Saretzky, Curator Eugene Osovitz, Preparer Produced by the Monmouth County Archives 125 Symmes Drive Manalapan, NJ 07726 New Jersey in Focus: The World War I Era, 1910-1920 About one hundred years ago, during the 1910-1920 decade in America, the economy boomed and the Gross National Product more than doubled. Ten million Americans bought automobiles, most for the first time. Ford’s Model T, produced with then revolutionary assembly line methods, transformed family life for owners. Such personal “machines” led to paved roads and the first traffic light, reduced the need for blacksmiths and horses, increased the demand for auto mechanics and gas stations, and, when not caught up in traffic jams, sped up daily life. Some owners braved dirt roads to drive to the Jersey Shore, where thousands thronged to see the annual Baby Parade in Asbury Park. While roads at the start of the decade were barely adequate for travel in the emerging auto boom, New Jersey became a leader in the advocacy and construction of improved thoroughfares. Better road and rail transportation facilitated both industrial and agricultural production, bringing such new products as commercially grown blueberries from Whitesbog, New Jersey, to urban dwellers. In the air, history was made in 1912, when the first flight to deliver mail between two government post offices landed in South Amboy. -

Il est le 4e fils du capitaine Samuel MURDOCH et de Jane MUIRHEAD McMASTER. Il a 2 frères et 2 sœurs. En 1887, William MURDOCH est diplômé de la Dalbeattie Higth school. En 1888, il fait son apprentissage à bord du Charles Cosworth de Liverpool (Angleterre). Il obtient son brevet de capitaine au long cours en 1896 et entre à la White Star Line en 1899. Il se marie en 1907 avec Ada Florence BANKS, néo-zélandaise. Ils n’ont pas d’enfants. 1 “I Thought it Was a Narrow Shave” A Revised Analysis of the Iceberg Encounter by Samuel Halpern At 10:00pm, ship’s time, Sunday night, April 14th 1912, lookouts Frederick Fleet and Reginald Lee took their watch up in the crow’s nest, replacing lookouts George Symons and Archie Jewell. Before Symons and Jewell left the nest, they told Fleet and Lee to keep a sharp lookout for ice and growlers in particular, repeating the orders they received from the bridge earlier that night. According to Reginald Lee, it was about “nine or ten minutes” after seven bells were struck that a dark mass was spotted out on the water ahead of the ship.1 When asked how far ahead of the vessel was the iceberg, Lee responded by saying, “It might have been half a mile or more; it might have been less; I could not give you the distance in that peculiar light.” When that dark mass was finally identified, Frederick Fleet was quick to react. He said to Lee, “There is ice ahead,” and immediately reached up and grabbed the lanyard of the lookout bell above his head and struck it three times to signal the officer on the bridge below that an object was sighted ahead. He then left his place on the port side of the nest and went behind Lee on the starboard side of the nest to get to the loud- speaking telephone that connected the crow’s nest with a loud-speaking phone in the wheelhouse. As Fleet would later recall, “I asked them were they there, and they said yes.” They then asked, “What did you see?” to which Fleet replied, “Iceberg right ahead.” They then followed with, “Thank you.” The person that answered the phone in the wheelhouse was Sixth Officer James Moody. -

THE PARISH-ROSSEEL COLLECTION Mss. Coll. No. 5 38 linear ft. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE David Parish (1778-1826) arrived in America in late 1805. The owner of a successful banking and commission house in Antwerp, he came to this country as the American based partner in a profitable enterprise of shipping bullion from Spanish America to Europe. He directed this business from Philadelphia where he made a fortune estimated at one million dollars. Upon his arrival in America, David Parish visited Gouverneur Morris who had been a friend of David's father when Morris was United States Minister to France. In the spring of 1807, Morris visited Parish and told him of vast lands in northern New York and suggested that they would be a good investment. In the spring of 1808, with Joseph Rosseel as his land agent, David Parish began purchasing land in the North Country. One of his first purchases was 72,000 acres at one dollar and fifty cents per acre. He later added to this by purchasing large tracts of Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties. In 1804 there were only four families living in Ogdensburg. In 1809 David Parish bought the unsold portion (only thirty eight lots had been sold) of the village from Samuel Ogden for eight thousand dollars. Parish saw the possibility of turning Ogdensburg into a main forwarding station on the St. Lawrence River and he made efforts to create a large commercial center there. As a result of hard work on the part of Parish and Rosseel, the town grew considerably in the years before the War of 1812. -
