Dear Residents:

Welcome to the 2014 Town of Weymouth Recreation Division Summer Book. Again, there are some big changes for the 2014 season. Please take a moment to read the Important Information and Required Program Reading pages. Our newly designed web-page, www.weymouth.ma.us/rec, will have a digital version of this book with up to date information not available, or changed, since being published. This is your reference for the special events, program guidelines and transportation schedules. Be sure to create an account to have the Recreation Divisions monthly flyers, with great ideas dreamed up too late to make the summer book, delivered to your e-mail inbox.

Registration begins for Weymouth residents on February 27, 2014 and will open to everyone on March 13, 2014. Please coordinate with family and friends and register early to secure your summer of fun and save a bundle! Deep discounts will apply to most programs through May 1st! Register carefully and understand the newest KNOW refund policy.

Weymouth Recreation will offer eleven full weeks of summer programs from June 16th through August 29th. The major changes include: Less Wey-Fun; less Great Esker; more Wey-Fun@Esker in the form of Great Esker Park hosting Wey-Fun the weeks of June 16th – 20th, June 23rd – 27th, June 30th – July 3rd, August 18th – 22nd and August 25th – 29th. The Sprouts program, for children 3 – 6 years old, will expand to nine weeks and again be held at Weston Park behind the Tuft’s Library (rain site). Lane Beach will offer three two-week Red Cross certified swimming lesson sessions, weekly fundamental, intermediate and advanced sailing lessons and daily kayaking programs.

Wey-Fun will be held at Wessagusset School from July 7th – August 15th and be divided into two camps (age 4 – 8 and 8+ years old). Each camp will continue to be divided into two age groups 4 – 6 and 6 – 8 years old for the younger camp and 8 – 10 and 10+ years old for the older camp. The 4 – 8 year olds will again have swim lessons at Lane Beach available to them. The 8+ year olds campers can take advantage of swim lessons, kayaking and sailing at Lane Beach with deep discounts!

Family fun can be found in the free canoeing events at Great Esker Park, free kayaking at Lane Beach or at the popular Thursday night outdoor concert and movie series at the Ralph Talbot Amphitheatre next to Town Hall. Concerts are Thursdays, July 10th, 17th, 24th at 6:30 p.m. The Family Karaoke Night will be on July 31st. The movie series begins at dusk at the Ralph Talbot Amphitheatre and will feature “The Goonies” on August 7th, “Despicable Me 2” on August 14th, and finish the series on August 21st at Lane Beach with “The Goonies”!

Get outside and join us for an awesome summer of fun!

Sincerely,

Susan M. Kay Mayor

3 Important Information Registration and Refunds The Registration and KNOW refund policies are both designed to offer a black and white process that you, our customers, and our staff can understand and enforce. Both policies were designed to discourage refunds and the time lost in processing them. The KNOW refund policy will be strictly enforced. Please register very carefully.

Resident Registration schedule: All Wey-Fun, Wey-Fun@Esker, Great Esker, Sprouts, Lane Beach, Exceptional and Vendored (Science, Art, Drama and Sports) will begin February 27th. Pond Meadow and Junior Police Academy registration information will be announced in our April 4th flyer. To register in person between February 27th and March 12th residents must present a utility bill or a picture ID with the home address for each family they are registering. Registration opens to everyone on March 13th.

Resident/Non-resident Registration Policy Weymouth residents only may register from February 27th through March 11, 2014 - online and in person. Please respect this policy. Non-Weymouth residents who register between these dates will be removed. The residency / contact information you enter is critical in dealing with emergencies your child may experience during the programs. Your address must also match your credit card’s information or your card will be rejected. Registration in 4D: Notice how important May 1st and June 1st are Decide what you want to register for – Due to the KNOW refund policy (see next page) you should consider all other plans you have or may make throughout the summer. This policy is black and white! Discounts – Considerable discounts are offered on our programs and some vendored programs – through May 1st. The price differences and the KNOW refund policy are our effort to encourage early registration so we can plan better and keep prices as low as possible. Help us plan a better program and save money – register early! Discounts do not apply to the required t-shirts and IDs. Deposit – Every registration through May 1st requires a deposit. The deposits vary and hold your spot at the discounted price (if there is one). All registrations after May 1st require full payment. Deadline - All balances must be paid by June 1st or the registration will be cancelled – minus the 20% deposit. Full payment triggers the no refund policy – you own the seat. See the KNOW refund policy on the next page. Payments: online must be by credit card (Mastercard, VISA, Discover or American Express) or account credit; at our office by cash, check, credit or debit card.

