ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF KING MEMNON’S AITHIOPES IN THE EPIC OF AITHIOPIS OF THE TROJAN EPIC CYCLE Periklis Deligiannis The historicity of the legend of the Trojan War is rather still far from been verified, and whether this war actually took place, is still being intensively discussed among the scholars’ cycles. Those who accept the historicity of this legend have at times attempted to equate peoples, tribes and states which are mentioned by the epic poems of the so-called “Trojan Epic Cycle” with peoples, tribes and states of later historical periods. The Iliad gives us a description of the hypothetical military operations under the walls of Troy, but does not inform us about the continuation and the end of the war. Other poems and sources of the "Trojan cycle" inform us about the latter: the epic poem Aithiopis quotes that after Hector’s death, the Amazons with their queen Penthesilea came to reinforce the Trojans. Aithiopis (Αιθιοπίς, in Latin: Aithiopis) is an epic of the ancient Greek literature which is lost but some important fragments of it survived in the works of other ancient authors. It was an epic poem of the aforementioned Epic Cycle concerning the Trojan War: this cycle narrates the entire history of the Trojan War in epic verse. Aithiopis comes chronologically immediately after the Homeric Iliad, and is followed by the story of the Little Iliad. The Aithiopis is sometimes attributed by ancient authors to Arctinos of Miletos. According to the story of the Aithiopis, Penthesilea was killed by Achilles and her army was defeated by the Achaeans. -

Homer’s Use of Myth Françoise Létoublon Epic and Mythology The Homeric Epics are probably the oldest Greek literary texts that we have,1 and their subject is select episodes from the Trojan War. The Iliad deals with a short period in the tenth year of the war;2 the Odyssey is set in the period covered by Odysseus’ return from the war to his homeland of Ithaca, beginning with his departure from Calypso’s island after a 7-year stay. The Trojan War was actually the material for a large body of legend that formed a major part of Greek myth (see Introduction). But the narrative itself cannot be taken as a mythographic one, unlike the narrative of Hesiod (see ch. 1.3) - its purpose is not to narrate myth. Epic and myth may be closely linked, but they are not identical (see Introduction), and the distance between the two poses a particular difficulty for us as we try to negotiate the the mythological material that the narrative on the one hand tells and on the other hand only alludes to. Allusion will become a key term as we progress. The Trojan War, as a whole then, was the material dealt with in the collection of epics known as the ‘Epic Cycle’, but which the Iliad and Odyssey allude to. The Epic Cycle however does not survive except for a few fragments and short summaries by a late author, but it was an important source for classical tragedy, and for later epics that aimed to fill in the gaps left by Homer, whether in Greek - the Posthomerica of Quintus of Smyrna (maybe 3 c AD), and the Capture of Troy of Tryphiodoros (3 c AD) - or in Latin - Virgil’s Aeneid (1 c BC), or Ovid’s ‘Iliad’ in the Metamorphoses (1 c AD). -

And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel ••. in the land of Shinar. 1 Ancient Sumer, the biblical land of Shinar, modern lower Mesopotamia, flourished in the third millenium B.C. covering the territorial expanse of the Tigris/Euphrates River Valley. Embracing the shores of the Persian Gulf, Sumer extended north to Akkad, a distance of about 320 miles, thus constituting Southern Babylonia. The appellation Chaldea, frequently applied to the region, appears to have been introduced by the Assyrians in the ninth century B.c.2 The designations Babylon, Babylonia and Chaldea have been used extensively, particularly by nine teenth century scholars, in reference to the area now almost exclusively known as Sumer. Sumer appears to be the first major high-culture of western Asia. She bequeathed to her successor states a tradi tion of great achievement. Her many contributions to civili zation are well known. Brilliant agriculturalists, the Sumerians built very sophisticated canals and reservoirs to irrigate their fields. They possessed both an advanced legal system and a well developed knowledge of medicine and were perhaps the ancient world's greatest astronomers.3 While these salient facts regarding Sumer's obvious cultural genius are well known, the important question of the racial composition of its population is generally glossed over. This apparent cloud concerning race, however, is very thin and there is a substantial body of evidence in support of the position that the civilization of Sumer was the product of Black migrations from Africa's Nile Valley. -

Introduction The Iliad as oral poetry Edward McCrorie’s translation of the Iliad is a remarkable achievement, not least for its attention to the rhythms and sounds as well as the sense of the Greek original.1 This is especially welcome because meter is a key to understanding the poem. Unlike English meters, which are based on accent, those of Greek verse are based on the length of the syllables, while the accents are voiced independently. The verses of Greek epic are composed of six feet. Each foot begins with a long syllable, marked as —, followed by two short syllables, ˘˘, or another long syllable. For example, the phrase “queenly Hera” is scanned in Greek as “pōtnĭă Hērē.” In most Homeric verses, a word ends in the third foot, causing a break known as a “caesura,” which may occur after the first syllable (b), or in between two short syllables (c). -

These works deserve our careful attention as the principal sources of the medieval Troy story and as examples of the anti-Homeric literature of late antiquity. In the introduction I have briefly described the influence of our authors on later European literature, and have tried to show how our Latin texts depend on Greek originals. For the latter purpose I have found the scholarship of Nathaniel Edward Griffin especially rewarding for Dictys and that of Otmar Schissel von Fleschenberg for Dares. I have used the notes to comment on matters of form (how our Latin texts probably differ from their Greek originals), to point out difficulties and incon sistencies, and to cite some of the sources and parallel versions of the stories that Dictys and Dares tell. -

But others say that Memnon was buried in Paltus, which is on the coast of Syria in front of the island of Cyprus. -

The difficulty of any genuine attempt to determine the process by which our texts of the Iliad and the Odyssey were composed may well lead even an optimist to despair. But the greatness of the poems inspires lasting pleasure and interest in every age and I hope will permit a hearing for my claim, however deluded, to be able to progress a little nearer the heart of the matter.
