Abstract The role of bass in band or ensemble music literally sets up the foundation of harmony, which must be regarded first. On the other hand, this is also considered so basic or stable that it can be slightly boring to the listeners. Consideration is needed to make the varied trials more exciting. In this sense, Rutger Gunnarsson showed these fine examples not in performing music but in pop music through the Great ABBA. He could make a fabulous sound with only a basic performance, not with a florid technique or rhetorical skills. All bassists must bear in mind that the overall performance depends on the bass.

  • Excerpt from 1974 Chapter
the complete recording sessions 1974 16 September GlenStudio. Recording ‘Stop And Listen To Your Heart’ (working title of ‘Bang-A-Boomerang’); ‘Dixie’ (working title of ‘Here Comes Rubie Jamie’, a working title of ‘Terra del Fuego’). Benny Andersson (keyboards), Janne Schaffer (guitar), Rutger Gunnarsson (bass), Roger Palm (drums). ABBA’S LEVEL OF AMBITION had truly increased with the recording of their third album, as today’s session would prove. Since the group began recording together as a pop band in 1972, save for one or two re-recorded backing tracks, they had never been able to scrap songs they felt weren’t up to scratch. For instance, had there been more time and money available, a song like ‘Watch Out’ probably wouldn’t have made it onto the Waterloo album – as it was they couldn’t afford not to use certain recordings they felt were below par. But after the global and domestic triumph of ‘Waterloo’, the situation was different. For one thing, with success came added confidence and ambition: if people really like what we’re doing, the group now seemed to reason, we should put everything we have into our songwriting and recording, offering an even better product, and not give up until everything is just so. And the commer- cial rewards also brought with them the financial possibilities to spend more time in the studio, which was necessary if they were to achieve those goals; for all its shortcomings, GlenStudio was available to them for extended peri- ods of time, and however much they may have preferred Metronome Studio, and whether or not they could afford to buy more studio hours, they could only be certain of one day per week there.

  • 17 January Metronome Studio. Mixing 'Ring Ring (Klocklåt)'
the complete recording sessions 1973 10 January Metronome Studio. Recording ‘Ring Ring’. 17 January Metronome Studio. Mixing ‘Ring Ring (Klocklåt)’; ‘Ring Ring (Zedaka)’. Benny Andersson (keyboards), Janne Schaffer (guitar), Rutger Gunnarsson (bass), Ola Brunkert (drums). FOR THE 1973 EDITION of Melodifestivalen, the Swedish selection for the Euro- vision Song Contest, Sveriges Radio (the equivalent of Great Britain’s BBC) decided that only professional composers would be invited to contribute songs. In order to decide on a suitable list of song writers, they asked a number of record industry people to make a list of ten songwriters or songwriting teams each, whom they thought would be able to come up with a competitive tune. Among those finally chosen were the team of Björn, Benny and Stig Anderson; they had proved their viability by finishing third with ‘Säj det med en sång’ (“Say It With A Song”) as performed by Lena Andersson in the 1972 Melodifes- tivalen, a song that was by far the biggest hit of all the entries that year. Their participation was announced by the newspapers in November 1972, and, in late December, it was reported that Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid would per- form the Andersson/Anderson/Ulvaeus contribution. It was a perfect opportunity: not only would they gain exposure on prime-time television in their home-country, but if they won the selection they would get a chance to perform their song in front of hundreds of millions of viewers all over Europe. Indeed, after the past few years’ largely fruitless attempts at getting Björn and Benny’s music heard abroad, Stig Anderson had concluded that Euro- vision would be their best bet for making an international impact.
