Smile Minute Earth Science Class The teacher of the earth science class, Miss Merc, was lecturing on map read- ing. After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees and minutes, the teacher asked, “Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude?” After a confused silence, a voice volunteered, “I guess you’d be eating alone.”

Answer: In Colossians 4:6, Paul tells us that our speech should be tempered with grace and seasoned with salt. Let’s all remember this.

Page 2 THE ZION TRUMPET The Seekers of Truth

“”After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship him.’” Matthew 2:1-2

I am glad that the wise men are included in the story of Jesus’ birth. They legitimize for all ages those souls who seek for the truth. Those few who are looking for truth are actually seek- ing the True One. There is something within each heart that cries out for the key to all reality. One day, a great musician sat down at the organ, weary and ill at ease. His fingers wandered idly over the keys, and as he played, he hit a chord, a chord so wonderful that for him all of the perplexity of life was bound together and understood in one complete moment. He later said, “I have spent the rest of my life trying to find that chord again!” The human heart longs for the key, and somehow or other we know that the key cannot be found in ourselves. Christ must be the center. He is the Truth. When hungry hearts come to Jesus, they will not simply find truth, they will find the Truth for all existence. He is the one chord that makes sense out of all the music of reality. He brings all the notes together and causes life to make sense and even to be beautiful. When the wise men found the One for whom they sought, they worshipped Him, falling on their knees and presenting Him with gifts. The response of all seekers of truth who find Him will be worship and adoration.

While a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, during the early 1960s, he helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). He was the first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center. Bond was elected to both houses of the Georgia legisla- ture, where he served a total of 20 years. He was chairman of the Na- tional Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1998 to 2010.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Bond taught at several universities in major cities of the North and South, including American, Drexel, Harvard, and the University of Virginia. He continues to write and lecture about the history of the civil rights movement and the condition of African Americans and the poor. He is President Emeritus of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Page 4 THE ZION TRUMPET That First Day of Christmas

There were no Christmas stockings hung on that first Christmas day. Just a lonely manger and a lowly bed of hay.

There was no jovial Santa Claus with toys and gifts galore. But shepherds came from out of fields to worship and adore.

There was no Christmas tree that day bedecked with tinsel bright, But in the East there was a star that dazzled with its light.

There was no Christmas carolers to serenade with song, But hosts of angels gathered ‘round to watch the whole night long.

No fast last-minute shopping and no Christmas cards to send, But hope was born in one small Child for new life without end!

“and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us…” John 1:14 KJV

Page 6 THE ZION TRUMPET “The 12 Days of Christmas”

When most people hear of “The 12 days of Christmas” they think of the song. This song had its origins as a teaching tool to instruct young people in the mean- ing and content of the Christian faith. From 1558 to 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not able to practice their faith openly so they had to find other ways to pass on their beliefs. This song is one example of how they did it, it is in a sense an allegory. Each of the items in the song represents something of reli- gious significance. The hidden meaning of each gift was designed to help young Christians learn their faith.  “On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me…” The “true love” rep- resents God and the “me” is the Christian (you).  “partridge in a pear tree” refers to Jesus Christ who died on a tree as a gift from God.  “two turtle doves” were the Old and New Testaments  “three French hens” were Faith, Hope and Love—the three gifts of the Spirit that abide (1 Corinthians 13).  “four calling birds” refers to the Four Gospels which sing the song of salvation through Jesus Christ.  “five golden rings” refers to the first Five Books of the Old Testa- ment, the “Pentateuch” (also called the “Book of Moses”).  “six geese a-laying” were the six days of creation.  “seven swans a swimming” were the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments (1 Corinthians 12:8-11, Romans 12, Ephesians 4, 1 Peter 4:10-11).  “eight maids a milking” refers to the eight beatitudes.  “nine ladies dancing” were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).  “ten lords a-leaping” were the Ten Commandments.  “eleven pipers piping” were the eleven faithful disciples.  “twelve drummers drumming” were the twelve points of doc- trine in the Apostles’ Creed.

VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Page 13 The theme for November was Thanksgiving with the lessons being centered on giving thanks. Psalm 95:2 says “Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms.” Lessons included a salute to our veterans by using toy soldiers showing how they protect our country. Another lesson reminded us that God can erase (just like an eraser) all of our mistakes and we can start over. We can hold a water bottle and remember we are forever filled with the Word of God and His spirit. The November Team posed a very important question to the children. Why is Thanksgiving important? Many answers were given, they were thankful for parents, school, Pastor, food, housing and even Church. Activities for the month: making of turkeys from pine cones and their own hands and horn of plenty from construction paper. There was a lot of enjoyment in Youth Church this month. Ending on a high note with the youth singing ‘No hiding place down here’. Sister Rhonda Ryan of the Steward Board, gave the Children a taste of what is to come in December. Yes, of course Christmas, but the real Sea- son: Advent which is the coming of Christ. Each Sunday there will be a present to open as she tells of this Season, Children are you ready? VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Page 17 Trustee News

Holiday time is here and the Trustee Board would like for you to use this information to be safe during this Season. Keeping Your Home Safe  Avoid displaying gifts where they can be seen from a window or doorway.  Arrange to have packages delivered to a neighbor if you’re not home to receive them; pack- ages left on porches or doorsteps are “easy picking” for thieves.  Consider simple outside decorations. Elaborate or large lawn pieces are often stolen right out of the lawn.  Be sue not to obscure the view from your windows. You need a clear view of your property.  Always lock your home’s doors and windows, even if you’re only gone for a few minutes.  Compact or dispose of packaging discreetly. Often criminals will spot something you’ve dis- carded and can target you for their next burglary or theft.  When leaving town, have a trusted friend or neighbor take care of your home.  Notify your local police precinct when you’re planning an extended absence. They can issue a vacation watch or directed patrol for your home.

Staying Safe While Shopping  Always lock your car and close the windows, even if you’re only gone a few moments. When possible, lock all merchandise or packages in the trunk of your car.  Shop with at least one partner. Have your car or house key in your hand as you approach the door. If attacked, use those keys as weapons!  Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse under your arm. Keep wallets in an inside pocket.  Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.  Park in well-lighted areas that will be well-lighted when you return.

Keeping Your Credit and Identity Safe  If you write checks, use only the necessary information, name, address, phone number. Never give your social security number.  Safeguard your credit cards and checks as you do cash. Do not leave them in jacket pockets or sitting out in restaurants, stores or hotel rooms.  Keep your purse or wallet on you. Shoulder straps should cross your body, not dangling from your shoulder. Do not lay them in shopping baskets. Be sure they are closed securely.  Make a list of all your credit cards, debit cards and checks with account numbers. Keep the list in a secure place at home. Notify issuers immediately if your card is lost or stolen.  Take your time when making a purchase. Be sure you collect your license, credit card or check book and your receipt.  Keep your receipts and reconcile your statement. Promptly report any discrepancies to the issuer.

ABOVE ALL, IF YOU ARE VICTIMIZED, REPORT IT TO THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY!