Drop-off registrations – can be turned in from February 27th – March 12th and will be processed according to the registration schedule – all registrations require a non-refundable deposit of 20%. Friends can drop-off fully completed and signed registration forms with proof of residency for each family.

How to Register Online We continue to encourage online registration at www.weymouth.ma.us/rec. It is the easiest and most convenient method for you, our customer, and us. If you would like further instruction on how to register online – please see our web-page – www.weymouth.ma.us/rec

If you have a Household Credit, you can apply it to your online order. Choose your programs, click on “Check Out,” then “Pay Online,” and an overview of your cart items will appear. Your account credit will be listed about half-way down this page, in orange. Choose “Apply Credit” and follow the prompts.

4 The latest - KNOW Refund, Cancellation and Transfer Policy: Please plan carefully before registering. Any time spent processing refunds is time we cannot commit to creating or running programs! Made a mistake? Call us right away and we will work it out. • Each registration requires a non-refundable deposit - roughly 20%. • If Weymouth Recreation must cancel a program, or you cancel prior to full payment, you will receive a full refund – minus your deposit. Do not pay in full until your summer schedule is set! • Refunds are not given for disciplinary dismissal*, failure to attend, absence, injury or sick days. • Refunds will be by Town of Weymouth check for payments by cash or check or by crediting the credit card you used during registration. Please allow four weeks for check processing. • Transfers & Cancellations - Once registered – you own the seat. There are no transfers or cancellations. Need to cancel? – The sooner you let us know the better your chances we can sell your seat to someone else. There are no guarantees that we will be able to sell your seat. If we can - we will credit your account. • Chargebacks - We will fight all chargebacks – we are happy to resolve legitimate concerns - double billed, overpaid or cancelled classes. This is not a way around the KNOW refund policy.

