The district’s configuration includes an early childhood program for Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4 and a Kindergarten and 1st Grade School. The district also boasts three Kindergarten through 6th Grade Schools, a Middle School, and a comprehensive High School. The Hoboken School District employs the Tools of the Mind curriculum for the early childhood program. All elementary, middle and high school curricula are aligned to state and national standards. Authentic literacy guides both reading and writing instruction, as students immerse themselves in both non-fiction text and literature. Science is guided by the Next Generation Science Standards, while all students in grades K-8 also participate in Project Lead the Way’s Launch and Gateway S.T.E.M. programs on a daily basis. This hands-on, inquiry-based approach ensures that students are fully engaged in learning. The mathematics program in the Hoboken Public Schools is driven by math investigations and connected math. Kindergarten through 8th Grade students participate in a daily period of challenge and support as they focus on the skills, content, and concepts that they still need to develop or extend those they have already mastered. While an identified population of gifted and talented students are serviced, all students participate in self-selected school-wide enrichment. Students also benefit from rich instruction in the areas of art, library media science, physical education, technology, and vocal and instrumental music. Hoboken High School is soaring to new heights. New programs in Biomedical Science, Engineering, and Computer Science have excited the students and have encouraged new learning. Each day, Hoboken High School students participate in a Personal Growth Period. This period enables students to take SAT Prep classes, attend lectures and seminars, participate in book groups, compete in physical competitions, visit with college and university admissions counselors, and much more. In addition to the wide array of Advance Placement courses offered during the school day, Hoboken High School students may also take on-line courses and enroll in the Pre-Medical Honors Program offered by Rutgers University. Students at Hoboken High School take great pride in being a Redwing on our athletic fields, courts, and at the bowling alley. They also put countless hours into the marking band, color guard, and choir. As our teams display N.J. State Championship banners and the Rockin’ Redwings Marching Band performs in Washington, D.C., our award winning Theater Department continuously earns medals and trophies locally, statewide, and nationally. Clubs and activities such as Harvard Model Congress prepare our students to attend the annual conference in San Francisco where they display their abilities to constructively debate and compete in a range of government simulations against students from across the nation. The Hoboken School District has infused technology throughout its curriculum. Students have access to technology in all classrooms, common spaces and media centers. Each school has computer labs and a multitude of Chromebooks, I Pads, and Android Tablets for more mobile learning. Hoboken High School just recently opened a state-of-the-art engineering and robotics lab with great capacity for 3-D printing projects, robotics, and computer assisted design. Software-based programs, as well as online learning tools are implemented in each school. The Hoboken School District is engaged in several multi-year, long term partnerships. The Stevens Institute of Technology Ducklings Program brings exciting projects to our upper elementary school students and coding clubs to our middle school students. Columbia University’s Teachers’ College puts the Students Press Initiative into Hoboken High School which unveils the writer in each of our young men and women. And, Montclair State University offers on-site graduate coursework to our teachers in the area of Educational Leadership. The goal of the Hoboken School District is to ensure equity and strive toward excellence in education. It is a dynamic place for all students to grow socially, emotionally and academically. Tier 1 students are students who are enrolled in a NJ public school in their resident school district during the time of application and for the entire year (2018-19) immediately preceding enrollment in a choice district. If a student moved during the school year and attended the resident public school of his/her old district of residence, he/she is also considered Tier 1. Choice districts must first fill their available seats with Tier 1 students. If the number of Tier 1 applications exceeds the number of choice seats available, the choice district must hold a lottery to randomly select students. Charter school students are considered to be Tier 1. To qualify as Tier 1 for kindergarten, a student must be attending a state-funded preschool in his or her resident district or a student resides in a district that does not offer a state-funded preschool program or a student has a sibling currently attending the choice district. Most students applying for kindergarten are in Tier 1. Tier 2 students include NJ residents who have not attended their resident public school for the entire year immediately prior to enrollment in the desired choice district and do not otherwise meet the requirements for Tier 1. This would include students who have been attending public school outside their districts of residence or private school. Choice districts are not obligated to accept Tier 2 students. If a choice district accepts Tier 2 applicants, they may do so only after all of the qualified Tier 1 applicants have been accepted. If the number of Tier 2 applications exceeds the number of choice seats available, the choice district must hold a Tier 2 lottery to select students. .
