For Your Information Faith First Faith First is the catechetical program adopted by the Archdiocese of Montreal for the teaching of our faith to our children. All youngsters in primary school should be participating in this program. That is especially true for children who plan to make their First Communion or be confirmed. Our next meeting is on Tuesday, Feb. 1st from 7 – 8 pm. First Communion Parents who would like their child(ren) to receive their 1st Communion on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (June 26) are asked to register their child(ren) before February 15th. Children should be at least 6 years old and participating in our Faith First program. Confirmation Children in grade 5 or over and who are interested in being confirmed at St. Edward’s in the autumn are asked to register with Fr. Ernie by Feb. 15th. They should also be participating in our Faith First program. Kairos is an organization established by a number of Canadian Christian churches, including the Roman Catholic and United churches. Its goal is to help Canadian Christians to respond to social and economic issues on both the national and international levels. This Lent St. John’s and St. Edward’s will sponsor a Kairos program in support of indigenous peoples around the world. It will be held on five consecutive Wednesday evenings from March 16th to April 13th. We will have guest speakers on at least four of the five nights. We invite you to sign up as soon as you can so as to give us sufficient time to obtain booklets - $5.00. For further information check the Kairos web-site. Passion Play For 18 successive years the youth of St. Edward’s and St. John’s have presented a passion play on Good Friday evening. We now are inviting young people in high school and older to sign up for this year’s presentation on April 22nd. The first gathering is this Sunday evening. Choirs We could really use new members in both our choirs. Our 5 pm choir has been reduced in numbers to the point where it might have to fold. It practices a half hour before the Saturday Mass, while the 9am choir practices about 30 minutes before and after the Sunday Mass. R.I.P. Dom Samuel Ruiz Back in 1982, St. Edward’s was graced by the visit of Dom Samuel Ruiz, the bishop of San Bartolomé de las Casas diocese in southern Mexico. It was during the time when thousands upon thousands of indigenous Guatemalans were fleeing massacres in their native land and seeking refuge among their fellow indigenous people in Chiapas, Mexico. Dom Samuel and his pastoral team rose to the occasion and moved mountains to see that these refugees were welcomed. Dom Samuel was a revered bishop in the line of Archbishop Romero of El Salvador and Dom Helder Camara of Recife, Brazil, always standing with the poor and marginalized. Like his brother bishops, he truly lived “the option for the poor,” that contribution of the Latin American Church to the definition of the global Church’s mission. This weekend, the poor of Mexico and Latin America are both mourning the death of their beloved bishop and brother and celebrating the life of a saint. Dom Samuel, we salute you. Fr. Ernie .
