Jean Louis Beyerlé (1738-1805) was a councillor at the Parliament of Nancy, member of the ”Société de l'harmonie universelle” and active in the ”Hund- schen Tempelherrensystem Comthur” under the name of Ludovicus Eques a Tuscia.

Inscribed on front wrapper ”St. Nicolaus Visby”. 8000:- Wolstieg 43102. Kloss 3898. ”Selten. Erblickt in dem Buche den klaren Jesuitismus u. dessen Zusammenbringung mit der Frmrei”. First edition, with the key plate. This is a polemic tract against the Jesuits and ”Des erreurs et de la verité” by Louis Claude, published in 1775. Johann Joachim Bode (1731-93) was a German literary translator and a friend of Lessing. He translated ”A Sentimental Journey”, ”Vicar of Wakefield”, ”Tom Jo- nes” and other works to German. As a freemason he served as deputy grand master of the Grand Lodge of Hamburg. In 1782 he met Adolph Knigge, one of the leading members of the radical Illuminati and he joi- ned them acquiring the rank of Major illuminatus in January 1783. After the order was banned in Bavaria in 1784, with Knigge's resignation and the escape of the founder Adam Weishaupt, Bode became the de facto leader.

Both works ”Sehr selten”, ac- cording to Wolfstieg. The second work is in French on pp. 1-19 and in German pp. 20-36. Both the German text of ”Le chevalier de la triple croix” and the first work ”Ma- sonnerie mystique” were later published in Lenning’s ”Encyclopedie der Freimaurerey” (1824). In ink on front wrapper: ”St. Nicolaus Visby”. 1800:- Wolfstieg 1120. Jean-Simon Boubée (1773-1870) was a known freemason who published several books on freemasonry and freemasonic poems. His best known work is perhaps ”Souvenirs maçonniques” published in 1866. The ”Études historiques” were criticised and Boubée was forced to defend himself with the leaflet ”Non! nous ne serons pas damnés ou réponse à cer- taines attaques contre nos études historiques et contre la Franc-Maçonnerie” in the same year.

Jean-Pierre Simon Boubée (1773-1870) was according the the title page ”L’un des Grand maitres ad vitam 90e et dernier Degré de l’Ordre Maç∴ de Misraim. Boubée also published ”Souvenirs maçonniques” and several other titles on freemasonry. The Rite of Misraim was constituted in 1805 by several ma- sons who had been refused admission into the Supreme council of the Scot- tish rite. Others claim that the Rite of Misraim was founded already in 1782. It was established in Paris in 1814. It was however never recognized by the Grand Orient of as a part of the maso- nry. Its rite consists of 90 degrees, divi- ded into 4 series and 17 classes, mostly borrowed from the Scottish rite.

The first was published anonymously in 1804 and according to Wolfstieg written by the chemist David Brewster. Alexander Laurie (or Lawrie) (dead 1830 or 1831) was a bookseller in Edinburgh and Secretary to the Grand Lodge of Scotland. OCLC460183644 (one copy). Wolfstieg 8307 ”Sehr selten”. Kloss 2921. A German translation ”Vertheidigung der Freymäurer” was published the same year. This rare pamphlet by the lodge ”La Constance” in Aix-la-Chapelle concerns the attacks against the freemasonry in Aachen 1779, which spread also to Aix-la-Chapelle. Two monks in Aachen, the dominican Louis Greinemann and a capucin, Schuff, accused the freemasons of atheism, fraud and other sins in their sermons. They also claimed that the entrance fee to a lodge was 30 silver coins, the award to Judas. Several de- fense tracts by freemasons against these accusations were published..

Kloss 2712 "Abdruck von Acten des Asiatischen Obermeisters Itzig zu Berlin, welche zum Theil, in neuerer Abfassung, und zum Theile vollständiger vorhanden sind. Es ist zu bemerken, daß der Herausgeber die Papiere ohne Auswahl und innere Ordnung abdruckten, und vieles hieher gehörige unbeachtet ließ." This is the main source to the teachings of the order and contains at the end chapters with questions and answers regarding alchemy and cabbala, and also an ”Anhang ueber die Nichtigkeit des Fesslerschen Reformation”. The famous occult 18th century order of the Asiatic Brethren was a freemasonic sys- tem founded in 1781 by Hans Heinrich Freiherr von Ecker und Eckhoffen, initially called ”Die Ritter von Licht”. The system had five levels and it was a reform of the Rosenkreuzers and had occult teachings. It stands out among the German masonic organizations of the time as it welcomed Jewish members, at least for a time, and was influenced both by Sabbatianism and by Frankism. Among its members was Charles of Hessen and Frederick VI of .

Ink notation on wrapper and half title. 1200:- First edition. Camillo Fritz Discher (1884-1976) was an Austrian architect and, according to the title page: ”Baumeister. Mitglied der Architecture- Vereinigung ”Wiener Bauhütte” der ”Innung der Baumeister, uralte Haupthütte in Wien” und ande- rer Berufs- und Standesvereinigungen”.

Fine copy. 1500:- Wolfstieg 40319 (doesn't mention the portrait). This collection of masonic poems by the painter and author Heinrich Ehrich (1825-1909) was published by Die Loge zum Pelikan i Hamburg, in which Ehrich was active. Several of them were published in separate publications earlier. The dedication contains thanks for memorable days in Visby, Gotland during 1910 and 1911.

