Character Descriptions

Gomez Addams, High baritone (Bb2 – G4), Stage Age 35-55: An attractive man of Spanish descent, and almost always dresses in a chalk-striped, dark-coloured suit and tie, slicked-back hair and a pencil-thin moustache. He is sometimes seen in a rather formal dressing gown and loves his cigars. Gomez is passionately in love with his wife Morticia; he affectionately calls her romantic names like Querida ("darling") and Cara Mia ("my beloved"), and is driven wild by the slightest of her actions especially when she speaks French. He takes great pride in his children, and is immensely proud to be an Addams; caught between his daughter and his wife he feels completely trapped and unable to make either happy. This role needs great comedic timing, the ability to move well, and strong vocals.

Morticia Addams, Alto/Mezzo Sop. (G3 – Bb5), Stage Age 35-50: Morticia is the wife of , and the mother of Wednesday and Pugsley. She has pale skin and long hair. She commonly wears black gothic dresses to match her hair, tightly form fitting. She is beautiful, leggy, the real head of the family and the critical and moving force behind it; easy comedic actress with a sexy, dry wit; feels her husband is hiding something from her and will use any tactic to lure the secret out; a dancer.

Uncle Fester, High baritone (C3 – C5), Stage Age 30-50: Serves as the musical’s narrator; bald, rotund and child-like, with dark, sunken eyes and often a deranged smile. He is hugely enthusiastic and totally incorrigible; a vaudevillian, needs strong comedy. He always wears a heavy, full-length fur coat.

Wednesday Addams, Strong pop voice with belt (A3 – E5), 16-25 to play 18: Wednesday is a pale, dark-haired girl who is fascinated with death and the . She seldom smiles. She loves the colour black and is Gothic in a sexy way, witty with a terrifically dry sense of humor; just wants her family to be “normal” for one night to meet the parents of the boy she’s fallen in love with; strong pop belt vocals. Preferably seeking actresses 5’4 & under for this role.

Pugsley Addams, Strong high vocals (unchanged voice) 11-13 to play 12: A charming, funny, husky boy who loves being tortured by his sister; he wants to ensure he won’t lose his sister to her new boyfriend so he takes matters into his own hands; strong, high vocals. Voice not yet changed. 5’ max height requirement.

Grandma, Strong character vocals (G4 – F5) 35+ to play a feisty 102 yr. old woman: This disrespectful old hag is the mother of Gomez (well we think she is), the hair is white, frizzy and uncombed. Grandma is known for her cynical and morbid sense of humor and her recreational interest in the . Fun and quirky, but don’t mess with Grandma; comedic actress with strong character vocals. Lurch, Bass (Eb2-E4) 25-60: Seeking tall actors - the taller the better; a man of very, very few words, often spoken at half speed; most of what he utters is long, plaintive groans, some tinged with irony or exasperation; must have true low bass vocals.

Mal Beinecke, high baritone (C3-A4) Stage Age 40-55: Stuffy father of 19-year-old Lucas and exasperated husband to his rhyming wife, Alice; thinks the Addams’ are beyond strange and does not want to spend time having dinner with them, much less be related.

Alice Beinecke, soprano/high belt (Ab3- G#5), Stage Age 40-50: Mother of 19-year-old Lucas, seemingly mousy housewife who’s devoted to her family so she puts aside her own desires; while at the Addams’ family dinner party, she drinks a potion that causes her to let her hair down and speak her truth; very strong comedic singer/actress.

Lucas Beinecke, Pop Tenor (C3-C5), 18-25 to play 19: Attractive, in shape young man; fell in love with and plans to marry her; experiences the youthful pain and drama of young love and struggles with the differences between his family and the Addams family. He is (for the most part), a fairly normal person. He writes poetry and is apparently a romantic. He also has a crazy and dark side, proven during "Crazier Than You".

Ensemble - The Ancestors, SATB, 16 and older: Strong contemporary singer/dancers who sing and have a fun, quirky sensibility. Must be able to hold tight harmonies and portray recognizable historical archetypes.

Cousin Itt, non singing role for short child about 10 or 11: 's entire body is covered with hair. Although he sometimes wore opera gloves, it is unclear what, if anything, is beneath the hair. He speaks in a high pitched voice as if he was breathing Helium. People outside the Addams family can't understand him. This is a small role and is only on stage for a few scenes.

Thing T Thing, referred to as just “Thing”, non speaking role any age Thing is a disembodied hand who performs various useful functions for the family, a "handservant" if you will. Thing is used in a number of scenes. Thing customarily emerges from a series of boxes. Among Thing's many useful roles are fetching the mail and handing cigars to Gomez plus he is also fond of arm-wrestling. Morticia is always very appreciative of Thing's services, and her frequent "Why thank you, Thing" is one of the best known lines of the original series. Thing cannot talk, but he does sometimes snap his fingers to attract attention.
