Dinner-Concert

in honor of ARTUR RUBINSTEIN

auspices of CONCERT ARTISTS GUILD

Wednesday Evening, April 11, 1962

Grand Ballroom, The Plaza ARTUR RUBINSTEIN

It is patently ridiculous to try to sum up in a few words the musical and human phenomenon known as Artur Rubinstein. He stands across our musical horizon like a colossus, bridging the aristocratic world of Joachim, d’Albert, Busoni and Paderewski and our own frenzied time. As Howard Taubman said in the Times, “Artur Rubinstein belongs to the grand line of pianists. In an era of violence and neuroticism he is a shining example of the civilized universal man.”

Last fall, in a magnificent gesture celebrating the 25th anniversary of his return to America under the management of S. Hurok and paying tribute to what he called “the indulgence” of the New York public over that period, Mr. Rubinstein gave New York one of its great musical ex periences of this century—ten Carnegie Hall recitals within forty days, all sold-out long in advance and all for the benefit of eleven charities im portant to him and to the residents of this city.

As the series began, ’ Harold C. Schonberg com mented, “More than any other living pianist, his playing reflects a culture, a joie de vivre, a sheer sanity, that makes him the despair of all possible competitors. This has nothing to do with the gorgeous sound he produces or the brilliant technique at his disposal. It is a question of bigness, direct ness and emotional clarity.”

Not only as a musician does Mr. Rubenstein inspire our admiration. To his many friends around the globe and to the hosts of persons who have been enchanted by his wit, enthusiasm, charm and intelligence, it is also the depth of his humanity which is extraordinary.

His interest in the young artist is not so well known. Probably only his intimates are aware of the extent to which he has encouraged, advised and aided aspiring musicians over the years. Remembering, perhaps, the kindness and interest that Joachim, Paderewski and others took in him as a youngster, Mr. Rubinstein has received scores of young artists in his homes in Paris and New York to talk, to listen, to play.

For what he is, what he stands for and what he has given to the world, we salute Artur Rubinstein tonight. PROGRAM
