POLITICS, PARODIES, AND THE PARADOX OF PSY’S ‘GANGNAM STYLE’ KEITH HOWARD∗ ABSTRACT In 2012, ‘Gangnam Style’ occasioned large flash mobs, three of the early ones taking place in Pasadena, Times Square in New York, and Sydney, Australia. Today, Psy, the singer of ‘Gangnam Style’, is regularly talked about as having brought K-pop to the world beyond East and Southeast Asia, and Korean tourism chiefs are actively planning a Korean Wave street in Gangnam, the district of Seoul lampooned by the song. But, ‘Gangnam Style’ has proved challenging to K-pop fans, who have resisted its gender stereotyping, its comic framing, and its simple dance moves that subsume the aesthetics of movement under a sequence of locations and action vignettes. At the same time, foreign success has given the song, and its singer, legitimacy in Korea so much so that, despite lyrics and video images that critique modern urban life and caricature the misogynistic failures of its protagonist, Psy headlined the inauguration celebrations of Korea’s incoming president, Park Geun-hye, in February 2013. This paper explores the song, its reception and critique by fans and others, and notes how, in an ultimate paradox that reflects the age of social media and the individualization of consumerism, the parodies the song spawned across the globe enabled Koreans to celebrate its success while ignoring its message. JYP Entertainment (035900 KQ ) Margin recovery in 3Q19 will be key Entertainment 2Q19 review: OP slightly misses expectations, at W9.4bn Results Comment For 2Q19, JYP Entertainment announced consolidated revenue of W39.2bn (+24.1% YoY; all growth figures hereafter are YoY) and operating profit of W9.4bn (+3.9%). Operating profit was August 16, 2019 slightly below our estimate (W10.3bn) and the consensus. Revenue growth continued to be driven by the content (+40% for album/digital music) and global digital (+52% to W1.3bn for YouTube revenue) segments , and the monetization of new artists also gained traction. That said, margins contracted due to increased artist royalties and management costs (gross margin fell 4.6%p to 43.7%). While the decline was modest, these costs are affected by a (Maintain) Buy number of factors, including the terms of individual artist contracts, leverage effects from album sales, and overseas schedules. In this paper, it is based on the film “Ryuichi Sakamoto: CODA”, dividing the chapters into the film’s narrative and arrangement, lens’ analysis and detail application, and the character creation. This paper aims to give an analysis of Stephen Nomura Schible’s style of detail presentation and character creation. KEYWORDS: Film analysis;Stephen Nomura Schible; Ryuichi Sakamoto; Documentary 1. Introduction The documentary film, "Ryuichi Sakamoto: CODA", directed by Stephen Nomura Schible was released in Japan in November 2017 (IMDb, 2018)[1]. In the musical terminology, coda means a passage that stresses the termination effect in the last paragraph of a movement, and its Japanese translation was called "Final Movement". The documentary was mainly edited in the chronological order from 2012 to 2017, a span of five years, involving films he joined in the past several decades, such as "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence", "The Last Emperor", "The Sheltering Sky", "The Revenant" as well as the precious clips of YMO activities 40 years ago (IMDb, 2018)[1]. Based on the efforts made by Ryuichi Sakamoto in anti-nuclearism, pursuit in the naturality of music as well as the love of music that he can't give up, dividing the chapters according to his several important performances, taking the form of interviews, records and material collages, the documentary presented the music career of Ryuichi Sakamoto and his current state of life. -

(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

Cut to some years later in the 2000s and now in the second decade of this century, there are hundreds of Korean TV series and Korean Pop bands making waves internationally. It is therefore evident how the impact fully the South Korean culture is being propagated across the globe. Being a country that boasts of heavy exports of cellphones and gadgets as such as well as cars and other automobiles have now added K-Pop and K- soaps in the leading export industry, quite possibly on the 2nd or 3rd place. -

BAB I PENDAHULUAN 1.1 Latar Belakang Media memiliki fungsi dan disfungsi tersendiri bagi khalayaknya. Khalayak secara sadar memilih media mana yang sesuai dengan keinginan dan kebutuhannya. Media massa adalah alat-alat dalam komunikasi yang bisa menyebarkan pesan secara serempak, cepat kepada audiens yang luas dan heterogen. Istilah “media massa” memberikan gambaran mengenai alat komunikasi yang bekerja dalam berbagai skala terbatas hingga dapat mencapai dan melibatkan siapa saja dalam masyarakat dalam skala yang sangat luas. Istilah media massa mengacu kepada sejumlah media yang telah ada sejak puluhan tahun yang lalu dan tetap digunakan hingga saat ini seperti surat kabar, majalah, film, radio, televisi, dan internet (Morissan, 2013:479). Kelebihan media massa dibanding dengan jenis komunikasi lain adalah ia bisa mengatasi hambatan ruang dan waktu. Bahkan media massa mampu menyebarkan pesan hampir seketika pada waktu yang tak terbatas (Nurudin, 2007). Media massa televisi merupakan suatu sarana yang sangat efektif dalam mempengaruhi pola pikir manusia karena televisi merupakan sebuah media yang sudah tidak asing lagi. Hampir disetiap rumah ada televisi. Sehingga televisi sebagai media komunikasi memiliki kemampuan untuk mengakses publik hingga ke ruang pribadi. Televisi merupakan hasil produk teknologi tinggi (hi-tech) yang menyampaikan isi pesan dalam bentuk audiovisual gerak. Isi pesan audiovisual gerak memiliki kekuatan yang sangat tinggi untuk mempengaruhi mental, pola 1 pikir, dan tindak individu. Televisi adalah media audio visual yaitu sebuah media yang tidak hanya bisa didengar saja tetapi juga bisa dilihat gambarnya. Pesatnya perkembangan televisi di Indonesia membuat banyaknya stasiun televisi yang menyuguhkan acara-acara menghibur di kala santai. Belakangan ini sering kita jumpai di berbagai stasiun televisi banyak yang menyajikan tayangan talkshow, magazine show dan acara reality show yang disajikan dengan beragam tema dan tampilan. -

V Olomouci dne Podpis Anotace Práce se zabývá hudebním žánrem k-pop, historií jeho vzniku, umělci, jejich rozvojem, a celkovým vlivem žánru na společnost. Snaží se přiblížit tento styl, který obsahuje řadu hudebních, tanečních a kulturních směrů, široké veřejnosti. Mimo samotnou podobu a historii k-popu se práce věnuje i temným stránkám tohoto fenoménu. V závislosti na dostupnosti literárních a internetových zdrojů zpracovává historii žánru od jeho vzniku až do roku 2020, spolu s tvorbou a úspěchy jihokorejských umělců. Součástí práce je i zpracování dvou dotazníků. Jeden zpracovává názor české veřejnosti na k-pop, druhý byl mířený na českou k-pop komunitu a její myšlenky ohledně tohoto žánru. Abstract This master´s thesis is describing music genre k-pop, its history, artists and their own evolution, and impact of the genre on society. It is also trying to introduce this genre, full of diverse music, dance and culture movements, to the public. -

Our conservation breeding programs for threatened and priority wildlife help a myriad of species, with our program for 11 Legacy Species representing an increased commitment to six Australian and five Sumatran species at risk of extinction. The Koala was added as an 11th Legacy Species in 2019, to reflect increasing threats to its survival. In the last 12 months alone, Taronga partnered with 28 organisations working on the front line of conservation across 17 countries.
