Understanding Smallholder Finance and Marketing Issues in Zambia

AGRICULTURE is a big deal in Zambia. National government policies acknowledge the sector as an engine for growth and driver to poverty reduction. For a long time, the sector share of employment has fl oated between 48 – 52%. Yet the sector’s share in total output (Gross Domestic Product) revolved between 10 and 13% since 1990. The sector has faced challenges such as those related to fi nance and marketing, more especially among small-scale farmers.

In this series, I will concentrate on realities and challenges of agriculture fi nance and marketing among small-scale farmers in Zambia. I will delve into what should be done by state and non-state actors to strengthen support in credit and marketing for small- scale farmers in Zambia in order to drive an agenda for national growth and poverty reduction.

The series is timely given recent eff orts by the Centre for Trade Policy and Development to launch two studies around Agriculture Finance and Marketing in Zambia later in the month. The next two series of articles, I will aim to highlight some of these elements and lessons learnt thus far.
