  • THE GEOGRAPHY of GALATIA Gal 1:2; Act 18:23; 1 Cor 16:1
CHAPTER 38 THE GEOGRAPHY OF GALATIA Gal 1:2; Act 18:23; 1 Cor 16:1 Mark Wilson KEY POINTS • Galatia is both a region and a province in central Asia Minor. • The main cities of north Galatia were settled by the Gauls in the third cen- tury bc. • The main cities of south Galatia were founded by the Greeks starting in the third century bc. • Galatia became a Roman province in 25 bc, and the Romans established colonies in many of its cities. • Pamphylia was part of Galatia in Paul’s day, so Perga and Attalia were cities in south Galatia. GALATIA AS A REGION and their families who migrated from Galatia is located in a basin in north-cen- Thrace in 278 bc. They had been invited tral Asia Minor that is largely flat and by Nicomedes I of Bithynia to serve as treeless. Within it are the headwaters of mercenaries in his army. The Galatians the Sangarius River (mode rn Sakarya) were notorious for their destructive and the middle course of the Halys River forays, and in 241 bc the Pergamenes led (modern Kızılırmak). The capital of the by Attalus I defeated them at the battle Hittite Empire—Hattusha (modern of the Caicus. • The Expansion of Christianity in Lycaonian Cities and Villages
Please provide footnote text CHAPTER 4 The Expansion of Christianity in Lycaonian Cities and Villages 4.1 Introduction The following survey of Christian inscriptions from Lycaonia and the adjacent region around Isaura and the lake region of eastern Pisidia forms the backbone of this study on the rise of early Christianity in Lycaonia. In each subsection of this chapter evidence attesting the presence of Christians in the cities and vil- lages of Lycaonia and adjacent areas is discussed and indicated on the accom- panying maps.1 In the selection of the material the authors decided to quote the full text of inscriptions that cannot with certainty be identified as Christian only by exception. Some of these inscriptions might well be Christian too. The documentation of “The Expansion of the Christian Religion” into Pisidia, Lycaonia and Isauria by Harnack in his Mission und Ausbreitung des Christentums includes only a few inscriptions and does not go beyond to AD 325.2 We expand his brief geographically orientated list of locations in which Christianity set foot into a full presentation of the available evidence. This survey shows how habitable space in Lycaonia and adjacent areas gradu- ally became Christianised. By the 5th century the church gained control over a vast area through the mechanism of bishops ruling the cities and their ter- ritories. The survey is organised around the major cities and their regions, starting with a brief description of the location and overviews of the ancient testimonies to Christianity referring to the city or its territory. Apart from the Lycaonian locations of Paul’s mission mentioned (Iconium, Lystra and Derbe) or implied (Laodicea Combusta) in the Acts of the Apostles, which “cities” or villages should be included under “Lycaonian and adjacent areas”?3 For Strabo the easternmost town of Lycaonia was Coropassus, a fortified outpost (φρούριον).

  • Why Derbe? an Unlikely Lycaonian City for Paul’S Ministry
Tyndale Bulletin 70.1 (2019) 55-84 WHY DERBE? AN UNLIKELY LYCAONIAN CITY FOR PAUL’S MINISTRY Bob Wagner and Mark Wilson ([email protected] / [email protected]) Summary This article discusses Paul’s visit to Derbe contextually within the first journey as well as his subsequent visits to this minor Lycaonian city. It reviews the difficulty of earlier travellers and scholars such as Davis, Sterrett, and Ramsay to localise the site. The discovery of two inscriptions naming Derbe have more precisely situated the site, yet some ambiguity remains. Paul’s projected routes between Lystra and Derbe as presented in maps and atlases are reviewed. The authors’ autopsy of this area provides fresh insights into Paul’s route between the two cities. The article closes with a suggested reason why Paul visited Derbe on his first journey and thereby founded a community of believers there. 1. Historical Background Derbe was an unlikely city to be evangelised by Paul, for it was a minor settlement on a spur of the Southern Highway and apparently without a Jewish community. Derbe begins to feature in Greco-Roman history in the first century BC through the writings of various Greek and Latin authors. Located in southern Lycaonia (Fig. 1), the region was attached to the Attalid kingdom after the Treaty of Apamea (188 BC), then to the province of Asia after its founding in 129 BC, and finally to the province of Cilicia in the mid-first century BC.1 Whether the territory of Isauria included Derbe has been debated. Derbe was the 1 Sviatoslav Dmitriev, ‘Observations on the Historical Geography of Roman Lycaonia’, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Studies 41 (2000): 349.

  • Map 66 Taurus Compiled by S. Mitchell, 1995
Map 66 Taurus Compiled by S. Mitchell, 1995 Introduction The map covers three distinctive geographical areas. In the north is the steppic basin of Lycaonia and south-west Cappadocia. The rivers here drain towards the interior of the country and end in the shallow lakes and salty marshes of central Anatolia. To the south comes the semicircular sweep of the Taurus mountains, the ancient territory of Isauria and Cilicia Tracheia (“rugged”). The mountains are divided up by the deeply cut river-systems of the Calycadnus in the west, and by the Cydnus and (P)Saros in the east. The third area is the western half of Cilicia Pedias (“plain”), as far as the outlet of the R. Pyramos. In modern times elaborate dam and canalization schemes have been developed for the irrigation of the Lycaonian steppe south of Iconium and of Cilicia Pedias between the (P)Saros and Pyramos. These may have had predecessors in antiquity, but there is no reliable archaeological documentation for such systems. Deposits at the river mouths in Cilicia Pedias have pushed the modern coastline forward by as much as four miles in some locations, and the outlets of both the (P)Saros and Pyramos have altered substantially since the Roman period (see Map 67 Introduction). Relatively systematic information for the coastal topography of the region is available from the shipping manuals of coastal landmarks. These mainly comprise the work attributed to Scylax, which in its present form dates to the 330s B.C. (GGM I, xliii-xlv), an account in Strabo Book 14, and the StadMM compiled in the third or fourth century A.D., but drawing in part on the same sources as Strabo.
