A Guide to the Swedish Parliament
A guide to the Swedish Parliament The Riksdag building on the islet of Helgeands- holmen in the heart of Stockholm is the centre of Swedish democracy. This is where laws and the central government budget are determined. Come along on a tour of the Riksdag! 3 THE RIKSDAG BUILDING was inaugurated in 1905. The previous premises on Riddarholmen had become cramped, draughty and outdated. But over time the new building on Helgeandsholmen also became too small, and in 1983 it was joined together with the old Bank of Sweden building, with its characteristic crescent-shaped projection overlooking the water. 4 UNDERGROUND PASSAGEWAYS Seven of the Riksdag’s buildings are connected by underground passageways. One of these – “the Run” – is situated below the bridge over Stallkanalen, which connects lake Mälaren with the Baltic. Members often run here when hurrying to reach the Chamber. When the voting signal sounds, they have eight minutes to get to the Chamber. 5 THE CHAMBER is the heart of the Riksdag. It is here that the elected represen- tatives debate and take decisions. The members of the Riksdag sit according to constituency, irrespective of their party affiliation. The light streams in from big windows under the ceiling, illuminating the birch panelling. The public gallery has seats for visitors and media representatives. 6 MEMBERS’ OFFICES Being a democratically elected member of the Riksdag is a task that involves no fixed working hours and long working weeks. For many years members had neither offices nor accommodation. Their documents were kept in desks in the Chamber. Today each member is provided with an office in one of the Riksdag buildings. -
Fredrik Reinfeldt
2014 Press release 03 June 2014 Prime Minister's Office REMINDER: German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to Harpsund On Monday and Tuesday 9-10 June, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt will host a high-level meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at Harpsund. The European Union needs to improve job creation and growth now that the EU is gradually recovering from the economic crisis. At the same time, the EU is facing institutional changes with a new European Parliament and a new European Commission taking office in the autumn. Sweden, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands are all reform and growth-oriented countries. As far as Sweden is concerned, it will be important to emphasise structural reforms to boost EU competitiveness, strengthen the Single Market, increase trade relations and promote free movement. These issues will be at the centre of the discussions at Harpsund. Germany, the UK and the Netherlands, like Sweden, are on the World Economic Forum's list of the world's ten most competitive countries. It is natural, therefore, for these countries to come together to compare experiences and discuss EU reform. Programme points: Monday 9 June 18.30 Chancellor Merkel, PM Cameron and PM Rutte arrive at Harpsund; outdoor photo opportunity/door step. Tuesday 10 June 10.30 Joint concluding press conference. Possible further photo opportunities will be announced later. Accreditation is required through the MFA International Press Centre. Applications close on 4 June at 18.00. -

För Sverige I Tiden? En Studie Om Den Svenska Monarkins Relation Till Samhället Och Sekulariseringsprocessen Mellan 1858-2012
Kandidatuppsats För Sverige i tiden? En studie om den svenska monarkins relation till samhället och sekulariseringsprocessen mellan 1858-2012 Författare: Joel Håkansson Examinator: Åsa Trulsson Handledare: Stefan Arvidsson Termin: HT12 Ämne: Religionsvetenskap Nivå: Grundnivå Kurskod: GI1203 Abstract For Sweden – with the times? A study of the Swedish monarchy's relation to society and the secularization process 1858-2012. Christendom has under a long period of time in Swedish history been the central component in legitimating the monarchs' power, a continuous process than can be clearly observed through the customs of royal coronation and baptism rites. However, during the 20th century those close ties between the state and the church of Sweden have been dissolving at a steady rate, alongside a growing societal democratization and modernization process. Officially the monarch still had a clear constitutional power legitimated through the transcendent, but unofficially his power was in reality heavily reduced. How do the Swedish monarchy relate to a rapidly changing society and secularization process? This pilot study investigates this relation by analyzing the news reports of the royal coronation and baptism rites between 1858 and 2012 from two leading newspapers, Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter. Principally two sides of the monarchy could be identified, one slow changing external side with a close connection with the national identity through history, religion and tradition, and a more swift and growing internal side with a clear connection with the ordinary citizen, family values and social norms. In conclusion the Swedish monarchy seemed to have progressed from a clear sacral foundation to a more family oriented development. -

Restaurants Closing During the Summer Months (2016)
JUNE 22, 2016 Restaurants Closing During the Summer Months (2016) This post may come as bad news, at least for "foodies" visiting Stockholm in July and early August. Many top tier restaurants (Michelin star, gourmet) close for a few weeks during the summer. This is mainly due to the generous Swedish vacation rules leading many top restaurants to feel that they can't offer excellent food & service with summer replacement staff. Another reason, perhaps, is that many Stockholmers leave the city during this period and there aren't enough visiting "foodies" to fill these types of restaurants to make it profitable. No businessmen in town either... wining & dining clients. At any rate, the good news is that there are a few which will be open all summer and several other top restaurants have some other options during these weeks... and you always have a plethora of other great restaurants in the city to choose from! Most of these restaurants are also closed during the big Midsummer holiday weekend (June 24th-26th). Michelin star and Bib Gourmand restaurants: • Mathias Dahlgren- closed between July 15th and August 9th (both the Dining Room and the Food Bar). • Frantzén- closes on July 9th. Reopening at a new & better location in 2017! • Oaxen Krog- open all summer as normal. • Oaxen Slip- open all summer... every day for lunch & dinner. • Gastrologik- open all summer, though their more casual Speceriet will be closed until the beginning of August for renovations. • Ekstedt- closed between July 17th and August 5th. • Esperanto- the dining room is closed between June 24th and August 5th. -
