An Enduring Presence: Bruce Hodgins 1931 - 2019

By Geof Hodgins, Wanapitei President, Board of Directors

HE SPIRIT OF Wanapitei is found in the natural world and celebrated through the joy of sharing a wilderness T canoeing experience. It is heard in the cal of the loon, the rustle of leaves, the roar of the rapids, and the crackling of a campfire. It is seen through the cool grey mists of dawn and felt in the sudden waf of a warm summer breeze. The essence may be found in the excitement and chalenge of whitewater, or in the peace and tranquility of forest paths, yet it gains strength and purpose in those relationships which foster warmth, confidence and consideration for others. Wanapitei is more connections, intuitively understood earlier, his parents Stanley and Laura than just a place or a group of people: it is an that an experience shared is an Belle, Stan’s sister Edna, his brother idea, an inner emotion, perhaps even a experience multiplied and recognized Cecil, Cecil’s bride Margarite, her moment of truth which lives on in the that “whatever we make of our own brother and sister and another friend memory of those who have shared stories, we make nothing without the had set out from in four the experience.” land” (John Wadland, Bruce’s wood canvas .
