Francis Center Celebrates 20 Years

Twenty years ago, a small group of children gathered around Sister Betty Neumeister’s kitchen table in Niagara Falls, New York to receive some help with their homework. From this informal beginning, Francis Center was born!

The sisters knew there was a need: Research has shown that Grade 3 is a pivotal point in learning, and that if a child is not reading at or above grade level by the end of Grade 3, their future academic success is in jeopardy. In response, the sisters eventually left their kitchen and moved their ministry to classrooms at 335 24th Street in Niagara Falls. Here, local schools refer up to 30 children from grades 2 and 3 who gather after school to get free help with their homework, math and reading from qualified teachers and volunteers.

Does Francis Center work? YES! A 2012-2013 Northwest Evaluation Asso- ciation test provided by Niagara Falls School District showed Francis Center stu- dents demonstrated a 100% improvement in math, 89% improvement in reading and 84% improvement in language usage.

Still, Francis Center is so much more… It’s a place to learn kindness and caring for one another It’s a place to develop social skills and creativity through fine arts It’s a place to experience the joy of learning and creating in a safe environment It’s a place to interact with caring, adult mentors and to build self-confidence It’s a place that provides a summer camp emphasizing academics and recreation

A celebration dinner will take place on June 8, 2017 at the Sheraton at the Falls, Niagara Falls, New York. Alumni of the program will be present to help the board of directors honor James and Mary Glynn, Maid of the Mist, Inc. and Marsha Joy Sullivan, the Joy Family Foundation for their invaluable help in growing this ministry.

If you would like to attend the gala, be a patron, and/or place an ad in the program book, please contact Sister Betty Neumeister at (716) 284-2050 or [email protected]. Information is also available online at www.franciscenter.com.

Your generosity over the years has made a difference in the lives of the Sisters of St. Francis and in the lives of those whom we serve. Whether you have supported us with your prayer, your presence and/or your resources, we have felt your oneness with us and are deeply grateful.

Henri Nouwen was an internationally renowned author, respected professor, and beloved pastor. He believed that “God’s kingdom is the place of abundance where every generous act overflows its original bounds and becomes part of the unbounded grace of God at work in the world.” By placing your energy, prayers and resources at the disposal of the kingdom “you will be enriched in every way for your great generosity,” (2Cor. 9:11) and together we will witness the grace of God at work in our world!

Sisters of St. Francis Legacy Society

By remembering the Sisters of St. Francis as you update your will, your legacy provides for the care of the elderly and infirm sisters, as well as ensuring the ministries of the sisters may continue in our time and place in history.

Just as you have supported us throughout your lifetime, your estate gift—no matter the size—will continue to educate children, feed the poor, provide medical care to the needy and transform unjust structure in our world.

This is a living legacy! Legacy Society members are embraced by the sisters through prayer, special monthly masses, and a personalized gift. Your membership may be confidential, or publicly recognized in a listing in our Chapel. It is a simple thing to do and is revocable should your circumstances change.

For information, please contact Barbara Johnson at 716-754-2193 or [email protected]. 8 Let Us Serve our Good God Together

The mission in Tanzania grows as our sisters continue to be educated in preparation to minister in health, educational and pastoral services.

Sister Marguerite Wolf has called this mission home for nearly 30 years. After a year-long visit to Stella Niagara, she returned to Tanzania in December 2016 and offered this glimpse of her life in a recent letter.

After getting myself organized, re-tooled and familiar again with names, condition of roads, meal times, monkeys running on the roof and so forth, I planned my first go around to visit all the sisters. Starting in Mahina I had an interview with each sister and novice. Then I went to Butimba and met with the sisters and visited the school and parish where they minister. From there I headed to Musoma (Kigera) (about 3-4 hours from Mwanza..on the lake) where there is a large home for elderly, orphans, and the sick.

These are pictures from the leper village near Kigera. One of the mission sisters and the young aspirants have built homes for the lepers in this village and two wells have been dug there so they are close to a water source.

My travels then continued to a place called Buseresere, where three mission “sewing sisters” who teach catechism and make habits and so forth, reside. Then I went to a place called Buziku…(said like it is spelled as there are no special vowels in Kiswahili.) There we have a small kindergarten and sisters teaching catechism and working in parish and outstation ministry.

The sisters are raising hogs on the farm at Buseresere and now can butcher their own pork, chickens and ducks. S. Margie with Thomas in the new house, and S. Edina with Thomas—a young boy the sisters are caring for now.

My next stop was to a place called Rukalagata where we have two sisters teaching: one in the government school and one in the catholic girls’ secondary school. Then in the same parish I went to Biharamulo where “it all started.” There the sisters are farming, working in the hospital (in the footprints of our Dutch Sisters) as well as working with the Franciscan youth. About 15 minutes away is Katoke Parish where we have more sisters doing farming, secretarial and teaching work in the seminary. We also have a special ministry with the leper village. Soon I was back on the road again to Kemondo and the home for disabled children, where some of the sisters are caring and cooking for the children. We also have other sisters teaching in neighboring primary and kindergarten schools. Finally I visited Bukoba (another beginning place in 1959) where three sisters are studying for their secondary education—not easy as they are in their 30’s! There are another 5 sisters who are studying in the university, nursing college and hospital, and one more sister who is teaching catechism in 5 schools! And I saw them all! The Changing Face of Church With God in Another Way Ann McDermott, osf

Wash away our fears; strengthen our courage; clear our vision so that we may help bring about your kin-dom of love and peace.

Free us from the attraction of hurting others for our own entertainment. Make name-calling and derogatory nicknames disappear from our vocabulary. Put an end to jokes, slurs, cartoons and other “funny” ways of hurting people.

Help us to see all others with eyes of love and compassion, so that inner healing and hope will bring new life to our wounded world. Make acceptance and love an advantage experienced by all peoples.

We ask for forgiveness and mercy for the times we didn’t see with love or act with compassion. We pray for real unity and universal love among peoples and nations.
