Alden Kindred of America 2018 - 2019 Annual Report 1 ARE WE STRONG ENOUGH? A Message from Pauline R. Kezer, President, The Alden Kindred of America, Inc. s we sail from this year 2018/19 into 2020 we face many opportunities and challenges. A1) Can we harness the energy created by the 400th Anniversary of the Landing of the Pilgrims in 2020 to protect and preserve our Alden Historic Sites in perpetuity? 2) Can we increase our historic footprint and create the Alden Center for Living History by enlarging our current Alden Barn? 3) Can we increase our membership base and its financial support for the Kindred to the point where we can create a designated fund for the Alden House and First Site? 4) Can we build the capacity needed to use 2020 as a launching pad to advance and secure the Kindred’s assets and presence for the next half century?

Yes, this has been a year of questions, discussions, planning, and progress as we inch forward to begin a Capital Cam- paign, hopefully in 2020. We are sharing our vision for enlarging our space, our programs, and our outreach. It will take ALL of us to make this happen. WE are ready to begin in earnest. The big question is…. “ARE YOU?” What needs to happen within the next six months is to get a large handful of “lead” donations so that we will be able to announce a full- blown Capital Campaign by the next Alden Reunion. The total needed for the Campaign is just under $3 million. It is by far the largest undertaking by the Alden Kindred EVER! It means that we should raise $1 million before we launch the campaign. Is this possible? We have been doing our homework, looking at external resources, grants, etc., and yes, assessing the giving ability of our “Aldens”. We believe it is possible. DO YOU? The Aldens need to be the “first donors” to step up. To date we have a little more than $100,000 given and pledged. “We have a long way to go and a short time to get there.” I challenge every Alden Kindred Member and any Alden kin to seri- ously consider what their gifts collectively could do to preserve, protect, and grow our National Historic Landmark. I think of John and Priscilla Alden. Thankfully, they were strong enough to raise ten children in a tiny home in a strange new land. Priscilla was strong enough to be their teacher and nurturer. John was strong enough to become a leader in the Colony for over 65 years, create a successful fur trade to pay off the debt of the Mayflower Voyage, and manage a farm and 100+ acres. Together, they were strong enough to produce over a million Alden kin. They produced artists, industrialists, poets, US Presidents, Technology Leaders, and YOU! YOU are part of an incredible gene pool, and each one of us has the capacity to help in some way,

Dear Alden Kindred Members and Friends, By next spring, we will determine the size of a full campaign and hopefully launch it at the Annual meeting. Our busy and productive year at the Alden Historic Sites is 2019at some level, to ensure that our story is forever told and accurately remembered! celebrated by saying thank you to our hard-working staff and Ideally, we would like to raise $3.5 million to: our members who have financially supported our mission ◆ Create a Preservation Fund ($1m) for our house and through membership dues and additional contributions! We are working in concert So, in addition to all the yearly Alden Kindred responsibilities with Plymouth 400, Duxbury 2020, Pilgrim Hall, and of running our National Historic Landmark, in 2019 we the other Mayflower families to make certain that2020 will be seeking the generous support of all Alden Kindred and beyond is a huge success. We have been asked to be members, foundations, corporate support, legacies, and $1.2 million for the Alden Center for Living History the 2020 Visitors center for the Town of Duxbury. We are major gifts. It is a big undertaking, but we are approaching pleased to say “yes”, fully realizing that it means we must be it with the energy, perseverance, and determination that open year -round, increase our footprint to accommodate John and Priscilla Alden used to create this country and an onslaught of visitors, enhance our programs of living their lasting legacy. Grit and passion for our heritage will history, and have the house and grounds fully functional. lead the way. I invite all of you to join this journey that began 400 years ago. Toward that end, the Board has gone through a lengthy process to analyze where we are and where we want to be. Using a model of “Getting from No Longer …. to Not Yet”, we have taken a serious look at our VALUE as a National Historic Landmark, our SUPPORT now and how it can grow, and our CAPACITY to handle 2020 needs and beyond. These three tenants make up the legs of our stool, and all must be equally sturdy to support “Thanks to the purchase of the property and the critical planning our Kindred. Since then, a small vision taskforce was formed to determine how we move forward. Thanks to Alden Keyser (Chair), John W. The results were positive. All feel that2020 , with the Alden House Historic Site playing a key role, is exciting and a catalyst for action. The respondents unanimously supported the Preservation of our historic assets, especially the House. Sincerely, Keeping the history of the Aldens and other Pilgrims alive and accurate was very important. Genealogy, tracing our heritages, had strong support as well. 2 Alden Kindred of America 2018 - 2019 Annual Report Therefore, the Board of Directors at its June2018 meeting voted unanimously to take the next giant step towards a Capital Campaign and enter into a “Quiet Phase” where we will seek Pauline Ryder Kezer out Kindred members and ask for their financial support. Patti Ryan and Lynn Dale are residents of Duxbury; Michelle Cully is from Randolph, MA; Sue Salvemini is from Shrewsbury, MA; and we honored our first cousin and member of AKA, Melissa Gates from NH. The Village at Duxbury hosted a lovely honoree reception for us in April and we had a new venue this year for the event in May. The Jones River Trading Post in Kingston and Plymouth Bay Catering did a fabulous job with the food and drink and at a very good price. Our garden club provided gorgeous lilac centerpieces and we held a silent auction and a raffle with 100 people in attendance. Our net income was over $10,900, the highest ever, up 13% from last year! We would like to thank our fabulous Speak committee who worked to ensure this success: Anne Cobuzzi, Chair, Desiree Mobed, Rich Holmes, Pauline Kezer, Emily Zoltowski, Donna Wood and Nancy Capistran. Speak has honored 49 women over the past 13 years. We think Priscilla would be proud to know that her actions have inspired other women to speak for themselves, and on behalf of others, nearly 400 years later. Join us for the 14th Annual Speak event May 28, 2020.
