Perkara paling menarik yang berlaku dalam dekad 90-an ialah percubaan memperkembang penggunaan teori dan pendekatan seperti estetika, intertek, semiotik dan kelahiran teori tempatan seperti takmilah, teksdealisme, dan pengkaedahan Melayu telah mula memperlihatkan bibit bibit perkembangannya dalam sastera Melayu dekad 90-an. v Abstract of thesis presented to the Senate of Universiti Putra Malaysia in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Literature Arts DEVELOPMENT OF THEORY AND APPROACHES CRITIQUES OF MALAYLITERATURE OF THE 80s TO THE 90s DeCADES By SHOKERI BIN HASSAN November 2003 Chairman: Mohd. Kasim Bin Ismail Faculty: Modern Languages And Communication This study is a survey of critiques or essays on critical appreciation of Malay literary works throughout the 80s and 90s decades. The main objective of this study was to identify the quantity, quality, genre, critics and approaches used throughout the two decades. All critic selected were analysed based on the quantitative and qualitative methods. The qualitative analysiS was carried out based on three aspects, namely, use of genres, approaches and critics involved during both decades. The findings of the study revealed that the novel genre was the most popular throughout both decades, followed by equally popular poetry and short stories; the least popular was the drama genre while formalistic approaches dominated critical appreciation throughout both decades. VI In spite of that, in terms of quality, it was found that only 9% of the critiques written within both decades were considered to have met the characteristics, tasks and functions of critical appreciation. The critiques were written by renowned master critics such as Umar Junus, Rahman Shaari, Ahmad Kamal Abdullah, Hashim Awang, Mana Sikana and Ramli Isin during the 80s decade while the critics of the 90s decade, also celebrated in their own rights, consisted of Othman Puteh, Rahman Shaari, Rosnah Baharuddin, Ramli Isin, Ungku Maimunah Mohd Tahir, Sohaimi Abdul Aziz and Lutfi Abas. The most interesting significance of the 90s decade was the attempt to develop the usage of theories and approaches such as esthetics, inter texts, and semiotics which were initially propagated by local scholars, in the midst of their anxiety over theoretical inadequacy and western approaches, in overcoming problems faced by Malay literature due to differences of cultural values. Jurnal Usuluddin (Januari – Jun 2013) 37:117-150 Unsur-unsur Retorik dalam Puisi Melayu Al-Amin Karya A. Samad Said Rahmah Ahmad H. Osman1 Mohd Shahrizal Nasir2 Abstrak Makalah menganalisis sebuah karya sastera Islam iaitu puisi Al-Amin oleh A. Samad Said yang memaparkan kisah hidup Nabi Muhammad SAW. This clash also created a new sense of place and function for the writer and his individual consciousness. From then on he/she sought to describe new scenarios and express his/her own perspectives and opinions with more confidence and conviction. Traditional literary formulae were slowly replaced with new and original lines and metaphors, while the verse and the narrative forms were loosened to allow the writer’s personality to be expressed.

It also provides a bibliographic description and quantitative analysis of Malaysian award winning children and young adults’ literature by describing frequency of book awards and writing competition, prizes and organisations involved, genres, winning authors and categories by children and young adults. This study uses a mixed approach of historical research and bibliographic study. Historical method is used to study the contents of sources, both primary and secondary such as journal articles from Dewan Sastera, Dewan Siswa, books, newspaper reports and printed programmes in order to put into chronology the events that lead up to the organisation and development of children and young adults’ literary prizes in Malaysia. Subsequently, descriptive statistics is used to describe the frequency of awards, genres, organisations involved, categories, years of awards, prizes value and the winning authors and their works. In the early years, writing competitions were mostly organised by DBP, a government agency; in this era, the private sector had overtaken the government in organising and sponsoring literary prizes.

