Their daughter Julia, who was only six years old during her initial trip here, immediately fell in love with Sanibel. “We liked coming here because we’d run into the same friends we made the year before,” said Julia, who visited the island last week with her parents, John and Sharon, as well as her own children, Tanner, 8, and Finnley, 5. “After our first stay, my mother decided that we were gonna come back here for a whole month the following year.” In fact, when Julia was 20, she decided to stay even longer. For five years, she lived in Fort Myers Beach and worked at both The Bubble Room and ‘Tween Waters Inn during her tenure as a Southwest Florida resident. “Living and working on the islands kinda mellows you out,” she said. “You feel so welcome here, and always safe.” Her mother agrees. “The thing I liked the most about coming here is that the children have to create their own fun,” explained Sharon. “And on Sanibel, you can have a lot of fun with just a pail and a shovel.” Julia eventually moved back to Illinois and started her own family. So now, she is passing along her love for the islands to yet another generation. “I like in the pool and collecting shells on the beach,” said Tanner, while Finnley stated that she liked to go see the birds on display in front of Jerry’s Market. When asked why, after more than three decades, the family still stays at Sanibel Arms, each member of the family shared their own thoughts. “If you’re heading to the pool and you don’t know anybody there, by the time you come back, you’ve made a new friend,” said Sharon, who said that she enjoys walking Three generations of the Day Family, vacationing from Peoria, Illinois, visited the Sanibel to and from the Sanibel Lighthouse, stopping off at the Lighthouse Café for breakfast Arms Condominiums again last week or an ice cream at Pinocchio’s. by Jeff Lysiak “The other night, we met a guy who was for sea shells. Celia Hills shows youngsters how to prepare a healthy and tasty meal the evening teaching the children and their parents/guardians about the importance of a balanced diet. She then demonstrated how to cook tasty, healthy meals for an entire family. The participants not only got to watch, but also helped prepare and, perhaps most importantly, taste their kitchen creations. “It’s truly wonderful to be able to organize these educational events for our island families,” said Bill Fellows, president of FISH. “We hope that this inspires and teaches our young participants to use what they’ve learned, and help their families prepare nutritious meals in the future. We are very happy with the turnout and cannot wait to organize another Cooking With Kids event in the near future.” FISHH of Sanibel, Inc. is a non-profit, staffed by more than 200 volunteers, assist- ing Sanibel and Captiva islanders and visitors with a wide range of services. Although we are probably Anot alone in this sentiment, we feel it very strongly, especially this time of the year. We just finished our summer celebration and exploration of all things sea turtle, and it was one of our best weeks yet. Campers spent a ton of time in the water this week, experiencing life from a sea turtle’s perspective. We went on a long-distance snorkel over a sea grass bed and practiced diving down to get our faces right in the sea grass – it was hard to recreate the green sea turtle’s urge to take a big bite. Girl Scouts constructing CROW boxes arlier this month, the Asplundh Tree Service began its contracted services to cut back the trees under the electrical power lines on Sanibel’s main arterial roadways. Participants in the Rescue Me campaign for 2012 E The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife is working with the City of Sanibel, LCEC and Asplundh Tree Service in an effort to protect our nesting birds. This huge undertaking requires a team of volunteers who can help identify which trees have nests and mark those trees in advance to alert the tree service crews. If an active nest is displaced or babies have fallen, the Asplundh Tree Service crew will place the nests and/or babies in Rescue Me boxes created by local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, mark the location where the babies were found and then deliver them to CROW for short-term rehabilitative care and release back at the original nest site. Volunteers from the community are also helping with this Rescue Me campaign. Experienced birders who can help identify active nests are walking the roadway and marking the trees where nests are located. More than 35 miles of tree work along the roadways is planned for this summer and the Rescue Me campaign is an example of what can happen when people and organizations work together to protect our wildlife friends and neighbors. If anyone is interested in volunteering to be a part of this community effort, call CROW at 472-3644 ext. 227. Whether you want bright yellow color, a nectar plant for native butterflies, skippers and bees, or an easy-to-grow plant, you’ll love this flower. In the wild, it grows in hammocks, pinelands, prai- ries, on roadsides and even on beaches. The word linearis in the Latin name refers to the narrow leaves, and flaveria derives from the Latin word for yellow. So intense is that color that some species of flaveria are used as dyes. Many tiny tubular florets make up the flat-topped upright flowerheads. The erect stems are many- branched and often reddish, and the evergreen leaves are two to four inches long. This member of the aster family reaches two to four feet, so it’s attractive in mass plantings, especially in color contrast to other wildflowers. Moderate- to fast-growing, it adapts to various soils and has low nutritional needs, so it’s a good choice for natural low-maintenance garden. It grows best in full sun and is moderately drought and salt tolerant. Encourage flowering by pruning after blooming season. Propagate narrrowleaf yellowtop with seed, cut- tings, by division or simply let it reseed. A new lamp can work wonders. One of the best selections of lamps on the islands can be found at Sanibel Home Furnishings, especially right now, A selection of lamps at Sanibel Home Furnishings when a new batch of both table and floor models is now in the showroom. Many are unique and artistic, such as the stacked loggerhead turtle hatchlings stacked one upon the other to form a base. Most have an organic quality that serves well in island homes, using driftwood, curved lines that suggest the ocean and shapes from nature. One popular vase-style design can be ordered in 10 colors and its drum shade can be made of fabric or painted. Even choose one color inside and another outside to match any décor if you like, said store co-owner Carl Knight. This season the women’s fashion trend is all about color – vibrant, primary and eyecatching color and it’s said that home decorating follows fashion trends. However, at Sanibel Home Furnishings, that’s not the case. This island store has been featuring color ever since its inception, so the colorful hues seen on the racks at fashion stores this season are nothing new here. “Color is our big thing,” said Knight. That means the shades of the subtropics – turquoise, lime green, azure, raspberry pink, mango, sunny yellow and tangerine. The store’s line of comfortable sofas and chairs reflect the same hues – and since they come in “performance” fabrics, there’s no need to worry about stains. Ikat or tribal prints are hot right now, he said. And this trend does follow clothing fashion. Ikat doesn’t have the hard lines of some tribal prints so it teams beautifully with the lighter tones favored by many island homeowners. Speaking of fabrics, new bedding, rugs and pillows are due in later this summer for those who want to freshen up a particular room without major redecorating.
