Page 2 THE ZION TRUMPET Turn Toward Love

“Dear friends, let us love another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” 1 John 4:7-8

When we turn from God, we turn away from the ultimate source of all love. Among the reli- gions of the world, Christianity alone says that love is not just something God does. It is what He is. God is love (1 John 4:8), and to turn from Him is to turn away from the One who holds together all things. As a society becomes more secular, it inevitably becomes more violent and more alienated from itself. This may not be easy for many to see, but there is massive data to support it. The gel that binds things together is gone.

Biblically, love is caring more for another than we do for ourselves. It is love that continues even when it is not reciprocated. It is sacrificial love, extended even to ene- mies. And that love comes only from God. I am not speaking here about religion; religion can be as disrup- tive as any other force in life. I am speaking about God, who revealed Himself in Jesus Christ and enabled Christ to love in such a way that He could pray for the men who crucified Him: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). When we turn our face from God, we turn our face from love.

Today when you hear the voice of love, turn toward Him.

She attended un- dergraduate school in Washington and then Howard University where she studied design, printmaking and drawing, earning a BS cum laude in 1935. She then worked as a high school teacher in North Carolina but left after two years, frustrated by the low teaching salaries for black people. While living and working in Harlem, New York, she was briefly married to Charles White. In 1947, she married Mexican artist, Francis- co Mora, and made Mexico her permanent home, later becoming a Mexican citizen. They have three sons, including film director Juan Mora. Her granddaughter, Naima Mora, was the Cycle 4 winner of the America's Next Top Model television show. Catlett's sculpture, "Naima", is of Nai- ma as a child.

Since retiring in 1975, she continues to be active in the Cuernavaca, Mexico art community.

VOLUME 3, ISSUE 3 Page 13 Who's in the Church?

T'was the Sunday before Christmas when all through the Church, not a spirit was stirring not even a mouse, the children were called to come down to the front, for a story of the season was about to be told. When all of a sudden coming from the Pulpit was a jolly, Rev. Santa Claus (Pastor Williams). The children cheered with excitement because over his shoulder was a bag filled with toys. Not a child was left out be- cause Rev. Santa knew all his children, and they all had been good this whole year through. The story was told of the birth of Baby Jesus for all who listened.

Thanks to the December Team, Sisters Patricia Landers, Monica Pickens and Barbara Smith who also kept with the story of the Season and why we cele- brate Christmas.

Hoping everyone had a Merry Christmas and Hoping all will have a Blessed New Year.

Growing in Giving Impacts Our World

Scriptures instruct us that as we grow in the grace of giving when we “Honor the Lord with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase” (Proverbs 3:9, KJV). We are told “Upon the first day of the week, let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him…” (1 Corinthians 16:2, KJV). This is a sure-fire way to impact our world.

When we grow in our giving, we positively impact both our world and Church through missions and evangelism, allow- ing the global Church to expand and grow. Through a dynamic program of teaching and proper Christian stewardship, we could develop new ministries, add seed into others, plant new churches, and increase our presence in communities.

Training our members to grow in grace inspires them to realize that their lives count in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20, KJV). When we grow in giving, it impacts our faith, our world today, and future generations.

Growing in giving not only impacts our world and the Christian Church but also impacts our local churches. Growing in giving enables churches to meet the needs of members, as well as those of people who cross our paths outside our church walls. As an example, our growing in giving al- lows the Board of Christian Education to have monies to plan for an exciting Vacation Bible School that reaches out to unchurched children in the community. It also provides for nursery supplies, classroom materials, literature, and pays for various special events for our children and preschool- ers. It enables the Young Peoples Department and Youth Ministries to reach this generation for Christ through camps, mission trips, and a strong life-changing Church School. Financial support is important as it provides a firm foundation for a growing student ministry.

Growing in giving provides for a comfortable worship service setting and quality educational space for all ages. It provides a worship atmosphere that brings families together to praise God.

Finally, growing in giving provides the necessary financial base to maintain and support the many growing ministries of the church, such as visitation and nursing home ministries, benevolence, and special events.

Happy New Year!

The Board of Trustees take your safety while you are enjoying worship and attending meetings very seriously. The men of Greater Mt. Zion are patrolling the parking lot in lime green shirts anytime the Church is open. But we still would like for you to take these safety tips with you to use at Church and beyond:

 Have your keys in your hand before reaching your vehicle so you are not searching for them while you walk.  Keep your vehicle key separate from other keys, at- tach a whistle with this key.  As you approach your car, look under and around it. Before getting in your car, look in the back seat and on the floor.  Walk to your vehicle in pairs or in a group. If you are in the building at night and your group has left, please wait until you see one of the men patrolling the parking lot and have them walk you to your car.  When you enter your vehicle, lock all the doors and turn on your headlights. This will allow you to see anyone outside in the dark.  Start the vehicle and drive to another location that is well lit before making any necessary phone calls. Limit the amount of time you sit idle in the car.  If you feel that you are being followed, walk or run quickly to a lighted store or where crowds of people can offer help if needed. Know where to go for help—police station, fire house, etc. Do not go home.  Do anything you can to draw attention. Don’t be embarrassed. Scream, yell or blow your whistle. Honk the car horn.  If you carry a purse, don’t dangle it by your side so that a thief can run by you and grab it. Carry your purse close to your body, preferably in front.  Keep your car in good mechanical condition to prevent car trouble. Keep the tank filled with sufficient gas.  Avoid carrying large sums of money and unnecessary credit cards. Consider keeping ten or fifteen dollars in your wallet or purse to throw to the group to initiate an escape.

We hope these tips help you.

Thank you, Brother Kelvin Davis, Vice-Chairperson
