Vilmos Kondor : Budapest Noir: A Novel before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Budapest Noir: A Novel:

Atmospheric, cinematic, exciting, suspensefulBy Laurence GoldsteinVilmos Kondor (translated from the Hungarian by Paul Olchvary), ldquo;Budapeat Noir.rdquo; Budapest, 1936 ndash; the prime minister dies, a prostitute is murdered, an honest cop is accused of corruption, Nazis and Communists are active en scene. Newspaper reporter Zsigmond Gordon is in the midst of it all. Atmospheric, cinematic, exciting, suspenseful. As with ldquo; An Unsuitable Job for a Womanrdquo; quoting myself: Often enough a mystery novel succeeds for me because I want to spend time with the protagonist, think Holmes, Marlowe, Dupin, Sgt Cuff, Charles , Professor Hilary Tamar. And so it is with Cordelia Gray. And so it is with Gordon, his girl friend Krisztina, and his grandfather, they leap off the page: they behave like real people.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well written and beautifully laid out.By RichyyrichJust because I like the book doesn't mean someone else will. Do not rely on other people's reviews of books or movies. It's personal preference. If you've ever been to and you can pronounce people's names and the names of streets and places in Hungarian this book is one I would definitely recommend. Also if you have never been there or know the pronunciations, this book is excellent in my opinion. Even though this author's books are fictional mysteries, they give a nice insight to what it was like to live in that time era in Eastern Europe.10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Gordon GumshoeBy Keith A. ComessThis book was recommended by Matt Rees, author of "Omar, the Palestinian Detective" series. That's how it came to my attention. Unfortunately, it perfectly illustrates the truth of the maxim, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" as this is a derivative work in every respect. In "Budapest Noir", a police-beat reporter for a Hungarian newspaper, circa 1936, arrives at a possible crime scene: a beautiful (but dead) woman with a book of Jewish scripture in her possession. This is a potentially mysterious occurrence since pre-war Hungary was not exactly known for its hospitality to Jews (much like present-day Hungary with the New RIght Jobik Party's baleful influence in full swing) and this particular Jewish woman was presumptively identified as a prostitute, presumably an unusual occupation for Jewish women in that day and age, especially beautiful ones from wealthy families. Of course, the death turns out to be a murder and the newly minted gumshoe is Zsigmund Gordon, the reporter and protagonist of the tale.Rigidly adhering to the usual noir strictures and conventions (atmospheric and portentious setting, abundant cigarette consumption, dour and portentious utterances, a backlot cast of characters) the story plods to an utterly predictable and easily guessed denouement. Kondor borrows heavily from Furst (pre-war and early wartime Europe), Kerr (the Bernie Gunther series) and, most unfortunately, from Rees. The inane sub-plot featuring the slightly daft and jelly/jam infatuated grandfather is right out of the Omar novels and is equally distracting and irrelevant to the plot. The tidy ending where all the threads are gathered together and the problem solved is just too pat.A novel like this one can only be pulled off if there is witty dialogue (Kerr, Chandler), novelty (the Furst novels when they debuted) or a particularly byzantine plot (like the brilliant screenplay for "Chinatown" by Robert Towne). Kondor succeeds in none of these regards. In summary, this is a pedestrian effort but the author's intimate knowledge of Hungarian politics in the tumultuous 1930s holds promise for better installments in what's likely to become an ongoing series.

A dark, riveting, and lightning fast novel of murder, intrigue, and political corruption, set in 1936 Hungary during the rise of Adolph Hitler and the Nazis in , Budapest Noir marks the emergence of an extraordinary new voice in literary crime fiction, Vilmos Kondor. Kondorrsquo;s remarkable debut brings this European city to breathtaking lifemdash;from the wealthy residential neighborhoods of Buda to the slums of Pestmdash;as it follows crime reporter Zsigmond Gordonrsquo;s investigation into the strange death of a beautiful woman. As Gordonrsquo;s search for the truth leads him to shocking revelations about a seedy underground crime syndicate and its corrupt political patrons, Budapest Noir will transport you to a dark time and place, and hold you there spellbound until the final page is turned.

"Budapest Noirnbsp;offers a haunting social and political critique, empowering us not to forget the emergence of one of history's darkest moments: the rise of Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany." (The Canberra Times)"Gordon is part Clark Kent, part Sherlock Holmes, combining an instinct for news with powers of deduction and a knack for righting wrongs in unconventional ways. [...]nbsp; Here's hoping that the volumes published to date become available in the United States sooner rather than later." - (Joe Hartlaub, Bookreporter)"Gordon comes much more to resemble the noir kingpin Marlowe, who, like this Hungarian journalist, often ended up investigating something from which he stood to profit little minus; just because it was the right thing to do." (Matt Rees, author of The Palestinian Quartet)"In the best noir tradition, a single crime opens a Pandora's box of deadly secrets. Kondor's labyrinthine plot kept me turning the pages until the final twist."(Steven Saylor, author of the Roma Sub Rosa mysteries)"Zsigmond Gordon is an engaging hero, possessed of a bitter-sweet cynicism and a powerful desire for justice, but is also uniquely Hungarian. Budapest Noir is an evocative and impressive debut." (Adam LeBor, author of The Budapest Protocol)From the Back CoverThe passing of the Hungarian prime minister before he could realize his dream of a fascist state has little effect on crime reporter Zsigmond Gordon. Lifemdash;and deathmdash;go on in the bustling old city, and a late-night tip soon leads him to a crime scene where a young woman lies dead, a Jewish prayer book in her purse. Disturbed by the bizarre circumstancesmdash;the corpse of a beautiful, well-groomed, religious victim abandoned in one of Budapest's seedier neighborhoodsmdash;Gordon is determined to unravel the mystery of her demise, especially after her shocking identity is revealed. The investigation will lead him deep into the city's dark underbellymdash;a shadow world of pornographers, crime syndicates, and Communist cellsmdash;and to the highest echelons of power, where one of Hungary's most influential executives plans to make an economic killing through his strong political ties to Germany's leaders...if he can somehow keep secret the fact that he was, at one time, Jewish.A gripping and evocative thriller, brimming with suspense and breathtaking political intrigue, Vilmos Kondor's Budapest Noir is a richly atmospheric tale of murder and betrayal from a remarkable new voice in noir detective fiction.
