It is also time to think about new winter builds or restoration/overhaul projects. In the last few weeks we have seen Terry Martin purchase a new boat, a fishing cruiser which is already up and running on the water as well as Mike Skuse, who purchased a Billings Krabbentkutter, which is now up and running as well! No excuses either of you now, we all want to see them on the water. Also Mike Dowsett has also purchase 2 new boats! A Flower class corvette and a small 1/72 vosper. I would also like to take this opportunity to say a big THANKYOU to Terry Martin, as he is standing down from the committee this year as Treasurer. He has worked hard over the few years he has been on the committee playing devil’s advocate when we want to spend money!! On a side note, we have been invited to put on a static and water display in Hitchin Market in October. We will be asking for volunteers to help out at this event. It will be on a Saturday between 10 till 4, date to be confirmed. We have also been asked if we could put on a “have a go” boats section This is in the early stages at present but will be a club 500 scenario which will of course be throttled back!.

  • British Prime Minister Winston Churchill Issued the Order “Sink the Bismarck!”
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill issued the order “Sink the Bismarck!” The Bismarck was a German battleship and one of the most famous warships of the Second World War. The lead ship of her class, named after the 19th century German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, Bismarck displaced more than 50,000 tonnes fully loaded and was the largest warship then commissioned.[2] Bismarck took part in only one operation during her brief career. She and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen left Gotenhafen (Gdynia) on the morning of 19 May 1941 for Operation Rheinübung, during which she was to have attempted to intercept and destroy convoys in transit between North America and the United Kingdom. When Bismarck and Prinz Eugen attempted to break out into the Atlantic, the two ships were discovered by the Royal Navy and brought to battle in the Denmark Strait. During the short engagement, the British battlecruiser HMS Hood, flagship of the Home Fleet and pride of the Royal Navy, was sunk after several minutes of firing. In response, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill issued the order "Sink the Bismarck!",[3] spurring her relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy. Two days later, with Bismarck almost in reach of safer waters, Fleet Air Arm Swordfish biplanes launched from the carrier HMS Ark Royal torpedoed the ship and jammed her rudder, allowing heavy British units to catch up with her. In the ensuing battle on the morning of 27 May 1941, Bismarck was heavily attacked for almost two hours before sinking.[4][5] Her destruction was reported on the front pages of newspapers around the world.

  • The Denmark Strait Battle, May 24Th 1941
The Denmark Strait Battle, May 24th 1941 Written by ANTONIO BONOMI and translated by PHIL ISAACS. Analysis of the famous engagement among major warships: Bismarck and Prinz Eugen against the Hood and Prince of Wales (plus Norfolk and Suffolk). I am sure that to any of us that happened to look at photos of important naval battles and tried to associate them with the chronological series of events there are inconsistencies in the way the events are portrayed. When I examined photos of the Bismarck taken during the Denmark Strait battle against the Hood and against the Prince of Wales the captions under the photos were often contradictory. One day on the Internet looking at various forums dedicated to this battle I have even read about a theory that assumed some of the photos had always been printed reversed (1). There seemed to be no sense to what was written. For such an important historical event why are there still so many doubts, errors and approximations. Naval history, the Kriegsmarine and military strategy are my passion, so I decided to re-construct that battle in full detail with all the supporting information from films (2), photos, prints and paint or drawings available (3). This article, consequently, does not have the intent to describe the whole Operation “Rheinübung” (4), but only to clarify the series of events which occurred during the Denmark Strait battle itself on the morning of Saturday May 24, 1941. The approach This engagement was composed of a German formation and two British Formations. The German formation included the battleship Bismarck (Kpt zur See Ernst Lindemann) with on board Admiral Gunther Lutjens, commander in chief of Kriegsmarine, and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen (Kpt zur See Helmut Brinkmann).