This is an anti-masonic tract and especially polemic against ”Der neu-aufgesteckte brennende Leuchter des Freymäurer-Ordens...” published in Leipzig 1746. Its content is summarized by Wolfstieg as: ”Die Frmr, die gefährlichte Gesellschaft der Welt, sie bereiten das Kommen des Antichristen vor.” 14 (ENDRES, Franz Carl.) Franz Carl Endres (1878-1954) was a German mi- litary officer active in the Ottoman Turkey and author of several books, including one novel. He become active 1920 as a freemason in the lodge ”Zum aufgehenden Licht an der Isar” in Munich and soon in several others in Germany and Austria as well as in France.

From the library of Br. Axel Poignant, with his label, and from Svenska Stora Landslogens bibliotek, with its book plate. 750:- Part one only of three. Part two was published in 1804 and part three in 1807. Ignaz Aurelius Fessler (1756-1839) was an Hungarian ex-capuchin monk, writer and histo- rian, and for a couple of years an influential freemason. He was commissioned by the freemasons in Berlin to assist the philosopher Johann Gott- lieb Fichte in reforming the sta- tutes and ritual of their lodge. At first it went well and Fichte was disposed to aid Fessler in his proposed reforms, but later they became bitter opponents. Third edition, the first was published in 1861-62. A classic history of freemasonry, published in at least seven German editions and in several translations. Joseph Gabriel Findel (1828-1905) was a bookseller, publisher and a Masonic writer, aut- hor of several works on freemasonry. He was editor to the Masonic newspa- per ”Die Bauhütte” in Leipzig.

20 GOULD, Robert Freke. The Four Old Lodges, Founders of Modern Freemasonry, and their Decendants. A record of the progress of the craft in England and of the career of every regular lodge down to the union of 1813. With an authentic compi- lation of descriptive lists for historic reference. London, Spencer’s Masonic Depôt, 1879. 4to. (8),+ 82 pp. Worn publ. blue cloth with gilt lettering on front board. From the library of Ernst Richard Anderson, Strängnäs. 1200:- Wolfstieg 60852. Robert Freke Gould (1836-1915) was a famous historian on Freemasonry. His most well known work is the large "History of Freemasonry", published in three volumes in 1883-87. This work is about the four old English lodges that in 1717 formed the first Grand Lodge in the world and hence started the modern freemasonry. 21 [Grand Lodge Astraea.] Code des lois de la Grande Loge Astree a l’Or∴ de St. Pe- tersbourg. Sewn as issued with worn blue wrapper, the front wrap- per is missing. Small labels pasted on the title page. From the library of IX Frimurar- Provinsens arkiv och bibliotek, with its book plate. 3500:- Kloss 216. First french edition of the bylaws for the Grand Loge Astraea in St. Peters- burg. The German original ”Gesetzbuch der Großen Freimaurer-Loge Asträa” was publis- hed in Leipzig 1815. The Grand Lodge Astraea was formed in 1815. It united nineteen smaller lodges and coun- ted 1404 members. Its rival was the Swedish Provincial Lodge of Russia, with seven smal- ler feuding lodges under its umbrella and 230 members. Leo Tolstoy describes some of the rituals in his novel ”War and Peace”. As Emperor Alexander grew increasingly conservative, the Masonic-style political clubs were outlawed in 1822 and the interdict was extended by Nicholas I. Freemasonry was legalized and enjoyed a brief revival after the First Russian Revolution but the Bolsheviks had all the lodges closed in the wake of the October Revolution in 1917. The lodge "New Astrea" was established 1993 in St. Petersburg.

Wolfstieg 11040. Otto Hieber (1840-1929) was Logenmeister in the lodge Zum Todten- kopf und Phoenix and in the Provinzia-Ordens-Kapitel in Prussia. He wrote several works on freemasonry. The Johannes lodge Zum Todtenkopf und Phönix was esta- blished in Köngsberg in Prussia in 1772 and was active until 1935 when it was forbid- den by the NSDAP. After the war the lodge was reestablished in Western Berlin by surviving brothers from the earlier Königsberg lodge.

Wolfstieg mentions six plates but the list of plates says 5. This toward the freemasonry very critical work was never published in latin, as the title suggests. It was very popular and six or seven editions were published up to 1778. This edition is the only one in which 16 other mockery titles intented to be pu- blished are mentioned in the preface. The list is in this copy crossed over with ink. In calling the book a sequel to ”L’ordre des Franc-Masons trahi”, which contains the text ”Les secret des franc-maçons” by Gabriel Louis Calabre Perau, Larudan has tried to connect his book that famous book by Perau. 32 (LAURIE, W. Christoph Friedrich Nicolai (1733- 1811) was a German author and bookseller, friend of Lessing and Mendelssohn and an important part of the German Enlighten- ment. He was an active freemason, member of the Berliner Loge ”Zur Eintracht” under the main loge ”Zu den drei Weltkugeln”, and he was one of the founders of the ”Berliner Mittwochsgesellschaft” and a ma- sonic researcher.

He is perhaps most known for his ”Les Roses, décrites et classées se- lon leur ordre naturel” publised in 1828 with illustrations by Pierre Joseph Redouté. As a freemason he was active in the lodge Grand Orient de France and he also pu- blished ”Histoire de la Franc-maçonnerie et de la Grande Loge d'Écosse”, 1813.
