FAQ – Law Schools in Canada

Below is some general information to help you with your applications for Law School. Remember, if you have specific questions contact the school directly.

What are the application requirements for Law School?

 Refer to www.ouac.on.ca/olsas for more information on each school’s prerequisite requirements  If you have a question regarding course equivalency, please contact the school directly o Be specific – identify the prerequisite requirement you want considered by admissions and send the description of the course you are inquiring about (copy and paste the course description from the McMaster undergraduate course calendar)

General Requirements:

 Minimum of three years completion of an undergraduate program; preference may be given to students who have completed their degree  (OLSAS) on-line application form (all sections, including Verifiers, must be completed)  Academic requirements  LSAT scores  Autobiographical sketch  Personal statement  Supplemental Application Form  Transcripts (for all post-secondary institutions attended)  OLSAS Letters of Reference form (2 required, recommend at least 1 academic reference be provided)  Other supporting documentation as necessary

OLSAS applications open mid-August with a deadline typically in the first week of November.

How long will Law School take to complete?

 The first level-law degree takes three years to complete.

Steps to become licensed in Ontario:

Articling  Work under the supervision of a licensed for ten months. Or

Complete the Law Society of ’s Law Practice Program (alternative to articling)  A four-month training course and a four-month work placement.

The Admission Exams

 Successfully complete the and examinations administered by the Law Society of Upper Canada offered three times per year.

FAQ – Law School Admission Test (LSAT)

When should I take the LSAT?

 Many law schools recommend the LSAT be taken by December for admission in the following fall.

Can I retake the LSAT?

 Yes, candidates may take the LSAT up to three times in a two year span.  If the LSAT is taken more than once, all LSAT scores may be given to each law school. Based on the school’s policy, your highest score or an average of all scores may be considered for admission.

What is involved with the LSAT?

 The LSAT is a half-day standardized test administered four times each year (February, June, October and December)  The test provides a standard of measure for acquired reading and writing skills.  The test consists of five 35 minute sections of multiple choice questions, which can include: o Reading comprehension questions o Analytical reasoning questions o Logical reasoning questions
