Store Steers to £1455 Heifers to £1250

An excellent day in the cattle pens with a quality line up in store cattle section and although demand was as strong as ever there were signs of some cattle starting to look a little weather beaten. Steers reached an impressive £1375 given for a trio of tremendous Blonde bullocks (23m) from Brian Davis of Liskeard with a pen of four with similar comments from Brian reaching £1295. Quality bred and fed Aberdeen Angus cattle sold well and to £1320 (22m) for Charlie Serpell of Sparkwell, with other Angus steers (23m) also decent money at £1165 for Chris and Sue Popham of Taunton. Best of the South steers came from Steve Mann of Ilsington who saw his bunches to £1210 and £1200 (25m) whilst Mark Martyn of Boyton saw his younger (18m) South Devon steer rise to £1155. Limousin steers (28m) ran to £1200 for Nick Toms of closely followed by ones at £1190 (22m) from David Vallance of and smart younger (16m) sorts at £1160 for Tom and Sarah Fry of also £1155 for Chris and Kate Stephens of . A super bunch of four Beef Shorthorn steers (23m) drew £1160 for Charlie Serpell and British Blue bullocks (21m) saw £1135 and £1130 for Chris and Sue Popham and Dan Vallance respectively. Yearling store steers ran to £1065 for a cracking Hereford from Ian Balsdon and family of with a trio of neat Limousin’s from Mark Martyn fetched £1020 a head. As with the steers the heifer section was headed by Brian Davis with another pen of glorious Blonde’s (25m) with eased to a massive £1285 with South Devon females (23m) not far behind at £1230 and £1190 for Raymond Brown of Woodbury. A grand British Blue heifer (24m) from Richard Ellis of also saw £1190 whilst Aberdeen Angus sold for £1185 for Steve Mann and £1115 for John Searle of . A pair of meaty Charolais heifers from Crispin Sobey, (26m) made £1130 apiece and smart Limousin heifers (only 17m) reached £1100 for Andrew and James Dunn of Helston. John Searle saw a couple of Hereford females (25m) make £1025 each whilst Later born heifers of note included a pen of three well bred South Devon’s at £960 for Dan Gould of Taunton.

Friday saw stirk steers top at £775 for a smashing bunch of eight young Charolais suckler bred sorts from J Smerdon and

Co of Ivybridge whilst pens of decent beef bred Hereford bullocks (10m) from EL Smith & Sons of Bridport made to £685.

Five smart Devon cross steer calves (10m) fetched £620 apiece for Richard Hill of Dunsford with smaller Angus steers (10m) from Paul Belworthy of Exeter sold at £550. A bunch of six Charolais heifers (10m) topped that section at £665 a life for J Smerdon and Co with a trio with similar comments close at £660 from the same sellers. A pair of smart red Limousin heifers (8m) from Leo and Janette Bradford of sold for £660 a life followed by a single Simmental heifer (10m) at £590 for J Smerdon and Co again. Hereford heifer stirks (10m) ran to £545 for EL Smith and Son and Aberdeen Angus (10m) drew £460 for Paul Belworthy.

A stronger entry of Calves sold to an excellent CALVES - 10.15 am trade. There were several older sorts forward Auctioneer: - Mark Davis – 07773371774 which sold to a fierce trade topping at £550 for a CALVES Bulls Heifers super 14 week old South Devon bull from Edward Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE Hawkins of Taunton who sold other younger sorts British Blue 32 500 376 16 460 212 to £470 & £430. Andrew & Liz Hammett of sold a batch of 18 weaned 10-12 week Limousin 1 245 245 old British Blue steer calves to an absolute flying Aberdeen Angus 10 182 115 29 390 196 trade topping at £500 x 6 with another 12 very Hereford 4 202 158 3 175 120 close behind at £490! Well done to the Hammetts! South Devon 3 550 483 Younger calves were a strong trade for the best Holstein / Friesian 9 65 40 topping at £432 for a super young Blue bull from Mr DW Rowe of Axminster with others to £340 for Ashley & Jess Bond. There were several plainer younger calves which were just a touch harder to place. Only a handful of decent natives forward which saw the best Herefords to £202 for Chris Hall of Dorset. Heifers topped at £460 for a weaned British Blue heifer from Kathryn Starr of Dunkeswell with younger sorts to £290, £245 & £230 for Ashley & Jess Bond. A consignment of 12 Aberdeen Angus heifers topped at £390 x 6 with another 6 at £360 for Andrew & Liz Hammett.

