Written between 408 and 406 BCE, the year of Euripides’ death, the play was first produced the following year in a trilogy with The Bacchaeand Alcmaeon in Corinth by his son, Euripides the Younger, and won the first place at the Athenian City Dionysia festival. The winds have died because Agamemnon is being punished by the goddess Artemis, whom he offended. The only way to remedy this situation is for Agamemnon to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigenia, to the goddess Artemis. Agamemnon then admits that he has sent for Iphigenia to be brought to Aulis but he has changed his mind. -

Roisman ANHOOD in archaic and classical Greece-as in modern times-is generally manifested not so much in relation M ships with women as in relationships with other men, especially in the relationship between father and son. The Greek male is expected to produce sons who will continue his oikos (e.g. Soph. Ant. 641-45; Eur. Ale. 62lf, 654-57). Further, as Hesiod makes clear, sons should resemble their fathers in both looks and conduct, especially the latter (Op. 182,235; ef Ii. 6.476-81; Theophr. Char. 5.5). Such resemblance earns the father public esteem and proves his manliness; the lack of it may be cause for disparagement and calls his manliness into question. 1 We learn from Ajax and Philoctetes that Sophocles follows the Hesiodic imperative that sons should resemble their fathers in their natures and their accomplishments. Ajax sees himself as an unworthy son, having lost Achilles' arms to Odysseus, and prefers to commit suicide rather than face his father, Telamon, who took part in Heracles' expedition to Troy and got Hesione, the best part of the booty, as a reward (Aj. 430-40,462-65, 470ff, 1300-303; Diod. 4.32.5). At the same time, he expects his son, Eurysaces, to be like himself in nature, valor, and in everything else ('ttl.~' aA.A.' OIlOlO~, Aj. 545-51). Sophocles' Philoctetes, on the other hand, presents the strug gle between Odysseus and Philoctetes for the 'paternity' of Neoptolemus, as each tries to mold the young man in his own 1 Even in contemporary Greece the intense male rivalry for proving oneself takes place among men alone, while women and flocks serve as the object of this rivalry. -

Senecan tragic characters and choruses often echo the language of Virgil’s epic in provocative ways; these constitute a contrastive reworking of the original Virgilian contents and context, one that has not to date been fully considered by scholars. -

ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF KING MEMNON’S AITHIOPES IN THE EPIC OF AITHIOPIS OF THE TROJAN EPIC CYCLE Periklis Deligiannis The historicity of the legend of the Trojan War is rather still far from been verified, and whether this war actually took place, is still being intensively discussed among the scholars’ cycles. Those who accept the historicity of this legend have at times attempted to equate peoples, tribes and states which are mentioned by the epic poems of the so-called “Trojan Epic Cycle” with peoples, tribes and states of later historical periods. The Iliad gives us a description of the hypothetical military operations under the walls of Troy, but does not inform us about the continuation and the end of the war. Other poems and sources of the "Trojan cycle" inform us about the latter: the epic poem Aithiopis quotes that after Hector’s death, the Amazons with their queen Penthesilea came to reinforce the Trojans. Aithiopis (Αιθιοπίς, in Latin: Aithiopis) is an epic of the ancient Greek literature which is lost but some important fragments of it survived in the works of other ancient authors. It was an epic poem of the aforementioned Epic Cycle concerning the Trojan War: this cycle narrates the entire history of the Trojan War in epic verse. Aithiopis comes chronologically immediately after the Homeric Iliad, and is followed by the story of the Little Iliad. The Aithiopis is sometimes attributed by ancient authors to Arctinos of Miletos. According to the story of the Aithiopis, Penthesilea was killed by Achilles and her army was defeated by the Achaeans. -

ANNE BARTON Anne Barton 1933–2013 IN 1953 SHAKESPEARE QUARTERLY, then, as now, one of the two leading academic Shakespeare journals in the world, published an article concisely titled ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’.1 The list of contributors identified the author as ‘Miss Bobbyann Roesen, a Senior at Bryn Mawr’, who ‘is the first under- graduate to contribute an essay to Shakespeare Quarterly. She attended the Shakespeare Institute at Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer of 1952 and hopes to pursue graduate studies in Renaissance literature at Oxford or Cambridge.’2 Looking back forty years later, the former Miss Roesen, now Anne Barton, had ‘a few qualms and misgivings’ about reprinting the article in a collection of some of her pieces. As usual, her estimate of her own work was accurate, if too modest: As an essay drawing fresh attention to a play extraordinarily neglected or mis- represented before that date, it does not seem to me negligible. Both its high estimate of the comedy and the particular reading it advances are things in which I still believe. But, however influential it may have been, it is now a period piece, written in a style all too redolent of a youthful passion for Walter Pater.3 Undoubtedly influential and far from negligible, the article not only continues to read well, for all its Paterisms, but also continues to seem an extraordinary accomplishment for an undergraduate. SOME REFLECTIONS ON AESCHYLUS’ AETNAE(AE)* As it is well-known, there are several contributions which deal with the questions raised by the little amount of evidence available on Aeschylus’ Aetnae(ae)1. Unfortunately, it is not the appearance of any new data that has prompted this article, but rather realizing that some points made by my predecessors need rectifying, where- as other interesting elements (not certainties yet, though) deserve wider appreciation.