*Disciplinary Policy: Any participant who detracts from the enjoyment of another participant or the duties of the staff will be warned, once, and the incident will be reported to the parent that day. The participant will be removed if there is another incident that week. Two removals will result in a ban from all programs for the season. The office, equipment trailer, restrooms, and changing rooms are available on this site. Our Green Monster and Big Maroon shade structures will give participants necessary shelter from the sun throughout the day. This site houses all of our playground activities and field games, along with our newly expanded Kid’s Choice Zone. The Wessagusset School cafeteria and gymnasium is available to our program during inclement weather, and prolonged periods of uncomfortable high temperatures and humidity. The Wessagusset School Playing Fields will also be utilized for the following activities: soccer, flag football, volleyball, along with Frisbee, disc and “almost” golf. Lane Beach (In, Around, and On the Water!) The Wey-Fun bus now travels to Lane Beach during the morning and afternoon sessions, which offers all ages a chance to go swimming. It also allows morning swim lessons (all ages), along with kayaking (8-10, 10+) and sailing lessons (8+) . All participants will be accompanied and supervised by our staff. Pre- registration for these Lane Beach Wey-Fun “Plus” electives and a commitment to attend is required of participants. The afternoon bus to Lane Beach allows us the opportunity to play volleyball, and water polo, along with other beach and resort games. Additional activities will include the use of the paddle boats, scavenger and survivor contests, seaside-sketching, waterfront watercolors, and kite-making and flying. O’Sullivan Sports Complex A short walk across the street from Wessagusset School to O’Sullivan Playground allows us access to the athletic fields and courts for the multi-sport element of our program. Boasting three /softball diamonds and a side-by-side court/street hockey area makes this venue suitable for most team sports and our “Quick Start” tennis program. Wey-Fun: Kids Choice Zone “Plus” for 2014 Wey-Fun will continue to operate under two distinct & independent camps for ages (4-8) & (8+) Participants will still be grouped under the Rookies, Minors, Majors, & Pros categories for most activities, but may all join together in camp-wide special activities or events! During both the morning & afternoon sessions students from each age group will have an activity choice from one of three program headings: Multi-Sport, Aquatic, & the Kid’s Choice Zone. The Kid’s Choice Zone, situated on the school grounds, is a work in progress, in that it is designed to offer more activities that are geared for more individual & smaller group pursuits. The goal of our Staff is to get to know the kids & come up with new ideas & plan innovative activities that will meet the needs & interests of each participant. This area can run the whole gamut- as activities in the past have included special arts & crafts projects, table games, chess tournaments, kite making-flying, tie-dying, & Razor 360 Trike Competitions. This activity area is only limited by our imaginations. This site also hosts our daily special events which includes our Wednesday Wey-Fun Special on-site Event & Thursday cook-outs that start at noon. These special activities are for all Wey-fun ( including half-day ) participants & start at noon. A reminder to all morning & afternoon Wey-Fun kids that you are welcome to stay late / arrive early for these special offerings. As you can see The Kid’s Choice Zone is all about variety and has great potential to be extremely vibrant. The more choice we can offer in programming will ensure the kids are encouraged and engaged in a variety of pursuits. Wey-Fun Rain Day Policy The 4-8 age group (Rookies & Minors) will remain on site and utilize the gymnasium and cafetorium of the Wessagusset School. The 8-10+ age group (Majors & Pros) will be transported to the Immaculate Parish Center Parish Center (via bus) that houses a double gym, a fully operational kitchen, and three adjoining classrooms. The Rain Plan, when in effect, will be posted on our message board, on our web page(www.weymouth.ma.us) and you can call the Recreation Office at 781-682-6124. 16 Lane Beach Tides June July August Day Date High Low Date High Low Date High Low AM PM AM PM AM PM AM PM AM PM AM PM Fri. 1 3:25 3:50 9:36 10:00 Sat. 2 4:09 4:33 10:19 10:47 Sun. 1 2:14 2:52 8:35 8:47 3 4:56 5:19 11:05 11:39 Mon. 2 2:58 3:35 9:18 9:32 4 5:47 6:10 11:55 Tues. 3 3:43 4:20 10:01 10:19 1 2:30 3:04 8:47 9:02 5 6:43 7:04 12:33 12:49 Wed. 4 4:30 5:06 10:47 11:09 2 3:12 3:45 9:26 9:46 6 7:41 8:00 1:31 1:46 Thur. 5 5:19 5:54 11:35 3 3:56 4:28 10:10 10:33 7 8:40 8:58 2:29 2:44 Fri. 6 6:11 6:43 12:00 12:24 4 4:42 5:12 10:55 11:22 8 9:38 9:55 3:26 3:41 Sat. 7 7:04 7:32 12:54 1:14 5 5:31 5:59 11:41 9 10:34 10:51 4:22 4:37 Sun. 8 7:58 8:21 1:47 2:04 6 6:22 6:48 12:14 12:31 10 11:29 11:46 5:15 5:32 Mon. 9 8:51 9:10 2:40 2:55 7 7:17 7:39 1:08 1:23 11 12:21 6:07 6:26 Tues. 10 9:43 9:58 3:32 3:44 8 8:12 8:31 2:03 2:17 12 12:40 1:13 6:58 7:19 Wed. 11 10:34 10:46 4:22 4:34 9 9:08 9:25 2:58 3:11 13 1:34 2:05 7:48 8:12 Thur. 12 11:24 11:35 5:11 5:23 10 10:03 10:18 3:52 4:05 14 2:28 2:57 8:39 9:06 Fri. 13 12:14 6:00 6:13 11 10:57 11:11 4:45 4:58 15 3:22 3:49 9:30 10:02 Sat. 14 12:24 1:04 6:50 7:04 12 11:51 5:37 5:51 16 4:01 4:44 10:23 10:59 Sun. 15 1:15 1:56 7:40 7:56 13 12:04 12:43 6:29 6:44 17 5:16 5:41 11:18 11:59 Mon. 16 2:08 2:48 8:31 8:49 14 12:58 1:35 7:20 7:37 18 6:17 6:39 12:15 Tues. 17 3:02 3:43 9:23 9:45 15 1:51 2:28 8:11 8:32 19 7:19 7:39 1:01 1:14 Wed. 18 3:59 4:39 10:17 10:44 16 2:46 3:21 9:02 9:27 20 8:20 8:37 2:03 2:13 Thur. 19 4:58 5:36 11:13 11:44 17 3:42 4:16 9:55 10:24 21 9:17 9:31 3:01 3:08 Fri. 20 6:00 6:35 12:10 18 4:40 5:12 10:49 11:23 22 10:08 10:19 3:53 3:59 Sat. 21 7:02 7:33 12:47 1:09 19 5:39 6:09 11:45 23 10:53 11:03 4:37 4:44 Sun. 22 8:05 8:31 1:49 2:06 20 6:41 7:08 12:25 12:43 24 11:33 11:43 5:17 5:26 Mon. 23 9:06 9:25 2:50 3:02 21 7:44 8:06 1:27 1:41 25 12:10 5:55 6:07 Tues. 24 10:03 10:16 3:47 3:55 22 8:45 9:03 2:29 2:38 26 12:22 12:46 6:32 6:46 Wed. 25 10:55 11:03 4:38 4:44 23 9:43 9:55 3:26 3:32 27 1:00 1:22 7:08 7:25 Thur. 26 11:42 11:47 5:25 5:30 24 10:34 10:43 4:18 4:22 28 1:37 1:58 7:45 8:05 Fri. 27 12:25 6:08 6:14 25 11:20 11:26 5:04 5:08 29 2:16 2:35 8:23 8:46 Sat. 28 12:29 1:05 6:49 6:56 26 12:01 5:45 5:51 30 2:56 3:15 9:03 9:30 Sun. 29 1:09 1:45 7:28 7:37 27 12:07 12:40 6:24 6:31 31 3:40 3:58 9:46 10:17 Mon. 30 1:50 2:24 8:08 8:19 28 12:46 1:17 7:02 7:12 Tues. 29 1:25 1:54 7:39 7:52 Wed. 30 2:04 2:31 8:16 8:33 Thur. 31 2:44 3:10 8:55 9:15