136 Beef Breeding Sale Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774

A cracking entry for our Monthly Catalogued Beef Breeding Sale saw some excellent quality consignments forward. Trade of day was for a super consignment of pedigree Hereford cows & calves from Messrs PH & M Bradley of the Isle of Wight which topped the day at £2000 for a 2015 born cow with her March born heifer calf. Other similar outfits to £1750 for a 2016 born cow with her February born steer calf. An outstanding consignment of Pedigree South Devon cows with calves at foot from David Walters of Broadhembury sold to a top of £1820 for a 2016 born cow “Broadhembury Mutterton Ann 23” with her April born heifer calf by Goffe Cave Hagler. Another identical outfit sold at £1820 with others to £1680 & £1550. Pedigree Simmental cows & calves sold to £1310 for a 2007 born cow with her June born heifer calf from Sue Wayland of Whitstone who also sold a 2006 born cow with a June born heifer calf at £1280. Commercial cows & calves saw the dispersal sale on behalf of Nigel Baverstock of Doddiscombeleigh top the trade at £1600 for a 2015 born Charolais x cow with her April born Limousin steer calf at foot. A 2013 born Limousin x cow sold with her steer calf at £1560 whilst another 2015 born Charolais x cow sold with a June born steer calf at £1500. Close behind at £1480 was a 2013 born Devon x cow with her steer calf. Mr Baverstock’s consignment averaged an excellent £1420 which was well ahead of his expectation. The best of a consignment of Aberdeen Angus cows from Messrs H & M Retallick of topped at £980 for a 2016 born cow with her young heifer calf at foot. A selection of bulls met a more selective trade however only one failed to find a new home! Top of the day was £1780 for the much admired 2014 born Blonde Bull from Mr RL Davis & Son of Liskeard who also topped the store cattle sections with a group of his sons at £1375! A young Aberdeen Angus bull sold well at £1550 for Messrs J & M Widdicombe of Avonwick. Simmental bulls to £1500 for Paul Rowden of and Limousin bulls to £1420 & £1400 for Messrs SC Voysey of Exeter. In summary an excellent entry which saw fantastic demand throughout!

42 Cull Sows

A nice entry saw the trade a little easier with two buyers not competing due to slow export sales. Best sows came in from Richard Knox of Whiddon Down reaching £105 going off to Staffordshire, with Andrew Freemantle close up at £95. Down Farms of hit £92 for the best of their run.

74 Prime Pigs

A good entry and what a trade! Ten buyers competed well with the best in from Tor View Farming at £175 (x2) with others from Chris Down at £172 & Rob Overnell of Torrington at £158. Chris Hill of Wellington saw his best at £120 whilst a cracking run of 85kg prime pigs from Messrs Jose of Launceston topped at an impressive £119. Richard and Vicky Gibbins of saw their best reaching £111 with the top 20 prime pigs on the day averaging an amazing £156.30 being a new record for our time at Exeter Market.

1235 STORE LAMBS

A smaller entry of sheep consisted of just 1235 store lambs that despite the slipping prime trade were just as dear as previous weeks with more buyers in attendance. Top money of £95.50 went to Paul Bowden of Drewsteignton followed by Dave & Vicky Lawrence of Ottery St Mary at £91.50 and Toby Hull of Holcombe Rogus achieved £88.50. Plenty of short term lambs still keenly sought after from £72 to £83 with medium to long term keepers £63 to £71 and smaller and harder hill bred lambs £30 to £55 to give an average of £65.61, back just 28p on last week.

79 GRAZING EWES & WETHERS

Grazers sold to £84 for a strong wether from Andy Romans of Dorchester, £78 for a pen of ewes from Phillip Smith of Luppitt who also had wethers at £75.50 as Lovaton Farm Partners of South Tawton achieved £77.50 of their best pen of Lleyn ewes. Yet more wethers at £73.50 for Susan Jozsa of and £67 for Laura Ferrett of Bridport.

74 BREEDING SHEEP & 1 EWE & 2 LAMBS

A very late born FM Mule double couple realised £140 for Neil & Kate Lethbridge of and commercial breeding ewes sold to £106 & £96 for Jacob x Dorset’s from Helen Fuller of Simonsbath as Matt Williams of Ottery St Mary made £96 of Suffolk crosses and three lots sold between £90 & £92.

64 ZWARTBLES SHEEP

The annual sale of Zwartbles sheep saw a top for females of 360gns going to Jethro Kimber of Merton who had other shearling ewes at 280gns and 200gns twice. Michelle Northmore of sold aged ewes at 180gns thrice and 160gns as the Browne’s of had ewe lambs at 180gns and Jason Kestell of Launceston had similar at 160gns with plenty of other nice ewe lambs and aged ewes from 100 to 140gns. Shearling rams sold to 260gns for A Coombs of Radstock as Barry Mills of Cheddar achieved the same money with a ram lamb and P & J Ley of made 200gns of an aged ram with other lambs and aged tups selling from 150-180gns. A selection of cross bred ewe lambs were well received and topped at £110 for a trio of Beltex’s from Barry Mills.
