InDesign CS4 PDF & PostScript Settings InDesign CS4

Exporting from InDesign CS/CS2/CS3/CS4

We strongly recommend following the steps attached to print a fi le from a PC and not exporting a fi le from InDesign as the following problems may occur.

1. Exported PDFs can cause problems when imposed and uploaded to the Espresso catalog. 2. Transparencies are not fl attened and are not embedded with this process and may produce unwanted outcomes. 3. There is no control over the page width in an exported PDF fi le.

How to Print a Postscript fi le from a PC An easy way is to use the virtual postscript printer instalator that you can fi nd on the Adobe Web Site (www.adobe.com). Search for Adobe Universal PostScript Windows Driver Installer 1.0.6 - English. We can email you the fi le as well (winsteng.exe), or see attached instructions with InDesign Postcript settings.

Create an Acrobat Distiller 4.0 job option named: espresso_settings.joboptions This fi le goes in -->Distiller-->Settings, this is all the settings you will need to create your PDF fi les. First, you will create .ps fi les (save as fi le, “postscript instructions”) then you will drag your fi les in the Acrobat Distiller window.

Please use the following guidelines: • Avoid complicated fi le names - Use simple fi les names (bkblks_ISBN.pdf, cover_ISBN please save with the ISBN #). • Don’t export press-ready pdf fi les from InDesign. • Your fi les must have the same page sizes. • Embed ALL fonts, don’t subset. • Flatten ALL layers. • All colors must be CMYK and any unused colors must be deleted. • When using artifi cials (outline, bold, italics), please convert to outlines. • Finally, avoid creating spreads, please do single . • Cover fi le must be on an 11x17 sheet centered (back cover, spine, front cover).

Automatic prefl ight checkup In Adobe Acrobat, you can proceed with a fi nal checkup using « Prefl ight ».

Here’s how: First, select « Prefl ight » from the Advance tab, then choose options, import the espresso profi le. Execute it. At this , the list will grow with things you must have a special look at. It’s that easy!

1 InDesign CS4

Adobe® InDesign® is capable of directly to a PDF file. However, we do not consider this to be a reliable PDF for print production. In order to generate a reliable PDF from InDesign® a PostScript® file must be created from InDesign® and then distilled to PDF using Adobe® Acrobat® Distiller. This will describe the step-by-step instructions for creating a PostScript® file from InDesign®.

Only limited editing can be performed on the final PDF files in the case of a correction or problem; therefore, customers will generally be required to send a new PDF for any corrections.

These guidelines must be closely followed in order to successfully create PostScript® files from InDesign®:

• Include ISBN# and if its bkblks ( blocks) or cover in the name of the PostScript® file for identification. • Create your document at the actual trim size and add bleeds of 0.5” on all sides beyond the edge of trim for cover files only. • Images must be created to SWOP (Specifications for Web Offset Publications) standards.

The Espresso PPD (postscript print driver) must be placed in the system folder shown below before continuing to the Postscript® instructions. See the following instructions for placement of the Espresso PPD.
