EURIPIDES ( c485-406 BC): little is known of his life but ancient sources suggest that he was born of prosperous parents and numbered among his friends SOCRATES who would go to the theatre only to see Euripides' plays. Out of the 70 or more works that he is thought to have written only 17 have survived and of the 5 victories awarded to his plays one was given posthumously. Contentious and pro vocative in his writing he was twice indicted on charges of impiety and the production of THE TROJAN WOMEN itself may have roused such controversy that Euripides was forced to accept an offer of refuge from of Macedonia. After writing his only Dionysiae play, , he died in exile and was buried at Arethusa. Parodied mercilessly by ARISTOPHANES in his lifetime his popularity and influence was, eventually, to eclipse that of both AESCHYLUS and SOPHOCLES. THE TROJAN WOMEN was first performed shortly after the Greeks had attacked the little, would-be neutral, island of Melos massacring all adult males and enslaving the rest of the population. The topicality of the play was obvious and immediate.

WHO KNOWS IF THAT BE LIFE WHICH WE CALL DEATH AND LIFE BE DYING? SAVE ALONE THAT MEN LIVING BEAR GRIEF BUT WHEN THEY YIELD THEIR DEATH THEY HAVE NO SORROW THEN AND GRIEVE NO MORE. (Euripides' fragment, trans. Symonds)