The University of Hull TELEKOM MALAYSIA: PRIVATISATION AND STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT being a Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in The University of Hull by Zainal Abdul Samad (MBA, University of Dubuque) July 1996 I Abstract This thesis is concerned with an evaluation of decisions and practices of the government of Malaysia and top management of Telekom Malaysia (TM) in the preparation for and after privatisation of the entity. The thesis shows that in reality the Malaysian government has pursued policies contrary to its stated privatisation goals by denying independent decision making in TM and hence the evolution of strategic management practices in the privatised entity. Instead of an independent decision-making body, the top management of TM are little more than acquiescent political and civil service appointees, who are obliged to accept passively directives from the government which clearly will affect the ability to achieve the stated corporate goals of Telecommunications Vision 2005 - to put in place a first class network and organisation which is capable of providing services on a par with those existing in the advanced countries by the year 2005. On the basis of this study, the researcher has arrived at several propositions. The most important contribution of the thesis is that it presents to both the government and top management of TM, recommendations to adopt an appropriate strategic management and long-term approach to achieve the stated goals based on long-term growth, efficiency and higher bumiputra equity, that supports the realisation of TM's ambitious goal of Telecommunications Vision 2005. • The Relation Between Creativity, Identity and Political Expression in the Writings of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Shahnon Ahmad
MALAY LITERATURE VOLUME 27 NUMBER 2 2014 THE RELATION BETWEEN CREATIVITY, IDENTITY AND POLITICAL EXPRESSION IN THE WRITINGS OF GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ AND SHAHNON AHMAD Mohd Faizal Musa [email protected] Institute of the Malay World and Civilization (ATMA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 Bangi, Selangor Darul Ehsan, MALAYSIA. Tel.: Tel.:+ 603-89213494. Abstract The presence of political elements within literary works is often seen as something provocative. Through a framework proposed by C. R. Rogers in his essay entitled “Towards a Theory of Creativity”, this article will demonstrate the close link between an author, his creativity and the political theme in the creation of his literary works. This framework enables the author’s personal attributes and personality to be linked to the political elements featured in his works. The creativity of a political novelist is found to be dependent on his surroundings, experience and political awareness. In relation to this, two authors of political novels are highlighted in this research. They are Shahnon Ahmad (Malaysia) who produced Tunggul-Tunggul Gerigis and Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Latin America) famed for his work One Hundred Years of Solitude. It is discovered through this research that the two political novelists did not write in a vacuum. The presence of political subjects specifically mentioned in their works clearly originates from their real-life surroundings which have consolidated into their identity, personality and authorship as political writers. In other words, politics is the authors’ flesh and blood and 284 MOHD FAIZAL MUSA this allows political subjects to be crafted and expressed in their creative works. Hence an author without a varied background in politics will never be able to create or produce effective political works or novels.

  • 6 Sibling Tension and Negotiation Malay(Sian) Writer-Political
6 Sibling tension and negotiation Malay(sian) writer-political activists’ links and orientation to Indonesia Budiawan We might see the cultural traffic between Indonesia and abroad in 1950-1965 as an imbalanced flow of influences, in which Indonesia was in the position of being influenced rather than the reverse. While Indonesian cultural workers presented their works abroad, searched for inspiration from and extended their references to various sites of ‘world’ cultures, as other contributors to this vol- ume discuss, subsequently they processed imported ideas into ‘local’ expressions, to fit the aspiration for so-called national iden- tity.1 This was common in recently decolonized nations, since the ‘nation building project’ was at the initial stage. The case of Indonesia–Malaya cultural traffic, particularly in literature, however, tends to show the opposite direction. Rather than being the importer, Indonesia was the exporter of literary works and ideas to Malaya without, to a great extent, necessarily being aware of it, for it was the latter that took initiatives to search for inspiration from the former. In short, Indonesia became the ‘Mecca’ for the writers of Malaya,2 especially the Malay writers, both in the given period and even earlier.3 1 Yet, as the idea of ‘national identity’ was (and is) contested, the creative processes of adapt- ing to ‘local’ expressions tended to run in hot and even endless debates. Keith Foulcher’s chapter in this volume is the study of such a cultural debate in post-independence Indonesia. 2 Until the breakdown of the Malaysian Federation in 1965, after which Malaysia and Singa- pore were separated, the term ‘Malaya’ referred to the whole British colonies of the peninsula including the island of Singapore.

Being Indonesian 1950-1965 Heirs to world culture Heirs to world culture Heirs to world culture Being Indonesian 1950-1965 This volume brings together new scholarship by Indonesian and non-Indonesian scholars on Indonesia’s cultural history from 1950-1965. During the new nation’s first decade and a half, Indonesia’s links with the world and its sense of nationhood were vigorously negotiated on the cultural front. Indonesia used cultural networks of the time, including those of the Cold War, to announce itself on the world stage. International links, post-colonial aspirations and nationalistic fervour interacted to produce a thriving cultural and intellectual life at home. Essays discuss the exchange of artists, intellectuals, writing and ideas between Indonesia and various countries; the development of cultural networks; and ways these networks interacted with and influenced cultural expression and discourse in Indonesia.
