Trade books offer opportunity for interdisciplinary units to develop through the rise of informational text use in both English/language arts and history/social studies. Primary source documents serve as a liaison to filing gaps in the information left out from textbooks and trade books. A more thorough understanding of historical figures and events are a result of such analysis. The initiatives do not dictate specific curricular material; teachers use their discretion when choosing available trade books, primary documents, and other curricular resources. In this research, I qualify and quantify how the Titanic, a popular historical ship tragedy associated with theory, is portrayed in trade books. Representations within 30 trade books concerning the Titanic are addressed and analyzed. Recommendations and rationale for trade book selection and implementation in elementary school are addressed. Ask questions, find answers, and never stop wondering; we are all lifelong learners. I want to thank my 3rd grade students from my student teaching placement in Charleston, Illinois. Without your interest in the Titanic I never would have thought of researching this significant part of history. May you always live and think with a skeptical and intriguing mind. His professional and personal care allowed myself as a researcher, student, and young woman to grow and flourish. I have become a more well-rounded person and educator because of his efforts. I want to also thank my two other thesis committee members, Dr. Fern Kory and Dr. Daniel Carter. Through their guidance and constructive feedback, I was able to produce research that was meaningful to my career. My mother, Carol Graham, deserves the utmost recognition. She has been my biggest supporter throughout my entire graduate education. She pushes me to always be my best in whatever I do and reminds me that I can do anything that I set my mind to.
