After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees and minutes, the teacher asked, “Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude?” After a confused silence, a voice volunteered, “I guess you’d be eating alone.” Answer: In Colossians 4:6, Paul tells us that our speech should be tempered with grace and seasoned with salt. Page 2 THE ZION TRUMPET The Seekers of Truth “”After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship him.’” Matthew 2:1-2 I am glad that the wise men are included in the story of Jesus’ birth. They legitimize for all ages those souls who seek for the truth. Those few who are looking for truth are actually seek- ing the True One. There is something within each heart that cries out for the key to all reality. One day, a great musician sat down at the organ, weary and ill at ease. His fingers wandered idly over the keys, and as he played, he hit a chord, a chord so wonderful that for him all of the perplexity of life was bound together and understood in one complete moment. He later said, “I have spent the rest of my life trying to find that chord again!” The human heart longs for the key, and somehow or other we know that the key cannot be found in ourselves. Christ must be the center. He is the Truth. When hungry hearts come to Jesus, they will not simply find truth, they will find the Truth for all existence. He is the one chord that makes sense out of all the music of reality. He brings all the notes together and causes life to make sense and even to be beautiful. When the wise men found the One for whom they sought, they worshipped Him, falling on their knees and presenting Him with gifts. The response of all seekers of truth who find Him will be worship and adoration. Page 4 THE ZION TRUMPET That First Day of Christmas There were no Christmas stockings hung on that first Christmas day. Just a lonely manger and a lowly bed of hay. There was no jovial Santa Claus with toys and gifts galore. But shepherds came from out of fields to worship and adore. There was no Christmas tree that day bedecked with tinsel bright, But in the East there was a star that dazzled with its light. There was no Christmas carolers to serenade with song, But hosts of angels gathered ‘round to watch the whole night long. No fast last-minute shopping and no Christmas cards to send, But hope was born in one small Child for new life without end! “and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us…” John 1:14 KJV -Connie Hinnen Cook Thank you to the following individuals who contributed to our Church sign and building since our November printing of the Newslet- ter.. This song had its origins as a teaching tool to instruct young people in the mean- ing and content of the Christian faith. From 1558 to 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not able to practice their faith openly so they had to find other ways to pass on their beliefs. This song is one example of how they did it, it is in a sense an allegory. Each of the items in the song represents something of reli- gious significance. The hidden meaning of each gift was designed to help young Christians learn their faith. “On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me…” The “true love” rep- resents God and the “me” is the Christian (you). “partridge in a pear tree” refers to Jesus Christ who died on a tree as a gift from God. “two turtle doves” were the Old and New Testaments “three French hens” were Faith, Hope and Love—the three gifts of the Spirit that abide (1 Corinthians 13). “four calling birds” refers to the Four Gospels which sing the song of salvation through Jesus Christ. “five golden rings” refers to the first Five Books of the Old Testa- ment, the “Pentateuch” (also called the “Book of Moses”). “six geese a-laying” were the six days of creation.

I ask myself this but even I don’t have a specific answer yet. During the process where I search for my other self, all my worries will fade away because I must find the person who will lend his shoulders to me.” ~TOP Name: Choi Seung-hyun Date of Birth: November 4, 1987 Skills: Rap, Writing lyrics, Beatbox *Starred in the KBS Drama, ‘I am Sam’ The power to awaken a soul, sometimes it takes pain to be re-born. [~ Pt.One~] -I once wanted to be a lyric poet that composed and recited verses.- I became mesmerized with ‘Hip-Hop’ music when I was in Grade 5. I went crazy for this type of music because I listened to it all day and carefully noted all the rap lyrics. If we have to talk about Hip-Hop music, I have to briefly talk about the roots of American Hip-Hop. When I first started listening to Hip-Hop, it was divided up into East Coast and West Coast in America. Wu Tang Clan and Notorius B.I.G. represented the East Coast (New York) scene and they focused largely on the rap and the lyrics, while representing the West Coast (LA) was 2Pac who focused more on the melody. Although at that time in Korea and from my memory, more people listened to West Coast hip hop but I was more into the East Coast style.

  • Thesis, the Songs of 10 Rappers Were Analyzed
ABSTRACT Get Rich or Die Tryin’: A Semiotic Approach to the Construct of Wealth in Rap Music Kristine Ann Davis, M.A. Mentor: Sara J. Stone, Ph.D. For the past 30 years, rap music has made its way into the mainstream of America, taking an increasingly prominent place in popular culture, particularly for youth, its main consumers. This thesis looks at wealth through the lens of semiotics, an important component of critical/cultural theory, using a hermeneutical analysis of 11 rap songs, spanning the last decade of rap music to find signification and representation of wealth in the rap song lyrics. The research finds three important themes of wealth - relationship between wealth and the opposite sex, wealth that garners respect from other people, and wealth as a signifier for “living the good life” - and five signifiers of wealth – money, cars, attire, liquor, and bling. • Roots and Routes 188
Fendler / Roots and Routes 188 ROOTS AND ROUTES Hip-Hop from South Korea Ute Fendler University of Bayreuth [email protected] Abstract With the growing success of hip-hop in South Korea, the discussions about the authenticity of this genre increase and create cleavages between the mainstream and the underground rappers. The paper intends to analyze three examples of the contemporary music scene that are representative of different positions. Taking Simon Frith’s work on popular music as a means to construct identity, the paper suggests questioning the concept of authenticity (“roots”) and proposes instead conceiving hip-hop in South Korea as a movement at the crossroads (“routes”) of various influences and practices. Keywords Authenticity, Identity, Music videos, Performance, R&B, Rap About the Author Ute Fendler is chair of romance cultural and comparative cultural studies at the University of Bayreuth (Germany). Her research interests include intermedial and intercultural phenomenon, popular culture, migration, iconographies, music video, and performance. Kritika Kultura 29 (2017): –213 © Ateneo de Manila University <http://journals.ateneo.edu/ojs/kk/> Fendler / Roots and Routes 189 In the ongoing process of reaching out to global markets, pop music in South Korea undergoes fast changes, mainly under the influence of US-American and Western European markets, as literature on K-pop highlights (Choi and Maliangkay). John Lie dealt with the question of K-pop as music positioned between different influences: K-pop is symptomatic of the cultural transformation of South Korea: at once the almost complete repudiation of traditional cultures—both Confucian and folk—and the repeated rhetorical stress on the continuities between the past and the present: the nearly empty signifier that is South Korean cultural-national identity.
