd (Lycoming, Cooper Holden, Valour) and Greg Lancaster (Tranzam Mustangs, Volvo). He also contested many races as a driver including cars such as Cooper-Holden, Volvo and Mini 7s. Brian was also prominent in administration having been an Executive Committee member for several years. He was also the Race Starter at Pukekohe and served as Assistant Clerk of Course at some club rallies together with co-driving in several rallies. Tony Marsh is another of a long line of mechanics who became a motorsport technical specialist and successful racing driver. Having worked as a mechanic and engineer in various racing teams covering touring cars, single seaters and rally cars it was as a performance engine specialist he was to become a legend. Tony’s engine building experience covered two litre touring cars and rally cars, Formula Ford, Formula Pacific and NZ V8 touring cars. He also hotly contested 2 litre Shellsport racing in the 1970s and early 1980s culminating in his winning the New Zealand Saloon Car Championship. Tony still holds a high Collected on behalf of Tony Marsh engineering profile preparing engines for his son’s top fuel drag racing. Chris Porter came into rallying via the Porter family interest in Masport and after joining the Masport Escort Team as co- driver for Jim Donald was instrumental in the corporate aspects of Masport’s sponsorship involvement. After one and a half seasons alongside JD, he moved across to co-drive with Blair Robson and the duo won the 1978 NZ Rally Championship and claimed an historic 3rd overall in the 1979 Rally of NZ against a top class international field. Blair and Chris also achieved top ren placings in the 1976 and 1977 Southern Cross Rallies and the 1979 Castrol International Rally in Australia. He was also co-driver for British Champion Russell Brookes when they won the 1978 Rally of NZ and for also for Finnish superstar Pentii Airikkala in the 1980 Rally of NZ.

  • Peugeot 3008 DKR: Nuovi Artigli Per La Dakar 2017

CLASSIC LINES APRIL 2016 EASTER SUNDAY OBSERVATION RUN What an absolutely fabulous day we had on Easter Sunday! Commencing in Eumundi we wound our way through North Arm, Eerwah Vale, Belli Park, Imbil, Kandanga and a lovely “Al Fresco” morning tea adjacent to the old Amamoor Railway Station. As well as keeping our eyes peeled so we could answer the questions, we had a quiz on cars (for the boys!) while we ate. We then headed north past Dagun, The Dawn, South Gympie, Glastonbury and then through to Widgee (W of Gympie). After a slightly soggy start we ate lunch on the banks of Station Creek in Marg McIntosh … Park, with yet another quiz, this time about car badges! There was also an Easter Bonnet competition - won by Liz Jones. It was a terrific day, really well organized with great company and heaps of fun. At the end of the day second prize went to Team Elmo (Lou and Annie) .... and guess what ... Michael and I won a bottle of wine for coming first!!! (Wonders will never cease)!! The day was really well organised with a lot effort going into its organization. Many, many thanks to Judy and Graham. Helen Gavigan Lunch Run to Secrets on the Lake 13 March 2016 This event was organized by Judy Bickley and Annie Jennings the Club’s incoming and outgoing Social/ Events Managers. The arrangement was for participants to meet at the restaurant rather than proceeding there in convoy, 37 members doing so. Irrespective of the route taken the drive was spectacular and the steep decline down to the lake’s edge a test of brakes or cooling systems depending on which direction one was going.

Farming can be so frustrating at times, however it can also be so much fun writing about the frustrations!! As indicated last month, it’s been a journey, however the ewes have come so far in a short space of time. It just goes to show what a little bribery can achieve. Just yesterday I left them I’ve seen this before, however I am compelled in an outside yard while I went to refill the bulk to comment as it is doing the rounds of the feed bin from the bags I keep in the barn. I local papers. Youi Insurance CEO Frank Costigan came back around the corner …. Ohhh bollocks, is quoted as saying that green is the safest no sheep. colour for a car, as, according to their accident frequency research, green cars record the First thought – they’ve hatched another lowest number of accident claims across NZ. dastardly plan to foil me and perhaps vaporized themselves. Wrong. Teleported to another time Now just think about that for a minute. or place?? Wrong again. Look at the statistics he has based this claim It turned out they had had got tired of waiting, on!! If he had stopped to think about what he had pushed open the gate, made their way into was saying and research any conclusion before the shed and were halfway up onto the milking bursting forth, I’d suggest that he could have platform, impatient for me to come back with avoided confirming beyond doubt that with one their nibbles!! They are, needless to say, very more IQ point he could, probably, just about, happy and much improved in their attitudes.

PROGRAMME PEUGEOT SPORT 2008 - Press release - Peugeot 908 HDi FAP - Technical Data - Calendar - Drivers - The team - Press officer - Motor Sport Promotional Activities 2008 PROGRAMME A YEAR OF MANY CHALLENGES The 2007 season turned out to be one of the most rewarding ever for Peugeot Sport which launched four different new cars on the world motor sport scene, from the factory programme with the 908 HDi FAP to its package of promotional formulae with the 207 LW THP, 207 Super 2000 and Spider THP. The lessons learned by the team while finding its marks last year will be implemented in 2008 and all its energy will be devoted to building on that experience to achieve its objectives. This time last year, under the leadership of Michel Barge, Peugeot Sport organised a dynamic presentation of the new 908 HDi FAP to announce its modest objectives for the season ahead. Following the car's initial gestation, which was rapid to say the least, Team Peugeot Total enjoyed a memorable season which brought its fair share of surprises, satisfactions and passion, not to mention the unrelenting toil which enabled it to secure results well beyond its expectations and targets. Indeed, never in Peugeot's history had a competition car won out of the box, yet the 908 HDi FAP claimed victory in its debut race at Monza before going on to clinch the 2007 Le Mans Series. Team Peugeot Total won all six rounds, started from pole position each time and posted every fastest race lap, not to mention its unhoped-for performance at Le Mans where it started from pole position before taking second place at the end of the 24-hour race.
