1 Chapter 3: China Proper: The Household as a Complex Human Ecosystem The people can go for a hundred years without money, but they cannot starve for a single morning, thus food is the most urgent thing. Liu Tao For at least a thousand years, since the Song period, the Intensive Agricultural Zone of China Proper has supported one of the world’s highest densities of population per unit of agricultural land. Supporting this population has depended on extremely intense level of land use and a continued process of further intensification, a process that was particularly rapid in the Qing period, from 1644 to 1911. At such high levels of intensity, most natural ecological buffers against disturbance have been sacrificed for gains in productivity. This has forced people to compensate for lost ecological resilience by strengthening infrastructural and institutional buffers. But the infrastructural and institutional buffers, in turn, require intensive upkeep, and if the upkeep fails, there is not much resilience left in the system, so that disturbances easily create ecological crises, something that has happened frequently in the last two hundred years. In this chapter, I first describe the spatial structure of China Proper. I then proceed to a detailed analysis of how the household, as the smallest-scale socio-ecosystem, was organized to attempt to buffer itself against these ever-looming disasters. In doing so, I explore the idea that traditional Chinese intensive agriculture was “everyday sustainable,” in Eugene Anderson’s words, at a household scale. This sets the stage for Chapter 6, where I examine how even a society and culture organized to buffer itself against disturbances lost resilience in the face of huge socio-ecosystem changes during the Qing: population growth, increase in cultivated land, and increase in the amount of water used to irrigate that land. -

The Chapter Titles in Xiyou Ji and Honglou Meng Continuity and Discontinuity
Linking Ancient and Contemporary Continuities and Discontinuities in Chinese Literature edited by Tiziana Lippiello, Chen Yuehong 陈跃红 and Maddalena Barenghi The Chapter Titles in Xiyou ji and Honglou meng Continuity and Discontinuity Nicholas Koss (Peking University, China) Abstract This essay will first study the chapter titles in the early chapters of Xiyou ji (The Journey to the West), which will be followed by an examination of the chapter titles in the first eighty chapters of Honglou meng (Dream of the Red Chamber). The purpose of this study will be to show the continu- ity and discontinuity of the chapter titles in the final version of Xiyou ji (1592) with those in the first printed edition of Honglou meng (1791). The final part of this essay will relate some of the ideas of Gérard Genette about titles and chapter titles to the chapter titles in Honglou meng. The Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, Little Ants Kunqu Opera Art Troupe, and the Zhejiang Shaoju Opera Theatre will present a rare opportunity to experience a celebration of Chinese culture that is not to be missed. A dazzling combination of traditional and modern Chinese music, vocal artistry, costumes, and acrobatics will delight all in attendance. This is the fifth straight year that Muscatine has hosted a Chinese New Year’s concert and is, once again, made available free to the public. The PLA's literary branch helped him finish the novel and after its publication Gao and his struggle to become literate by writing a novel served as an inspiration for others striving for education. Gao Yubao was republished several times up until as late as the 1970's and each time it was republished it was revised. -

Although this pioneering work signifies an important shift in the development of narratology in China, the work has received very little attention in the West (Shang Biwu 2014: 4), and it deserves more. -

7 Transgenderism in Japanese Manga as Radical Translation The Journey to the West Goes to Japan Leo Tak-Hung Chan The subversive nature of manga is a fact widely acknowledged. Using "an expressive format that combines stylized and simplistic imagery with a laconic text," it can "lampoon, satirize, romanticize [and] reimagine the world in which people live" ( Allison 1996 : 56-57). But what if the targetof the parody is a text from another culture? A case in point involves the parodic manga versions of the Chinese classic The Journey to the West (Xiyouji; hereafter The Journey), representing a shift from a verbal to a visual medium and from a Chinese to a Japanese context. Not surprisingly, when such manga is translated back into Chinese, readers in China are offended to see their own cherished literary work tampered with, leading in 2007 to a critical attack on Japanese manga versions of a parodic nature ( Lin and Zhang 2008 : 168); official statements were issued concerning the need to curb the translation of such works in order to protect the health of Chinese culture. Much venom was directed not just at manga derived from The Journey, but on Japanese parodies in general. An article in the national newspaper Huanqiu shibao was subtitled "Why Does Japan Parodythe Classics of Other Countries?" Among the commentators (e.g., Zhu 2007 ; Lin and Zhang 2008 ), the point was stressed that a culture of egao, or 'malicious meddling,' originated in a Japanese concept that had spread to Mainland China via Taiwan and Hong Kong. As punishment for his crimes against the Heaven, Sun Wukong must take a journey to India to help the monk Tripitaka, in order to retrieve Buddhist scriptures back to China. -

Research Note Cultural Revolution Conflict in the Villages* Jonathan Unger During the “high tide” of the Cultural Revolution between 1966 and 1968, almost every urban school and work unit erupted in dissension and factionalism, very often spiralling into violence. Amidst exaggerated charges, a great many basic-level leaders were toppled from below and humiliated—or worse. In every city, so-called Rebel and Conservative factions emerged from the melee and fought each other in the streets. In the villages, in sharp contrast, there were far more divergent scenarios.1 A great many villages did not directly experience any turmoil at all during this period, whereas in some rural districts the ferocity of the violence surpassed even the urban upheavals. In some cases the violence flared up from below, as groups of villagers tried to oust the village leadership. In others, any violence that occurred was entirely orchestrated from above by local county, commune and village authorities, sometimes even in circumstances where there was no challenge to them from below. In short, the causes and incidence of violence varied considerably from village to village and the violence played itself out in quite different ways in different parts of the countryside. As shown below, this rural violence sometimes reflected animosities that were traditional, as exemplified by feuding between historically antagonistic lineages or villages. But an equally important cause of conflict lay in the animosities that had been deliberately manufactured by the Party and government in the years since Liberation. One of the purposes of this article is to delineate how the types of hostilities that were grounded in tradition and those engendered by the state intersected and played off each other in ways that extended and exacerbated conflicts. -