Great Esker Park has been offering exploring nature programs, for children 4-8 years old, and outdoor recreation programs, for children 8 and older since the park was first bought by Weymouth in 1966. In 2014 we are committing to re-focusing our efforts toward delivering exceptional, hands- on natural experiences. The start of this focus will be to offer only those programs that have a history of success and scale back the rest. For this reason the Tenderfoot and Full-Day Discoverer programs have been cut from the program offerings. We hope our 3 year olds will continue to enjoy or try our Sprouts program behind the Tuft’s Library and our Full-day Discovers might weave together the Discoverer and Wey-Fun programs. The Nature Exploration classes will continue to use the park to discover the wondrous examples of the flora and fauna that inhabit the park as well as the various ecosystems eager to be explored. Great Esker Park Exploring Nature Programs include a lot of aquatic exploration. The staff will be trained to deal with events that can and will occur around still and moving water in order to keep your child safe. Please let the supervisor know, in writing, and check off the “beach” avoidance box on your picture ID application if you do not want your child in the water. The 2014 Great Esker Park Rover and Discoverer Programs will again be “rain or shine.” Particularly hard rain will drive the programs under shelters or into the building; otherwise they will continue to explore nature - please dress accordingly. Program schedules remain separated for 2014. Both the Rovers (14) and Discoverers (16) will start off as single groups – space is limited. The Outdoor Recreation Program can and will travel outside the park (by van) to get their fill of skill development and nature discovery. With-in the skill development for each particular class the staff will continue to encourage the relationship between program participants and nature! The Outdoor Recreation classes are split into Explorers and Adventurers and will be listed under each heading. Both Explorer and Adventurer classes may spend time exploring nature or developing “Esker” skills in addition to the program title (Canoeing, Fishing, Rock Climbing…) 2014 offers very good tides for most canoeing and kayaking classes on the Back River. The Adventurers will live up to their name and “venture” further and more often outside the park– but again, the tides do allow for a lot of fun in the park! Great Esker Park programs are very popular and promise to fill very fast this year. We have made every effort to coordinate class times with the bus schedule so your child can maximize their time at an “Esker” program as well as coordinate their moving between programs. All participants are welcome to wait for the bus and will be supervised while waiting. Great Esker has expanded their hosting of Wey-Fun to include the weeks of: June 16th – 20th, June 23rd – 27th, June 30th – July 3rd, August 18th – 22nd and August 25th – 29th. Check out how the two programs blend. See page 18 for Wey-Fun @ Esker details and pages 21 for Exploring Nature program details and pages 22 – 23 for Outdoor Recreation descriptions and schedules. Rovers and Discoverers programs will run these weeks and require only your Wey-Fun@Esker registration. Explorer and Adventurer require separate registration. We are happy with these program offerings but are always pleased to hear what you think – both good and bad. Supplies are included in the cost of the classes. Participants are encouraged to wear old clothes, bring hats, drinks, snacks, sunscreen & insect repellent. 20 GREAT ESKER PARK - EXPLORING NATURE Rovers & Discoverers are weekly from July 7th - August 15th See page 18 Wey-Fun @ Esker - a combination of Wey-Fun & Esker for the weeks of June 16th, June 23rd, June 30th, August 18th and August 25th. Let’s start with a bike fit for your body, a course set to challenge your abilities - beginner or “getting it” - and a staff eager to see you succeed. Summer Safety Tips from the Weymouth Health Dept. Minimize Sun Exposure: During the summer season, avoid relying on just sunscreen to protect your child from excess sun exposure. Remember, 80% of our lifetime exposure to the sun occurs during the childhood years.

