In 1858, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem, The Courtship of Miles Standish, catapulted the narrative’s three protagonists – Mayflower passengers , and Priscilla Mullins – into instant fame. Longfellow based his story on the Alden family tradition that a young Priscilla Mullins, one of the Mayflower’s few marriageable women, had captured the hearts of both Standish and Alden. At the request of the gruff and awkward Standish, Alden set aside his own unspoken feelings and spoke on his friend’s behalf. Priscilla, however, made her own choice (in a suitably Victorian manner). “In a tremulous voice” and with “eyes overrunning with laugher,” she responded “Why don’t you speak for yourself, John?” In so doing, she won the hearts of millions of Americans. Although the “love triangle” is a legend, Priscilla’s choice is not out of character. The daughter of a prosperous man with Nonconforming religious views, she would have possessed both the diverse skills needed to manage a large household and the independent mindset of a Dissenter. Choosing to remain in the Colony after the death of her parents and brother during the first winter of 1620/21, she not only survived but, as William Bradford wrote in 1651, “married with John Alden, who are both living and have eleven children.” Today, in the 21st century, the descendants of the intrepid and resolute Priscilla, and those who share in the mission of preserving her Duxbury homestead, annually present the “Speak for Yourself” award to a small coterie of equally strong, capable and independent women. Our exceptional honorees continue, in the spirit of Priscilla Mullins Alden, to choose their own paths, thereby creating better lives for themselves and their communities.
