During the event weekends, visitors will enjoy everything from decorated golf cart and lighted parades to Junkanoo and fire dancers, live music and even a Marching Mullet Parade. All three weekends of events take place in Captiva’s “village” center, where its col- orful restaurants and shops will be festively decorated. Our wildlife hospital has often been wall-to-wall with baby birds including cardinals, owls, doves, ospreys, eagles, jays, herons, mockingbirds and hawks; and baby squirrels, opossums, raccoons and rabbits will soon be arriving. Caring for those infants is costly, not only because of the special baby formulas needed but also because of the labor-intensive nature of baby care. It is not uncommon for babies at CROW to be fed every two hours and also requires a hands-on approach to providing necessary stimulation to induce healthy growth. Summer puts a tremendous strain on our resources, both financial and human.” Summer is also the time when injured sea turtles begin to appear at CROW’s special sea turtle rehabilitation facility. According to CROW’s hospital director Dr. Heather Barron, the care and rehabilitation of those special patients can be a long and costly process. If you would like to support “So many of our sea turtles are admitted with life-threatening injuries and illnesses and their critical care often involves surgical CROW and its efforts intervention and long-term rehabilitation” said Dr. Barron. “The daily care and rehabilitative process includes diagnostic testing, antibiotics and other expensive pharmaceutical care that can last for months due to the slow metabolic healing process in sea turtles.