You should start with a good sunscreen and then: √ Avoid midday sun when the sun’s rays are the strongest (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.). √ Cover up with lightweight clothing to protect the arms and legs. √ Wear a wide brimmed hat/visor and wear UV sunglasses to protect the eyes. √ Have lots of bottled water available. √ Some medications make a person more susceptible to sunburn, so extra precautions are needed to avoid prolonged sun exposure. A few such medications are Accutane, Retin A, tetracycline, Cipro, thiazides, griseofulvin, sulfa, & Lariam. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure about your own medications as there are many more that can cause sensitivity when combined with sun exposure.

Lyme Disease: From ticks - causes rash, fatigue, fever and flu-like symptoms √ Wear light colored clothing, use insect repellant with DEET, avoid grassy areas, perform daily tick checks on yourself and your children, and promptly remove any tick(s) (save the removed tick(s) for your doctor). If you think you have been bitten, call your doctor.

Barefoot Season is here! The Weymouth Health Department is offering Tetanus/ Diphtheria vaccinations to all Weymouth residents and town employees. Tetanus and Diphtheria are serious diseases. Tetanus is caused by a germ that enters the body through a cut or wound. It can lead to painful spasms of all the muscles and “locking” of the jaw. Diphtheria spreads when germs pass from an infected person to the nose and throat of others. Diphtheria causes a thick coating in the nose, throat and airway. It can cause trouble with breathing, heart failure, paralysis and death.. A booster dose is needed every 10 years. If it has been more than 10 years since your last tetanus shot… Call 781-340-5008 to make an appointment with the Public Health Nurse today! The Public Health nurses can also offer a dose of Tetanus/Diphtheria that contains vaccine against Pertussis (TDAP). This is a onetime dose, given in place of the vaccine that is Tetanus/Diphtheria (TD), mentioned above. It is important to get protection against Pertussis if you are going to be spending time with an infant younger than 12 months. The Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis is offered for a $5 donation. 27 adult programs i n t r o to t e nn i s Looking for an outdoors sports activity for which you need only one other person with whom to participate that provides great exercise, and you can play for a lifetime?
