Welcome to Left Forum 2012 Thank You for Participating in Left Forum 2012 WELCOME TO LEFT FORUM 2012 Thank you for participating in Left Forum 2012. The conference has steadily grown over the years, and has been trans- formed by the influence of thousands of participants from six continents and myriad political perspectives. We are proud of this year’s gathering, humbled by the diversity of voices it includes, and honored that you can join us. We are grateful to be hosted by Pace University for the fourth consecutive year. Without critical support and input from their faculty, staff and students—who worked tirelessly with us to ensure a successful conference—Left Forum could not happen. The same must be said of the hundreds of volunteers who help before, during and after the event to make the weekend possible. This program guide includes the full conference schedule, and will help you navigate the more than 400 panels, work- shops, and events happening this weekend. Please look through it carefully. The accompanying map should get you there on time, but feel free to ask a staff member or volunteer for assistance. We also heartily invite you to participate in the Left Forum Exhibition, held in the student union, multi-purpose room and reading room, located next to the registration tables. The Exhibition is the primary meeting and networking space for the conference, and includes book publishers and movement organizers. With so much happening at once, we ask that you help us keep things running smoothly: please keep your conference badge visible. Additionally, we ask that you not overcrowd rooms; due to fire code restrictions, we ask anyone who cannot find a seat to please select another panel to attend. Please note that the plenary sessions and all stand-alone Schimmel events are first come, first served. Tickets for the Saturday event with MIchael Moore, as well as the Sunday closing plenary, will be available at the registration desk starting at 12:00 pm on the day of the respective event. In be- tween panels, you can find food options in the first floor cafeteria in addition to many culinary options in the vicinity of Pace University. Lastly, we apologize that we are unable to provide childcare for this year’s conference due to budget constraints and other difficulties. Finally, we encourage you to indulge the opportunity to share and discuss ideas with each other, and take advantage of the rare occasion for such a rich public debate. We organize the Left Forum to open an arena for dialogue on the most pressing matters of our world, with an ardent belief that this will help change it. To this end, we once again thank you for your participation, and look forward to seeing you in the future. • Real Democracy in the Occupy Movement
NO STABLE GROUND: REAL DEMOCRACY IN THE OCCUPY MOVEMENT ANNA SZOLUCHA PhD Thesis Department of Sociology, Maynooth University November 2014 Head of Department: Prof. Mary Corcoran Supervisor: Dr Laurence Cox Rodzicom To my Parents ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This thesis is an outcome of many joyous and creative (sometimes also puzzling) encounters that I shared with the participants of Occupy in Ireland and the San Francisco Bay Area. I am truly indebted to you for your unending generosity, ingenuity and determination; for taking the risks (for many of us, yet again) and continuing to fight and create. It is your voices and experiences that are central to me in these pages and I hope that you will find here something that touches a part of you, not in a nostalgic way, but as an impulse to act. First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my supervisor, Dr Laurence Cox, whose unfaltering encouragement, assistance, advice and expert knowledge were invaluable for the successful completion of this research. He was always an enormously responsive and generous mentor and his critique helped sharpen this thesis in many ways. Thank you for being supportive also in so many other areas and for ushering me in to the complex world of activist research. I am also grateful to Eddie Yuen who helped me find my way around Oakland and introduced me to many Occupy participants – your help was priceless and I really enjoyed meeting you. I wanted to thank Prof. Szymon Wróbel for debates about philosophy and conversations about life as well as for his continuing support.

  • Corruption in Civil Society Activism in the Niger Delta and Defines Csos to Include Ngos, Self-Help Groups and Militant Organisations
THE ROLE OF CORRUPTION ON CIVIL SOCIETY ACTIVISM IN THE NIGER DELTA BY TOMONIDIEOKUMA BRIGHT A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE LANCASTER UNIVERSITY FOR DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY SUBMISSION DATE: SEPTEMBER, 2019 i Abstract: This thesis studies the challenges and relationships between the Niger delta people, the federal government and Multinational Oil Companies (MNOCs). It describes the major problems caused by unmonitored crude oil exploitation as environmental degradation and underdevelopment. The study highlights the array of roles played by Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in filling the gap between the stakeholders in the oil industry and crude oil host communities. Except for the contributions from Austin Ikelegbe (2001), Okechukwu Ibeanu (2006) and Shola Omotola (2009), there is a limitation in the literature on corruption and civil society activism in the Niger delta. These authors dwelt on the role of CSOs in the region’s struggle. But this research fills a knowledge gap on the role of corruption in civil society activism in the Niger delta and defines CSOs to include NGOs, self-help groups and militant organisations. Corruption is problematic in Nigeria and affects every sector of the economy including CSOs. The corruption in CSOs is demonstrated in their relationship with MNOCs, the federal government, host communities and donor organisations. Smith (2010) discussed the corruption in NGOs in Nigeria which is also different because this work focuses on the role of corruption in CSOs in the Niger delta and the problems around crude oil exploitation. The findings from the fieldwork using oral history, ethnography, structured and semi-structured interview methods show that corruption impacts CSOs activism in diverse ways and has structural and historical roots embedded in colonialism.

  • Indigenous Law: Issues, Individuals, Institutions And
Fourword: Issues, Individuals, Institutions and Ideas JOHN BORROWS∗ There is a story about a young man who had a dream. In this dream he saw people scrambling up and down the rugged faces of four hills. When he looked closer he noticed each hill seemed to have different groups of people trying to scale its heights.1 He was perplexed. The first hill, to the east, was covered with very small people. Many were weeping and crying; some were covered in blood or lay lifeless at the base. The foot of the hill where they were piled was shrouded in darkness. The shadows and twisted heap made it hard to see how many were gathered there in death, or life. A bit higher, other tiny bodies could be seen crawling over rocks and spring scrub, determinedly edging their way higher over rough terrain. Knees were scraped, hands were red, but their upward progress was noticeable. At other points it was possible to see some totter forward on wobbly legs, through halting steps and tender help from a few around them. Small bits of tobacco would change hands in thanks. Some were laughing and playing, joyfully climbing to their destination. They seemed to be enjoying the challenge that stood before them. They learned from their mistakes, and carefully watched those around them to see how to go on. Yet, every so often one would trip, or lose their hold on the hill, and tumble and scrape to the bottom. A few had reached the top, and stood in the bright yellow glow of the morning sun.
